CULTURE
Session one
‘what is culture?’
Adrian L Hawkes
What is Culture?
Where does it come from?
What makes it?
It is the effect of family and pressures by
Politics Religion
Education
Art Media
Economics
?
What are the easy things to spot that
demonstrate differences in culture?
!
Differences in Cultures
that are obvious
Things like:-
Food GREETINGS
DRESS
LANGUAGE
The four pillars of
culture
Business / economics
Education / family
Media / entertainment / advertising
Politics / government / religion
Are the four pillars on which all culture rests
Culture is not static
It is constantly changing though sometime we
are not aware of that fact
It is becoming almost generic, and we are, on
a world wide basis subject to world pressure
on local culture ‘ the global village effect’
In the micro you only have to go to your
neighbours to experience cultural change
The most powerful
global influencer of
culture
Is probably Film ‘movies’
And they as we know predominantly
come from Hollywood in the West
Or from Bolliwood in the East
We all watch American movies…
We are all culturally affected…
Why this course is
important!
We need to understand who we are
We need to understand why we are
We need a point of reference in any attempt
to help others
We live in an increasing global world and to
understand other cultures particularly in our
cross cultural exchanges our reference points
on cultural understanding become more and
more important
