The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

- 비주얼 스튜디오는 일반적으로 윈도우 응용프로그램을 만드는데 있어서 민감한 부분 중 하나인 파일 관리를 도울 수 있도록 프로젝트 워크스페이스와 프로젝트 워크스페이스 윈도우를 제공해줍니다 . 프로젝트 워크스페이스는 프로젝트를 구성한 모든 파일을 조정하는데 사용된 모든 정보를 저장합니다 . 워크스페이스에 여러 프로젝트를 넣을 경우 하나의 명령어만으로도 워크스페이스에 있는 모든 프로젝트들의 실행 파일을 만들 수 있는 장점도 있습니다 . 프로젝트 워크스페이스 윈도우에는 파일뷰 , 클래스뷰 , 리소스뷰 3 가지가 있는데 파일뷰는 프로젝트에 있는 파일들을 계층구조로 보여줍니다 . 파일뷰는 프로젝트내의 파일을 계층구조로 관리할 수 있다는 점 외에도 속성정보를 통하여 파일이 어떠한 파일에 의존성이 있는지 등을 볼 수 있습니다 . 클래스뷰는 파일뷰처럼 프로젝트내에 존재하는 클래스들을 계층구조로 보여줍니다 . 클래스뷰를 통해 베이스 클래스나 유도클래스로의 쉬운 접근이 가능합니다 . 또한 함수추가나 변수추가를 할 수 있습니다 . 리소스뷰는 프로젝트 내에 사용된 리소스들을 보여줍니다 . 리소스들의 종류로는 단축키 , 대화상자 , 아이콘 , 메뉴 등이 있습니다 . 프로젝트의 리소스 관련된 정보는 리소스 스크립트에 저장됩니다 . 리소스들은 리소스 ID 라고 부르는 숫자들의 의해 구분됩니다 .
- 비주얼 스튜디오는 프로젝트 환경설정을 지원해줍니다 . 환경설정을 각각 다르게 정의하여 , 참조할 DLL( 동적라이브러리 ), Header, LINK, 컴파일러 등을 선택할 수 있습니다 . 위 그림은 하나의 코드로 다른 환경설정을 하여 , 다르게 빌드할 수 있다는 것을 의미합니다 .
- 비주얼 C++ 의 컴파일러는 개발자가 하나의 명령어나 마우스 클릭만으로 프로젝트를 빌드 할 수 있도록 지원해줍니다 . 또한 컴파일시 에러가 발생할 경우 , Output 윈도우에 에러가 발생한 라인과 에러메시지를 보여줍니다 . F4 를 누르면 에러가 발생한 지점으로 이동하여 줍니다 .
- MFC 를 사용하는 방법에는 여러가지가 있는데 , 첫번째 방법은 MFC 를 응용프로그램이나 DLL 로 정적으로 링크해서 실행 파일 내에 넣는 것이다 . 이 기능을 사용하면 사용할 MFC 기능의 양에 따라 파일 크기가 아주 커질 수 있지만 따로 다른 것들을 추가적으로 설치할 필요가 없어진다 . 두번째 방법은 MFC 가 DLL 로 만들어 지도록 하는 것이다 . DLL 과 관련한 자세한 내용은 11 장에서 다룬다고 합니다 .
