On May 3, 2015, a Laughing Dove was photographed on the island of Sal in Cape Verde - the first record of this species in the Cape Verde Islands. The Laughing Dove occurs widely in Africa and western Asia. It has expanded its range in recent decades, including establishing populations in the Canary Islands. The individual observed on Sal was likely the subspecies S. s. senegalensis, which occurs in Senegal and southern Mauritania near the Cape Verde Islands. This represents an important range expansion for the species.
