- God made a promise to King David that he would have a great descendant whose kingdom would be established forever, and that God would build the temple. This promise is reflected in Psalms 89:35-37.
- The prophet Isaiah foretold that a child would be born who would be given the titles Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, and whose government and peace would have no end, sitting on David's throne forever.
- The birth of Jesus Christ, born of the virgin Mary, fulfilled the promise to David, as God was with us in the form of Jesus, who would save his people from their sins, as was spoken by the prophet.
This document provides a summary of lectures given by teachers at Summit Ministries on the topic of worldview studies. It discusses the importance of having an understanding of the times to know what actions should be taken. It warns against being spoiled through philosophy and vain deceit that are not based on Christ. It emphasizes taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. When worldviews clash, Christians are called to continue in prayer with thanksgiving and to rejoice in difficult times, knowing their joy comes from the Lord.
This document discusses the differences between judgment and conviction. It explains that believers should judge disputes between believers and unrepentant sin or false doctrine, following biblical steps. However, believers should avoid judging others' motives or outward appearances. To avoid a judgmental spirit, one must be forgiving, generous, and a learner rather than a critic. Conviction of sin comes through the Holy Spirit and is necessary for repentance. True conviction illuminates sin for others and causes them discomfort around believers.
The chapter answers two questions: what is the greatest neglect and why does Jesus care about humanity. It discusses how a greater savior requires a greater covenant and greater steadfastness to not drift away. Jesus remembered humanity by taking on human form and experiencing human suffering like pain, thirst and death. He sanctifies believers and calls us brethren, demonstrating his humanity. The word of God was delivered by angels and confirmed by miracles, making it unalterable and condemning those who neglect it while offering salvation.
The document discusses 4 key things learned from Acts 1: God's timing is unknown to us; the power of the Holy Spirit coming upon believers; the importance of devotion to prayer while waiting; and that God's purpose is invincible and will be fulfilled despite obstacles. It also notes how scripture from Psalms was fulfilled.
Ruth provides a concise 3 sentence summary:
The document discusses lessons from the Old Testament books of Ruth and Hannah, focusing on how Ruth demonstrated accountability to God which transformed her perception, attitude, choices and actions, and how Hannah completely released her burden of barrenness to God and was blessed with a son, Samuel, whom she also released back to God's service. It examines the decline of the priesthood under Eli and his sons, and how God established Samuel as a faithful prophet in their place.
The term “spiritual warfare” is never used in some churches, preached a little in others and emphasized heavily in a smaller segment. Much of what is taught is fuzzy, incomplete and lacking in principles to help the listener apply them personally. Do you have a clear understanding of what spiritual warfare is and how to wage it effectively over your life and loved ones?
This document discusses the importance of forgiveness. It notes that forgiveness allows God's love to purge hate from our hearts and cleanse the desire for revenge. It asks questions about how often we should forgive others according to scripture and how forgiving others can make us children of God. It also quotes President Hinckley that there is no peace without forgiveness and repentance, and that forgiving others can help us be peacemakers.
This document provides a spiritual checkup to evaluate spiritual health. It uses medical tools as metaphors for aspects of spiritual health - the heart, blood, temperature, sensitivity, and vision. For each, it poses reflective questions. It then prescribes daily spiritual practices for good health: Bible study, prayer, worship/fellowship, and rest. Regular spiritual exercise through these disciplines nourishes and strengthens one's relationship with God.
This document discusses how a believer's income is "fixed" by God, not in the traditional sense of a fixed income from retirement or disability, but rather fixed in blessings. It explores different meanings of "fixed" including to repair something broken, to predetermine an outcome, to get an addictive dose, and to get even with an adversary. The document encourages believers that what was broken in their lives has been fixed by God, their victorious outcome has been predetermined, they can be addicted to God's word and promises, and they can fix injustices by making up for mistakes. It defines a believer's income broadly as additions or increases of love, grace, mercy, peace, revelation, favor, promotion,
The document outlines the four keys to revival according to 2 Chronicles 7:14 - humility, prayer, seeking God's face, and repentance. It provides discussion on what each key means, such as humbling oneself before God through admitting needs and confessing sins, making prayer a regular practice through different acts of prayer, seeking God and His righteousness above all else, and truly turning away from sin through repentance and obedience.
