Lego Beowulf and the Web of Hands and Hearts, for the Danish national museum ...Michael Edson
This talk was delivered at the awards ceremony for the 2012 Bikuben Foundation Danish Museum Prize in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Ideas about what museums are, who they serve, and the role they play in society are changing with dramatic speed, driven largely by social media and the participatory culture of global networks.
Denmark supports world-class museums, with remarkable collections, expert staff, and beautiful architecture. But how can museum leaders balance the traditional concepts of organizational mission and outcomes with the disruptive possibilities being demonstrated by those who love and use museums in new ways?

Digital Culture and the Shaking Hand of ChangeMichael Edson
The presentation shows how to create and use a "problem space" to organize complex challenges. The central metaphor for the talk is the "civic handshake" — a process by which different parts of society cooperate through the informal exchange of information and the sharing of responsibilities.
A presentation for Open Source Bridge that summarizes the 6 weeks of research and development that I just wrapped up while at the Banff Centre for a residency on Arts and Sciences for Saul and Charles.

We live in dense urban landscapes that have crisis at many different scales. A crisis may be a large event such as a tsunami, an earthquake, a terrorist attack or other large scale disaster. A crisis may be something smaller such as a house fire, or a pileup on the freeway, a gas leak or a road out. A crisis may be something relatively minor, a crisis only to one person, such as being locked out of ones car, or trying to find a lost pet, or needing help sharing babysitting duties.
For the purpose of this talk I am interested in the far end of the long tail of crisis response – and what open source technology we can strap together to build tactical systems for helping tackle such crisis. I have been developing an approach using off the shelf tools that can help resolve local crisis – the smaller more personal crisis that interrupts peoples lives.
If we watch messages over a city, and provide analytic views for interested parties, then a role for “angels” to participate emerges. Interested individuals can act in a matchmaking capacity to connect complementary interests together. We can collaboratively up-score or down-score public comments aggregated from a variety of geo local sources. We can filter away noise so that responders can more easily decide what to respond to. In sum we can make it possible for people on the ground, in the area, to volunteer to help out by providing clarity.
I consider these class of services to be a kind of ubiquitous angel. They are not something that you have to even know exist until they help you.
The tools that we can leverage today to build such services are worth knowing – having many applications. In particular solr ( an enterprise search engine ) and carrot2 ( a topic clustering engine ) can play a powerful role in helping filter noise. Other related projects in particular Ushahidi and Swift have a high degree of overlap and those technologies will be discussed as well.
Beyond today there’s a role for such technology to help us deal with new kinds of crisis in the future. Over the next decades we may be facing economic and environmental concerns that are granular, evenly distributed and problematic in resolution. These kinds of tools and approaches may be useful there as well.

We live in unprecedented times... technology is disrupting learning and work as we know it. Machines are taking over more and more jobs and we need to be preparing this generation for a very uncertain unpredictable rapidly changing world. Education needs to shift to a world of abundant knowledge, leveraged through networks, and knowledge engines. CIO's need to be futurists and guides for their organizations to lead them forward into the future.

Twitter, Instagram and Micro-Narratives: The benefits of sharing the creative...Mark McGuire

Abstract
As Rainie and Wellman explain in Networked (2012) the rise of the Internet, social networks and mobile technologies have resulted in media experiences that are personal, multiuser, multitasking and multithreaded. They refer to this new social operating system as “networked individualism”. In Spreadable Media (2013), Jenkins et al. argue that our networked culture is characterized by instantaneous, informal communication through multiple channels in which the audience participates in the creation of value and meaning, and in the circulation of media and messages. In this paper, I use the concepts of networked individualism and spreadable media in an examination of projects that use Twitter and Instagram to create and share micro-narratives.
In 140 Illustrated Haikus, an iPhone and Instagram were used to document a month-long trip to three countries in late 2012. The resulting photos and short texts were published simultaneously via Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, email and Tumblr (http://marksjourney.tumblr.com/). In addition to the limitations imposed by time and technology, captions for the photos were written on the spot in the form of a haiku. These constraints were found to help, rather than hinder, the creative process.
Austin Kleon is a writer and artist who creates “Newspaper Blackout Poetry” by selecting a newspaper, choosing a few key words, and blacking out the rest with a marker. He shares the results with more than 28,000 followers on Twitter (@austinkleon), many of whom tweet their own blackout poems. Kleon also posts his poems to a website (http://newspaperblackout.com/), where others are encouraged to contribute their own efforts. An advocate of sharing work-in-progress, Kleon’s approach exemplifies the process-based, conversational nature of networked creative practice.
Desert Friends, the “World’s First Instagram TV Show” is about three individuals who are transported to a distant galaxy and try to find their way back to Palm Springs (http://instagram.com/desertfriends). The filmmakers uploaded the first installment on 23 June 2013, and have continued to publish about four 15-second “shows” each week. Shot in black and white using the Instagram App on an iPhone, the programs emulate the style of low budget science fiction movies of the 1950s and 1960s. By episode number 63, the Desert Friends Instagram stream had attracted over 25,000 followers. This production demonstrates that filmmakers can create their own “TV show” with their own gear, and broadcast it over channels that anyone can use.
These case studies show that, by regularly sharing ideas and processes as well as outcomes online, individuals become part of a creative ecology that enables visibility, mutual support, collaboration, and better work.

Developers: Why Care About the User? (September 2021)Andrew Malek
As developers, we deal with technologies, frameworks, and data, making it very easy to forget that what we create is meant for real people to use.
While designers and UI specialists should handle most decisions about how a product or service looks and feels, we should all be on the same page to make better solutions. Whether we are building an interface for a desktop website, mobile application, or chatbot, what are some basic design concepts that we as developers can pick up, allowing us to be on the same page with designers and product owners during product meetings and discussions?
