Brian Bush grew up in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania and started working at a young age by delivering newspapers and doing odd jobs to save money. He used his savings to start his own lawn care business at age 16. Through hard work and reinvesting profits, he was able to grow his small businesses and pursue other ventures. While a career as a pilot did not work out due to 9/11, Bush focused on expanding his existing businesses. He now owns multiple businesses in the areas of lawn care, property management, and more. Bush feels he has achieved the American Dream through hard work and determination, but notes it requires long hours and overcoming challenges. 'American Dream'
BETTENDORF, Iowa (CNN) -- It's wonderful to be here today. I feel right at home in Bettendorf, which is just a stone's throw from my
home state of Illinois. But the truth is, we share more than the banks of a great river.
If you spend time in Washington, you hear a lot about the divisions in our country. About how we're becoming more separated by
geography and ideology; race and religion; wealth and opportunity. And we've had plenty of politicians who try to take advantage of these
divisions - pitting Americans against one another, or targeting different messages to different audiences.
But as I've traveled around Iowa and the rest of the country these last nine months, I haven't been struck by our differences - I've been
impressed by the values and hopes that we share. In big cities and small towns; among men and women; young and old; black, white, and
brown - Americans share a faith in simple dreams. A job with wages that can support a family. Health care that we can count on and
afford. A retirement that is dignified and secure. Education and opportunity for our kids. Common hopes. American dreams.
These are dreams that drove my grandparents. After my grandfather served in World War II, the GI Bill gave him a chance to go to college,
and the government gave them a chance to buy a home. They moved West, worked hard at different jobs, and were able to provide my
mother with a decent education, to help raise me, and to save enough to retire.
These are dreams that drove my father-in-law. A city worker in Chicago, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 30. But
every day, even when he had to leave an hour earlier in the morning and rely on a walker to get him there, he went to work while his wife
stayed home with the kids. And on that single salary, he provided for his family and sent my wife Michelle and her brother to college. His
dream was to see them do better. And they have.
These are dreams that drove my mother. A single mom - even while relying on food stamps as she finished her education, she followed
her passion for helping others, and raised my sister and me to believe that in America there are no barriers to success - no matter what
color you are, no matter where you're from, no matter how much money you have.
And these are the dreams that led me to Chicago over two decades ago to become a community organizer. The salary - $12,000 a year -
wasn't what my friends would make in the corporate world or at law firms. I didn't know a single person in Chicago. But I knew there were
folks who needed help. The steel plant had closed. Jobs were disappearing. In a forgotten corner of America, the American dream was
slipping awa.

When you google the words American Dream, you find it defined as
“the notion that the American social, economic and political system
makes success possible for every individual.”
It was American historian James Truslow Adams who coined the term The
American Dream. He defines the American Dream as “that dream of a land in
which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity
for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the
European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have
grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages
merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able
to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by
others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.”
Now this is Brian Bush’s definition of the American dream. I grew up in Ellwood City,
graduated from Lincoln High School in 1993. I became an entrepreneur at a young age because
I had big dreams. I started a business delivering the Ellwood City Ledger when I was very young,
in the neighborhood of Wurtemburg Heights where I grew up. I then began mowing my neighbor’s
lawns and doing other odd jobs before I could even drive a car.
I saved all my money and was able to buy a new truck, mowing equipment and trailer. When I was
16 years of age I started Mr. B’s Lawn Service. In the winter months I detailed cars and had enough
business that I was able to rent the old Hazen Dairy out on Rt 65. I saved more money so that I could
pursue my dream of becoming an airplane pilot. I attended Beaver County Community College and later
received my pilot license. In parallel, my small businesses were growing and I began to hire employees.
Tragically, 9/11 happened, and a career of being a pilot was not in my favor, so I decided to focus all my
attention on the businesses I started. It was around that time that I bought the building at 513 Third Street
Ellwood City. I fixed it up and was so proud to operate out of that location. Sadly, a few years later caught fire
and I lost everything. With a lot of hard work and the love and loyalty of friends, family, customers and employees,
I rebuilt and still have my business there. Through the years I purchased Young’s Garden Center, Pennturf Lawn Care
and American Guardian Protection. I still run all of these businesses. Plus, I also rent U Haul trucks and have local
truck rentals as well as help with moving. On May 1st 2012, I went in a partnership with 3 other gentlemen to buy the
Alpine Inn, now called The Loft at 1876 located at 7240 Big Beaver Blvd. Beaver Falls, PA 15010. My latest venture is
Look at My Homes, LLC. We rent and sell homes and have over 40 homes on the market today.
I feel I am living the American Dream every day but this would not be possible if it wasn’t for the love of my wife,
family, friends and employees that are at my side every day and keep me motivated.
Living the American dream is a lot of hard work and comes with a price. I spend countless hours doing what I do; 80+
hours per week. I also have spent countless hours not knowing if I would have enough money for payroll or to pay my bills.
I remember first starting out and washing cars in the freezing cold because I was worried about paying for heat. The winter
that I started snowplowing, there was very little snow and I had no choice but to get a job. For 3 months, I delivered pizza
for Vocelli’s, which was the only time I had worked for someone else.
I am not afraid of hard work and going after my dreams. I plan on growing even more. What slows my growth is finding
good quality people as well as people who want to work. I routinely run ads in the paper only to be disappointed that nobody
responds. Many people just want a paycheck and I’m looking to build a team. Not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur or
work the long hours; and that’s ok. The American Dream lives in the person that wants to work for the employer as well and I
am looking for a few people to grow my business. I want to continue to build my business and need more personnel. So bring
a resume and let’s build a team! I have had many breaks and have had many people teach me, show me and believe in me and
I believe in giving back and helping others. For everyone out there that would want to be an entrepreneur, do it, try it, and live
your dream. It can be very rewarding. Do not let time pass you by and you look back and watch your dreams in the rearview