This document provides background information and discussion questions about the Book of Mormon. It discusses the geography and socio-political context of Lehi's time in Jerusalem around 600 BC. It also examines recurring themes in the early chapters of 1 Nephi such as murmuring, keeping the commandments, and seeking the Lord. Several quotes from prophets emphasize always following the living prophet and caution against making assumptions not revealed through proper authority.
This document provides a summary of 1 Peter 5:1-9. It outlines four key points: 1) roles of leadership where elders are called to shepherd willingly and not lord over others; 2) relating to others with humility; 3) relating to God by humbling oneself under God's mighty hand; and 4) resisting the devil by standing firm in one's faith. The overall message is about maintaining the proper attitudes and relationships in the Christian community through humility, submission to authority, and trusting God rather than being proud or fearful.
In the first of our FOLLOW Series I shared about Fasting (in preparation for a Church wide fast) We focused on the practical ways we can fast and how to approach, begin and end a successful fast. We explored Matthew 6 where Jesus was affirming Fasting as a significant spiritual responsibility AND indicating how it had changed in spirit under His new Kingdom. The practical piece at the end inspired by Elmer Towns helps people pray the Lords Prayer with a sense of flow and confidence. ENJOY.
Motivation comes from an inner drive or reason to act in a certain way. Successful motivation involves getting people to willingly do what is needed for a divine vision. Motivation comes through having a clear understanding of God's timing and purpose, faith that God rewards those who seek Him, a desire to please God and be rewarded, clear goals, strong relationships, personal growth, and modeling examples of faith and leadership. Providing recognition, enjoyment in tasks, and breaks can also boost motivation.
This document discusses identity, particularly identity in Christ. It begins by listing various aspects of the author's identity such as their nationality, religion, and name. It then defines identity and different forms of identification like fingerprints. The rest of the document explores finding one's identity in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. It lists aspects of a Christian identity such as being royalty, free from sin, and equipped. It emphasizes the importance of not conforming to the world and renewing one's mind by focusing on godly values. Finally, it discusses why having a godly identity centered in Christ is important for focus, strength, purpose and more.
The document discusses the "backward" wisdom of God, where God's ways are not the same as human ways. It provides examples of how humanity finds freedom through slavery, life through death, and strength through weakness. The document argues that true power comes from realizing one's weakness and dependence on Christ, not natural abilities or self-sufficiency. It outlines how through difficulties, commitment to God and serving others, one can experience Christ's power for salvation and service. In the end, it encourages admitting weakness to Christ to access his power.

The document discusses various perspectives on success from a Christian viewpoint. It begins by asking questions about what truly constitutes success and greatness. It then examines biblical examples of people who were successful according to God, despite facing difficulties or setbacks. Several key points are made:
- True success in life involves faithfully serving God and becoming like Jesus, not worldly measures like wealth or power.
- Success depends on one's values and living according to God's priorities like loving others, trusting in Him, and dedicating one's life to His purposes.
- Maintaining integrity, self-control, and submitting to authority are essential for godly success.
The document discusses how Christians can view themselves as spiritual athletes in a race towards heaven. It makes several comparisons between physical athletes and the spiritual disciplines Christians must follow. These include having Jesus as our coach, obeying God's rules as outlined in scripture, following strict spiritual training and disciplines daily through practices like prayer, study and meditation, and not becoming discouraged even when facing difficulties as we press on towards the goal of living with Jesus for eternity and receiving the prize of righteousness. Maintaining a healthy physical body is also important, as our bodies are gifts from God, and physical exercise can help keep our minds receptive to God.
This document provides encouragement to live up to one's calling through three essentials:
1) Keeping a heavenly perspective and not becoming prideful or complacent.
2) Continuing to live out one's God-given purpose in life like marching as a soldier.
3) Keeping godly company and being inspired by other faithful people. The goal is to run the race of life with endurance and complete the task Jesus has given of making disciples.
“Divine Providence In The Life of Todays Christian"Don McClain
Problems are a part of life and how one handles these problems is related to his view of God. Believing in divine providence helps one to cope with the vicissitudes of life. The word itself never appears in Holy Scripture in reference to God, (Acts 24:1), but the concept is found Throughout the Bible. This lesson examines what the Bible teaches about this important subject. - MP3 / PPT / KEYNOTE / PDF - 3/9/2014 - http://w65stchurchofchrist.org/coc/
The document provides 10 steps to avoid backsliding in one's faith as a Christian. It advises staying in fellowship with other believers (step 1), standing firm in one's faith during difficult times (step 2), persevering through endurance (step 3), running the faithfully guided by the Bible to win the eternal prize (step 4), and reminding oneself of God's past faithfulness and hope for the future (step 10).
