Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)Julian Hyde
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

Software testing is a vital process in the development lifecycle of any
software product. It evaluates and verifies that a software program or
application does what it should. Developers can run tests for quality
assurance, verification and validation, or reliability estimation. In simpler
terms, software testing checks a computer system or program to decide
whether it meets requirements and produces results. As such, you can think of
software testing as the software industry's equivalent of proofreading.
Why Is Software Testing Important?
Software testing is crucial for multiple reasons, and some of the most
significant include the following:
Assurance of Quality
Quality is the value proposition that every software product offers. Testing
ensures that this value is realized. By identifying defects or bugs before the
software is released, testing helps maintain the quality standards of the
software product.
User Satisfaction
3. The end goal of any product is to satisfy the users' needs. Testing ensures
that the user experience is consistent and that the software is intuitive, easy
to use, and error-free.
Security
This is one of the most sensitive and vulnerable parts of software testing.
Testing helps ensure that the software is secure and that user data is
protected from threats and breaches.
Product Reliability
Software needs to be reliable. Testing assesses the software's reliability and
ensures it operates as expected in all scenarios, including edge cases and
under stress.
Cost Efficiency
Identifying bugs early in the development process reduces the cost of fixing
them. As defects become more embedded into the system, they become
more expensive.
Compliance
Testing is essential to ensure that software complies with industry and
regulatory standards. Non-compliance will result in legal issues and fines.
Performance Verification
4. Software testing ensures that the performance of the software is up to the
mark and that it can handle the load without lagging or crashing.
Types of Software Testing
Software testing has two areas: manual testing and automated testing.
Manual Testing
Manual testing is performed by humans carefully executing the test steps. It is
effective in finding usability issues and understanding the user's perspective.
Automated Testing
Automated testing uses scripts and software tools to perform tests
repeatedly. This type of testing is efficient for regression testing and can
handle complex and repetitive tasks.
Delving deeper into the types of software testing, we can categorize them
based on various aspects, such as the test's purpose, the level of automation,
and the stage of the software development process. Here's a more detailed
look at different types of software testing:
Functional Testing
This testing deals with the functional requirements of a system; it answers the
question, "Can the user do this?" or "Does this particular feature work?" It
includes:
5. ● Unit Testing: Individual units or components of software are tested.
Typically done by developers.
● Integration Testing: Tests the interfaces between components or
systems.
● System Testing: Developers test the complete and integrated
software to verify that it meets the specified requirements.
● Sanity Testing: A quick, nonsystematic test to check whether a
particular function works after minor changes.
● Smoke Testing: Also known as "build verification testing," it's a rapid
check to see if the software is severely flawed and warrants further
examination.
● User Acceptance Testing (UAT): Conducted to ensure the software
handles tasks in real-world scenarios according to specifications.
● Regression Testing: Performed after changes to the software to
ensure existing features still work as before.
● Beta/Alpha Testing: Real users test the software in a real
environment.
Non-functional Testing
These tests are designed to check the non-functional aspects of the software.
● Performance Testing: Checks if the system performs well under a
particular workload. This can be further divided into:
● Load Testing: To check the system behavior under normal and peak
conditions.
6. ● Stress Testing: To check the system's limits and how it performs
under extreme conditions.
● Volume Testing: Testing with a certain amount of data to check the
system's volume handling capacity.
● Scalability Testing: Determines if the software is effectively scalable.
● Usability Testing: It involves testing the software for
user-friendliness.

possible intrusions.
● Compatibility Testing: Ensures the software works on different
devices, operating systems, network environments, etc.
● Compliance Testing: Verifies that the software adheres to standards
and regulations.
● Reliability Testing: Determines if the software can perform a
failure-free operation for a specific period.
● Recovery Testing: Checks how well the system can recover from
crashes, hardware failures, and other issues.
Maintenance Testing
Once the software is in production, maintenance testing is performed, which
includes:
● Correction Testing: Done after a defect has been fixed.
● Adaptive Testing: To ensure the software works in a new
environment.
7. ● Perfective Testing: When new features are added to the software.
● Preventive Testing: Aimed at identifying potential areas of failure.
Other Testing Types
Additionally, there are more specialized types of testing that might be
applicable depending on the project requirements:
● Exploratory Testing: Testers explore the software without predefined
test cases to identify defects not covered by traditional testing.
● A/B Testing: Comparing two software versions to see which one
performs better.
● Static Testing: The analysis of the software's code and
documentation before the program is run.
● Dynamic Testing: Testing the software by executing code.
● Installation Testing: Checking if the software installs correctly.
● Mutation Testing: Making small changes to the code and retesting to
see if the tests catch the changes.
In the grand scheme of the software development lifecycle, these types of
tests are often interwoven and sometimes happen in parallel. A
comprehensive testing strategy will typically involve a blend of these methods
to ensure a well-rounded examination of the software's functionality,
performance, and user experience. The ultimate goal is to identify as many
issues as possible before releasing the software to the public, minimizing the
risk of failure or user dissatisfaction.
