10x Engineer – A Class
Apart
I have the privilege of
working with 10x engineers.
This is what makes them a
class apart.
A 10x engineer
always gets shit
done. No matter
what, they will figure
out a way to solve
the problem. If you
can trust someone in
your team to always
deliver, they are
probably a 10x
engineer.

Kevin, our head of
engineering refers to
engineers that don't
think product as "code
monkeys". Engineers are
not code monkeys,
engineers build great
products period. 10x
engineers understand
that very well and deeply
think product.

Of all the skills I look
for in an engineer,
collaboration is
probably the most
important one. Great
collaboration fosters a
work atmosphere that
you want to go to every
day. Jeff Bezos once
said that he does not
tolerate brilliant jerks.
Neither should you.

A 10x engineer is
completely aware of
the people he needs
to loop in a
conversation. He
ensures that there is
a shared
understanding of
the goals, vision,
technology within
the whole team.

A 10x engineer up levels the whole team. They
are constantly on a look to make things better,
most of the times by 10x. Great engineers
mentor other engineers and ensure that they
are successful as well.

10x engineers constantly discover and pursue
new ideas and areas of interest. One of the
best advices I ever received is to always keep
learning. Here is a LinkedIn post on this -

The best products and technologies are the
ones that are simple, have less moving parts.
Great engineers build simple products and
experiences. They choose technologies,
whenever applicable that are open source.
And when they build, they stick to keeping it
simple.
10x engineers care deeply about the product
and members, that they act as a owner. They
are super passionate about the area they are
focussed on, will do anything to ensure that it
is successful.

Super decisive about priorities. 10x engineers
don't spread themselves thin. They will get shit
done by choosing to do few things and doing it
right.

Lastly, 10x engineers build to last. They build
products and technologies that last an internet
lifetime. Great engineers understand the
trends, they anticipate the future needs and
build for it.