The Bible says that we also compete, not for a medal, not for a temporary crown of olive leaves, not for honor and personal glory but for a crown that lasts forever.
1) We are all runners in the marathon of life, but only one can win the prize. We must run purposefully to win the eternal prize of life with God.
2) In life's race, we must train with discipline, integrity, and honor, just as athletes do. We strive for an eternal reward rather than one that fades away.
3) We can overcome obstacles like fear and past failures by focusing on Jesus, who ensures victory for those who follow him to the finish line of life.
This document is a summary of a sermon given at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi on May 20, 2018. The sermon discusses the Judgment Seat of Christ mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:9-10, where believers will give an account of their actions during their lifetime and receive rewards. It describes the different crowns or rewards believers can receive for acts of evangelism, faithfulness, shepherding others, self-discipline, and perseverance. While salvation is a free gift, believers are motivated to live holy lives out of love for God knowing they will one day give an account before the Judgment Seat of Christ.
This document outlines a message about running the Christian race to finish. It discusses how life presents many obstacles like curves and difficulties, but Christians should be excited to run the race God has laid out. To finish requires making a firm decision, laying down anything that hinders your run, and staying focused on God. Running to finish brings joy despite opposition faced along the way. The message encourages believers to make up their mind to finish the race no matter what through endurance.
This document discusses overcoming blocks that can discourage us in running the Christian race. It encourages looking to Jesus as an example of humility and obedience in order to conquer these blocks. By training ourselves to be godly, bringing our thoughts into obedience to Christ, and giving full effort, we can have a competitive advantage through securing God's love and running to receive the prize.
The document discusses how stress can negatively impact physical health and provides biblical principles for coping with stress. It notes that the Bible teaches we should focus on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, and praiseworthy. When facing overwhelming problems or stress, the Bible instructs us to pray, spend time in nature, and find healthy activities. It also promises that God will comfort us in times of trouble and provide peace. Even in very difficult, stressful situations, God can give us strength and help us endure through prayer.
This document contains the text of a sermon given at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi on rewards in heaven. The sermon discusses that believers will appear before the judgment seat of Christ after the rapture to receive rewards for their works during their lifetime according to what they have done, whether good or bad. It outlines five special crowns or rewards that believers can receive for outstanding service, including evangelism, expectation of Christ's return, discipling others, discipline in competing for the prize, and enduring trials. Other rewards mentioned are heavenly treasures, commendation from God, and promises to overcomers in Revelation such as eating from the tree of life.
The document discusses two key ways to please God:
1. By aiming to please God with your thoughts and emotions, as God judges the intentions of the heart.
2. By consistently drawing near to God through worship, prayer, and intentionally seeking him, rather than just seeking rewards. Making knowing God your top priority and aim in life is essential to pleasing him.
Bible Lessons For Youth - Running for the GoldKen Sapp
The Bible says that we also compete, not for a medal, not for a temporary crown of olive leaves, not for honor and personal glory but for a crown that lasts forever.

The passages encourage running with discipline and focus as if in training for a competition. They emphasize continuing in faith until the end to receive the victor's crown that is eternal life with God. While Christians must work out their salvation, it is by God's grace that they are able to do so and will receive the prize.
Youth Devotional - Florence Chadwick: Focused on the GoalKen Sapp
The 4th of July was not Florence Chadwick's day of her greatest triumph. It wasn't her most glorious moment. It was the time of her greatest defeat. It was also the time she decided never to give up ever again. As we celebrate Independence Day, let us also remember our independence from a life of sin and to never lose sight of Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
The document outlines the steps to winning the Christian race. First, solid preparation is required through reading the Bible and practicing God's will daily to exercise the body, soul, and spirit. Second, one must fix their faith solely in Jesus Christ without deviating to other beliefs. Third, since the race has begun, one should use all their energy to love God with all their heart, soul, and mind. Finally, to gain heaven, Christians must read the Bible and practice God's word regularly, keeping their faith in Jesus Christ and loving God with their whole life.

The three key points are:
1) The disciples went to Galilee as Jesus had instructed even though some doubted after his death.
