Inspiration from PM Narendra Modi on yearly Performance Appraisal
It was 5 March 2017 evening when PM Modi had put all energy during final campaign in UP election at his
constituency, Varanasi. Opposition, media and many so called great Indian liberals were amusing his move and
criticizing him but overlooking all of them, PM Modi was on his mission as aware about the importance of this
election in his career as PMof India.
In March month,mostof the companyemployees inIndiaare busyinfinalizing the goal sheet and put full energy to
arrange the data, remember his last one-year achievement, justification where could not perform and show off
where overperformedsincethisisthe matterof strengthening of theircareerhence employeesgive their best in his
work plan and this goal sheet plays a vital role for all level of employee even Sr. Management, CEO etc.
I was justseeingthe similaritiesinboththe facts and if we consider PMModi as an employee, goal sheet is election
manifesto,Electionasappraisal & nation as an organization. PMModi was absolutely doing the same thing what an
employee of company does just before appraisal.
Whenwe have the resultsof state electionsnow,thisis not difficult to evaluate PMModi’s performance over other
party politicians.There are variousaspectsof thiswinwhere anyemployeecanlearnfromPMModi whatwas special
in his efforts before appearing in yearly appraisal i.e. elections.
Initiativeswhichare Game Changer:Every employee take initiatives to improve his performance but only those get
benefittedwhoare responsibleforgame changer where entire organizationisbenefittedmost.Theseinitiatives may
be fewinnumbersbuttheirimpactis sopowerful thatemployee easilybecome the blue eyeforthe organization and
fewof hisfailuresare easilysidelined or ignored. Demonetization, dhan jan yojna or even surgical strikes are those
initiativesof PMModi whichdirectlyputaninfluence onpeople andvote inhisfavour.Iwouldsayall these initiatives
are proved as game changer for him and heavy win in elections is the evidence
Powerful Connect& team motivation:Arrogance,ignorance,Dominance,egoatholdingthe higher positions etc are
those injudicioustraitswhichmakesabarrierbetweenemployee andhisco-workers,thisleadsthe non-performance
of the employee due to poor connect from others. May be person at higher position gets some support due to his
fearbut not thismuchwhichis sufficienttoachieve somethingextra. Contrary to these traits if we see PMModi, his
powerful connectwith people, party workers etc made him alluring to mass. One of the example he set during the
Varanasi campaignwhenhe visited to his few unsatisfied party workers and convinced him with harmony. I am not
sure how many so called leadership team come forward to connect with the employee specially in case any star
employeeputs the resignation.There issomuch to learn from PMModi on his traits of connecting & motivating the
others.
Aiminghigh and accomplishedplans: to winUP electionwasmore important forPMModi to establish hiscredibility
as PM & maintain his charismatic image in public. To achieve this, PM Modi and his strategic team made 2 years’
agenda for UP and continuously worked on it and made attempt to accomplish the plan and finally achieved it.
Contrary to this, opposition was busy in changing the strategy and enforced their alliance on people.
There isbig lessontoachieve longtermgoalsforanyemployee ororganizationthatstrategiesshouldbe made simple
and clarityto all co-workers. Review onstrategiesshouldbe sensiblebut avoid to make it complex for co-workers to
workon itsaccomplishments.One of the example, companies who make the plan during acquisition and mergers.,
later on fails due to poor acquisition strategies and as a result killing of good brands.
Learning from mistakesand changing gears: Anotherkeylearningfromthisstate electionwintolearnfrommistakes
and avoid to repeat it. In 2015 Bihar state election, Modi team lost badly but soon stood up from failure and those
mistakesnotrepeatedinUP election as a result big win. Similarly, any organization does the mistake in making the
strategies and not anticipated properly the risks and as a results failure but ability to quickly learn from mistake ,
make organization more stable, stronger & successful.
Count self-achievements rather other’s failures: When opposition was busy in changing the strategies and putting
blamesonPMModi and Government,PMModi and histeam wasable to establish the government’s success on the
remote areaof UP and able to influence the people.Mostof the seatsof thisgovernmenthaswon where people are
mostlybenefittedfromthe government schemeslike gasconnection, electricity, dhan jan etc. However, opposition
was more comfortable in old traditional ways of campaigning and not able to anticipate this is New India.
Similarly,foranyemployeemore importanttofirmonhison achievementsandfailure alsorathertoblame otherson
failures. Employee should have the proper justification why he could not achieve the goal.
This is something which I personally learnt from PMModi and like to share with all. This is my own way of thinking
and do not connect this with any employee, organization or any political party.
