The more food available, the more organisms survive and the higher the total biomass. But how can we measure the amount of food deposition? Using micro-electrodes, mounted on sophisticated landers, biogeochemists measure high-resolution profiles of oxygen concentration as a function of sediment depth. Fitting these oxygen profiles with a model estimates oxygen fluxes, from which organic matter deposition rates are calculated.