2) When they saw Jesus, he told them he had all authority in heaven and earth and commanded them to make disciples of all nations.
3) Jesus promised that he would be with the disciples always, demonstrating that God's promises are ones that can be counted on.
The document is a Bible study on faith based on Hebrews 11:1-2. It discusses what faith is, how people in the Bible like Abel, Noah, and Enoch lived by faith, and encourages growing one's faith through reading the Bible and walking by faith rather than sight. Faith gives assurance of things unseen and allows believers to face challenges and receive blessings from God.
(1) The document summarizes a Bible study on Matthew 27:20-26 about Jesus being crucified.
(2) It discusses how Pilate tried to release Jesus but the crowd demanded Barabbas be released instead and that Jesus be crucified.
(3) The resurrection signifies God's approval of Jesus' work on Earth and allows him to become the powerful spiritual force to redeem humanity.
The document summarizes the key events in Mark 1:1-11 where John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus and baptizes Him. It emphasizes that Jesus came to offer salvation to all people, not just an elite few, and that spreading His gospel message of new life transforms lives. The power of the true gospel remains today to heal, deliver, give hope, and bring people into God's kingdom.

Satan tried to get Jesus to turn stones to bread when hungry, jump from the temple to prove He was the Son of God, and bow down to Satan in exchange for all the kingdoms of the world. Each time, Jesus overcame the temptation by quoting Scripture. He was able to resist Satan's tests through His strong faith in God's word.

A375 Example Taste the taste of the Lord, the taste of the Lord The taste of...franktsao4
It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

2. “Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
(24) Don’t you realize that in a race
everyone runs, but only one person
gets the prize? So run to win!
(25) All athletes are disciplined in their
training. They do it to win a prize that
will fade away, but we do it for an
eternal prize.
(26) So I run with purpose in every step. I
am not just shadowboxing.
3. 3
(27) I discipline my body like an athlete,
training it to do what it should.
Otherwise, I fear that after preaching
to others I myself might be disqualified.

Obstacles are those frightful things you
see when you take your eyes off your goal.

“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
4. 4
As we have spent the last several weeks
concentrating on how churches and leaders
can get IT and keep IT; one of the areas that
has caught my attention is center on
FOCUS. Many of us understand what it
means to be focused on a goal. Many of us
also understand that we have lost our focus,
and thus find ourselves looking for that goal
that we long ago sort, but never achieved
simply because we allowed other things to
block our focus.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
5. 5
In 1Corinthians, Paul finds himself dealing
with the problems of people who had so
much promise, potential, and prospect for
success but somehow failed to attain the
goals that they had set for themselves. We
witness this calamity on an almost daily
basis in the life of people who started out in
life with all of the intellectual competencies,
physical capabilities and personalities that
clearly
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
6. 6
suggested that they would ultimately
achieve every goal. However,
somewhere along the way they lost their
focus. They could no longer see the goal
clearly. They even stopped looking for it
because their lives had changed in such
ways that they didn’t care about the
goals that would have given them
measures of success.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
7. 7
Some were captured by the appeal of drugs,
alcohol, and other deleterious and
debilitating habits that destroyed their
outlook for positive outcomes. So, they
settled for less - never achieving the goals
that they anticipated in the days of their
youth, or the early years of life when they
got degrees which would prove and show to
the world their greatness.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
8. 8
They are now loitering and feeling sorry for
themselves because others with less talent
and abilities who did not have the same
opportunities they had are surpassing them.
During the last few weeks as I watched
some of the playoff games that will
ultimately lead to one team fulfilling its goal
and earning a championship, I realized that
the difference between a losing team and a
winning team has much to do with their
determination to achieve their goal.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
9. 9
When you have goals and you focus on
those goals, Paul’s letter helps you to
understand that we cannot allow ourselves
to be stopped by whatever hindrances,
struggles, or impediments might get in our
way. I watched as two teams battle in the
very last seconds of the game, to put more
points on the board by crossing the goal
line, and scoring the necessary points for
victory.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
10. 10
They battled back and forth in those last
seconds with each team scoring a
touchdown. In the end, San Francisco
put the last points on the board because
New Orleans lost its focus and left a
player open who managed to get across
the goal line.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
11. 11
Paul in 1Corinthians tries to help the people
who are a part of an emerging church in
Corinth to understand that they would have
struggles and will face many problems; but,
if they stay focused on the goal they would
not only be able to overcome their
struggles, but also be able to share in the
joy of the victories that they could celebrate
by virtue of the souls that were saved.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
12. 12
I believe that victory is always possible
when we know what the goal is and
how best to get there. Paul gives us
three necessary requirements for
reaching our goals:
Discerning the purpose
We must know why we are running for
the goal. In the text, he says that we
run because we have a purpose.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
13. 13
The purpose is to win the prize, but we
are not always certain that just because
we enter the race we will automatically
win the prize.
