This research article investigates how young sexual minority women's (YSMW) perceptions of fit with lesbian community norms relate to their experiences of depression and anxiety. The study surveyed 504 YSMWs aged 18-35 on their identification with the lesbian community and how their own characteristics compared to standards of who they ideally want to be and ought to be, as well as lesbian community standards. Results found that discrepancies from both self and community ideal standards predicted higher depression, while discrepancies from both self and community ought standards related to greater anxiety. Identification with the lesbian community moderated these relationships, such that discrepancies were more strongly linked to negative affect for YSMWs with stronger community identification.
