206 Jefferson Street
San Francisco, CA – Fisherman’s Wharf is San Francisco’s number one visitor destination with
over 9 million visitors a year. The Wharf is the most significant income generator for the Port of
San Francisco and provides over 8,000 jobs.
Since 2006 the San Francisco Planning Department has been working with the Department of
Public Works, the MTA and Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District, and the residents,
employees, property owners and business owners to redesign Fisherman's Wharf for how it is used
today. Phase I of the Jefferson Street Improvement project included widening and creating new
sidewalks, better pedestrian scale lighting, a cement roadway with a unique design, new trees and
the expansion of sidewalk cafe style seating. Besides creating a safer and more beautiful Jefferson
Street, Phase I increased business along the thoroughfare 10-30%.
"I'm pleased that our new budget will include funding for planning of Phase II of the Jefferson
Street Improvements. It important to District 3 and our City to keep Fisherman's Wharf vibrant,
bustling and safe for all visitors, residents and workers." stated Supervisor Julie Christensen, who
lobbied heavily for completion of the Jefferson Street project.
Troy Campbell, Executive Director for the Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District
conveyed, "Fisherman’s Wharf has the distinction of being the number one destination for San
Francisco’s number one industry, tourism. Since its completion in June of 2013 Phase 1 has
demonstrated that investing in Fisherman’s Wharf is a good return on investment for the city.
Member, Board of Supervisors City and County of San Francisco
District 3
Therefore, we are so grateful to the Mayor and Supervisor Christensen for their ongoing support
of this project and for fiscally investing in the safety, aesthetics and infrastructure of Fisherman’s
Wharf for the residents of San Francisco and the 10 million people that visit here annually."
The next phase of Jefferson Street will see the continuation of the striped concrete roadway from
Jones Street east to Powell Street. The design will also create a wood deck in front of the Sport
Fishing Fleet, additional trees, better lighting, pedestrian and bicycle improvements and safety
measures as well as expanded sidewalks in some areas.
