Music magazine front cover:

My music magazine front cover design challenges forms and conventions of real
magazines because due to the colour scheme being black and white – This is different
to most magazine covers as they are usually bright and outgoing, where as mine is
quite dark and dramatic. I choose to use these colours as I wanted to give the cover a
dramatic effect and to attract the reader to the text more than the main image.
3. In what ways does your magazine design use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real magazines?
Music magazine contents Page:
My music magazine contents page design mainly uses conventions of a real magazine as I
have purposely included three insert images on the page. This is normally what you would
see on a music magazine contents page.
I choose to do this to fit in with my festival theme by adding images of people having a
good time at different festivals (named on the front cover of my magazine). This
immediately gives festivals a positive vibe to the reader – Making the purpose of my
magazine effective.

4. In what ways does your magazine design use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real magazines?
Music magazine double page spread:
My music magazine double page spread uses the conventions of a real magazine, as I have made
a whole page of the double spread the main image. This is common in double page spreads as it
draws attention to the dominant image which should then lead the reader into reading the text.
I think my main image is effective as I have used an attractive picture of my artist (DJ Tompson)
which will appeal to customers and people who are interested in DJ’s.

5. How does your magazine represent particular social
groups?
Due to my magazine questionnaire, it was
apparent that my magazine front cover
mostly attracted the older teens (16-18 year
olds).
I also think the magazine I designed is best
suited to that age group as typically it is
more common for older teenagers to go to
festivals.
Also my main image is of older teenager
girls which may make it more effective and
appealing to younger people rather then
older adults.
6. What kind of media institution might distribute
your magazine and why?
‘The festival guide’ might distribute my magazine as we are both promoting the same
theme. This could put my magazine at a downfall as the Festival Guide offers more
festivals available then mine, However, the Festival Guide may be at a downfall
when competing with my magazine as I give my readers an insight into what acts
would be where and have a wider range of acts listed.
7. Who would be the audience for your magazine?
As explained in the previous slide, when I designed my Music magazine I
imaged what would attract me into buying and reading it. I would say my
magazine audience is best suited to older teenagers/younger adults. This is
because it is most commonly found that they are festivals target audience –
This doesn’t include younger teens as the majority of festivals have age limits.
(Typically 16+)
8. How did you attract/address your audience?
I hoped to attract my audience into reading
my magazine by listening the most popular
festivals acts on my front cover. This
immediately would attract anyone who is
interested in the artists.
By listing these acts it should then influence
the reader into continuing the magazine by
reading what acts will be where and when.
Meaning my magazine would have
successfully served its purpose.
9. What have you learnt about technologies from
the process of constructing your magazine?
As I do not personally own a Mac, I learnt about a lot of new technology apps online.
To complete all my magazines I used ‘Photoshop’. I used/learnt many different skills such a
editing pictures and text. I found it challenging to work with at first but after a lot of practise
I can now successfully use it, which made completing my work much easier.
10. Looking at your preliminary task - what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Overall, I have enjoyed making magazine designs a lot. Its been challenging but also fun.
I often read celebrity magazines so learning all about the conventions you need to build a magazine
up and what it needs to be successful, and then to be able to make me own one was very interesting
as I had never done it before I started Media Studies.
I have learnt a lot about what makes a magazines and the conventions it needs to be effective and
serve its purpose. I am very happy with my finished designs of each magazine – Each one has a lot
of detail and the my personal touch of my pictures of me at festivals with my friends.
