Sustainable development
“Development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.”
— from the World Commission on
Environment and Development’s
(the Brundtland Commission) report Our Common Future
(Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1987)
2
Key aspects for sustainable development
✔Inter-generational equity: different generation
✔Intra-generational equity: minimise gaps within and
between countries
Measures for sustainable development:
✔Use appropriate technology
✔Reduce, reuse and recycle approach
✔Prompting environmental education and awareness
✔Resource utilisation as per carrying capacity
3
Major Challenges
• Human Population
• Indiscriminate use of forest areas for fuel, power generation
and irrigation
• Food insecurity
• Falling water table
• Environmental pollution
• Poverty
• Lasting and secure livelihood to all
• Soil degradation
• Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides use
4
Indian Context:
Urban problem related to energy:
✔ Increase in human population
✔Increase in urban growth
✔Higher standard of lifestyle
✔Industrial sprawl
✔Energy dependent technologies to
prevent environment pollution
5
Indian context: Water conservation
✔ Water loss due to run-off
✔ No catchment areas
✔Increased evaporation rate
✔Irrigational activities
✔ Decreasing run-off losses
✔ Reducing evaporation loss
✔ Storing water in soil
✔ Reduce irrigation loss
✔ Re-use of water
✔ Preventing wastage of water
6
Rainwater harvesting
Technique of increasing the recharge of groundwater by
capturing and storing rainwater
Objective:
• to reduce run-off
• Avoid flooding of roads
• Meet increasing demands of water
• Raise water table by recharging ground water
• Reduce water contamination
• Supplement groundwater supplies during lean season
• Improve groundwater quality
7
Rainwater Harvesting Methods
• Storing rainwater in tanks, reservoirs
• Constructing pits, dug-wells, lagoons, trench, check
dams
• Recharging groundwater
• Construction of percolation tanks
• Construction of groundwater dams
8
Watershed Management: A land area from which water
drains under gravity to a common drainage channel
Advantages
✔Food production
✔Water supply for irrigation
✔Power generation
✔Transportation
✔Promotes vegetation
✔Land use activities
✔Water storage
9
Resettlement and Rehabilitation issues
• Displacement problems due to dams
• Displacement due to mining
• Displacement due to creation of Protected Areas
10
Rising concern:
• Rampant burning of fuelwood and biomass
• Lack of organized garbage and waste removal services
• Lack of sewage treatment operations
• Lack of flood control and monsoon water drainage system
• Diversion of consumer waste into rivers
• Cremation practices near major rivers
• Use of highly polluting old public transport
• High emissions from factories and industrial plants
11
Indian Constitution and Environment
• India amended its Environment in 1976
• Article 48 (A) of part IV: the State shall endeavor to
protect and improve the environment and to safeguard
the forests and the wildlife of the country.
• Article 51 A (g) imposed additional environmental
mandates on the Indian state.
12
Issues addressed by United Nations
Environmental Programme (UNEP)
• Protection of the atmosphere
• Ozone depletion
• Climate changes (Global warming/Greenhouse effect)
• Protection of freshwater quality
• Protection of oceans and coastal areas
• Human ‘s overpopulation
13
• Protection of land resources
• Deforestation and desertification problems
• Conservation of biological diversity
• Management of biotechnology, hazardous wastes
and toxic chemicals
• Protection of human health and quality of life.
• Industrial and household wastes.
14
It contains within it two key concepts:
• The concept of needs, in particular the essential needs
of the world's poor, to which overriding priority
should be given; and
• The idea of limitations imposed by the state of
technology and social organization on the
environment's ability to meet present and future
needs."
15
Target Areas:
• Improving energy efficiency
• Saving forests
• Safeguarding biodiversity
• Adopting water resources management
• Managing coastal zones and ocean fisheries
• Arresting pollution
• Planning cities better
• Accomplishing a second green revolution
• Stabilizing world population
• Stopping environmentally destructive subsidies
16
Common examples of Sustainable
Development practices are:
• Solar and wind energy. Energy from these
resources is limitless, meaning we have the ability to
eliminate dependence on non-renewable power
sources by harnessing power from renewable
resources.
17
• Sustainable construction. Homes, offices and other
structures that incorporate recycled and renewable
resources will be more energy efficient and stand the
test of time.
18
• Crop rotation. Many farmers and gardeners are
using this method as a chemical free way to reduce
diseases in the soil and increase growth potential of
their crops.
19
• Water fixtures. Water conservation is critical to
sustainable development, and more and more
products are available that use less water in the home,
such as showers, toilets, dishwashers and laundry
systems.