Paul puts it this way:
“(24) Don’t you realize that in a race
everyone runs, but only one person gets
the prize? So run to win!”
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
14. 14
Winning the race requires purpose, focus,
and discipline. Paul uses this illustration to
help us as Christians to understand that the
Christian life requires self-denial and
grueling preparation. Too many of us never
reach the goal because we refuse to give up
the things that are hindering our ability to
be focused on the ultimate prize. It takes as
much effort to lose as it does to win.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
15. 15
As Christians we sometimes find our focus
through our relationship with Jesus Christ.
We wanted a better life, and we changed
our focus from living a life of sin to one of
living for the saving power and grace of
God. But, somewhere along the way, the
devil stepped in and clouded our focus,
causing us to no longer be able to see the
goal. So, we backslid and lost our
opportunity to win the prize.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
16. 16
We must be as equipped and vigorous as
an athlete, when he or she makes a
decision to pursue a goal and win a prize.
In our faith community that prize is the
meaningful salvation that transforms
our lives. It moves us from allowing the
dark clouds to block us from the success
that God has made available to us.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
17. 17
What is your goal? Are you ready to
move from your state of brokenness,
fear, constantly losing, and watching
other people always bypass you and get
the very prize that you sought?
2. The Plan
To live a life that is focused on the goal
and the pursuit of excellence. You must
have a plan.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
18. 18
Just as you plan for a wedding, a party, or
any other event, you must also have a
focused plan for your life. Goals do not
come to you, you have to chase after them.
In your chase, you must not be merely
running as if there is nothing to accomplish,
you must run with the belief that you have
within you the ability to bring about a
conclusion and that is success.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
19. 19
It is interesting how we plan for things in our
lives. We will do everything possible to
make sure that we accomplish the goal that
we set out to do. No matter how much it
cost, the amount of money it takes, or how
many hours it requires; if our minds are
made up to do it, we just do it.
Paul says it this way: “(25) All athletes are
disciplined in their training.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
20. 20
They do it to win a prize that will fade
away, but we do it for an eternal prize.
(26) So I run with purpose in every step. I am
not just shadowboxing.”
Sometimes we have to give up something
good in order to do what God wants us to
do. If we know that this is our God-given
goal, then our focus must be on the
ultimate prize that only Jesus can give us.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
21. 21
In order to get it we must have a sharp
and clear vision for what God wants for
us as we prepare for our victories. We
must have a narrowly defined focus
where the images we see of the ultimate
goal becomes so much a part of our
mindset and our belief system that we
believe nothing can stop us from having
one victory after another.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
22. 22
If we stay focused we will come to the
realization that God has so much that is
beneficial to us that if we continue to allow
ourselves to walk in favor with Him we will
ultimately cross the goal line and win the
prize.
3. Winning the Prize
When we have remained focused,
understood our purpose, and kept our
visions on the prize we are ready to show
the world that we have IT.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
23. 23
And because we have IT we don’t give up in
the face of our struggles, we persevere in
spite of our challenges; and, we do not allow
ourselves to quit when Satan attacks.
We have the promise and we have the prize.
With the will of God we dare to proclaim
that we are the IT because we have IT. The
greatness of God has emboldened in us to
the degree that we are not fearful of Satan
or anybody else.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
24. 24
Our mind is on the victories that we have
won because we stay focused on the goal.
We don’t know who will win the Super Bowl,
but one thing we do know is that through
Christ who has given us the victory, we have
already crossed the goal line and we are
winners. We have the prize because there is
no prize that is greater than the joy of the
Lord that is embodied in us.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
25. 25
The prize may not be visible to others,
but we know through the power of God
we have fulfilled the promise. We have
declared to the world that:
A charge to keep I have,
A God to Glorify,
A never dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky.
“Focus on the Prize”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)
