Our Environment – how can you and I help save it?
Albert Einstein said "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." Our
planet is in trouble! Pretty much everywhere you look today you will hear or see something
reminding you that our planet's health is failing. If our planet where a person it would be about time
to buy the burial plot and write out the last will and testament. Just a brief list of the things that is
ailing her is – pollution, acid rain, climate change, the destruction of rainforests and other wild
habitats, the decline and extinction of thousands of species of animals and plants....and so on.
I think everyone in here can agree that all of these issues exist and that humans have caused them.

Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper. Our natural resources such as trees,
oil, coal and aluminum are used up in enormous amounts to make these products and the resources
will one day be completely used up. So in order to cut down on the energy used lets reuse.
What can you do?
* Sort out your trash. Organic matter (e.g. potato peelings, left over food, tea leaves etc.) can be put
in to a compost heap in the garden and used as a good, natural fertilizer for the plants.
*Aluminum cans, glass bottles and newspapers are often collected from our doorsteps, but other
items such as plastic bottles, juice cartons and cardboard may not be, in which case they can be
taken to nearby recycling banks. You can find out where they are by just searching on line. * Use
recycled paper to help save trees. Chlorine bleach is usually used to make newspapers and this
pollutes rivers. It's better to use unbleached, recycled paper whenever you can. * Take your old
clothes to charity shops. Some are sold, others are returned to textile mills for recycling. * Try to
avoid buying plastic. It's hard to recycle. One way to cut down on plastic is to refuse to use plastic
bags offered by supermarkets and use cloth re–useable shopping bags instead, or re–use plastic bags
over and over again, until they wear out and then recycle them.

My Last Day On Earth
Sometimes people ask what you would do if it was your last day on earth. Some might say
something daring like, swimming with sharks or skydiving. Others just wished for something
simple, maybe just to hang out with their friends one last time. I pondered what my answer could
be, tomorrow wasn't my last day on Earth, there was no all important matter. I was just leaving,
temporarily, or that's how I thought about it. A knock interrupted my train of thoughts, it crashed
with halt as my mother entered my room. "Are you finished packing yet," she asked, glimpsing at
the walls of my room, once decorated with awards and photos of friends and family, now
completely vacant. "Almost, just have a couple other things left," I lied, glancing at the half filled
suitcase behind my ancient dresser. "I'm sorry about this, about everything," she whispered, her
voice filled with guilt and remorse. "It's not your fault, none of this is," I replied. She smiled
weakly before exiting the room. I, once again, was unaccompanied by anything besides my
thoughts, this was it, tomorrow would be my last day here, in the U.S, the place I called home; how
was I supposed to abandon everything I've ever known? Pushing that miserable thought aside, I
focused on an important one; what should I do tomorrow? I'd considered visiting my friends, but
quickly eliminated that idea from my brain, seeing as it might be more depressing than enjoyable.
For the first time, I desired adventure, something daring and bold.

For decades the age of the Earth has been a major conflict between science and religion, but why
is it such a big conflict? If, in the year AD 1600, an individual had asked an educated European
how old the planet Earth was and to recount its history, the response would have been that it was

My Last Day On Earth Essay
"You never know when your last day on Earth will be, make the best out of everyday." My mother
told my brother and I the night before tragedy struck. I went to bed on that quiet night in May;
woken up by a terrible and heartbreaking nightmare. The nightmare was composed of my cousin,
Travis, dying in a car crash. Staying awake for ten more minutes to receive a phone call that my
nightmare has become a reality. Being only 14 years old, I couldn't quite grasp the idea that my best
friend, my other brother, and my big cousin has just left all of us forever. For the next 5 years of my

best out of everyday" to everything I did/do. Travis would have never known his last day on Earth
would be May 21st, 2012, only 19 years old. Life can be taken away from us in split second; so why

Before the 1960s, environmentalism mainly focused on conservation of resources and the
wilderness and was apparent through Theodore Roosevelt's creation of five National Parks, one
hundred fifty National Forests and about two hundred thirty acres of land set aside for conservation.
In the 1960s, the environmental movement was really able to garner support as it was during many
other movements such as Civil Rights, Peace, and Women's. Many consider the spark for
environmentalism to be Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962), which exposed the harmful effects of
pollutants such as DDT on the environment and the public. While minute amounts of DDT cause
little to no harm to the organisms that are affected, as DDT moves up the food chain, it becomes
more and more concentrated. A generally accepted value is that for each level up in the food chain,
the concentration of pollutants increases by a thousand times. The effects of Silent Spring cannot be
overestimated. As people began to become more informed about pollution, more people demanded
that the federal government take action. The environmental movement then grew to encompass

I think I speak for many people when I say that I can’t wait for the day when it finally
warms up around here. While being an Oregon resident has it’s advantages, it just seems to
lack in the sunshine department, and what a better way to brighten up any day than with 200 degree
weather. No more wasting snow days at school, no more long sleeved shirts, and finally an end to all
that SPF mumbo jumbo. You know that without an O–zone layer there’s going to be nothing
strong enough on the market to protect our delicate skin. They’ll probably have some

changed. The fervor and desire for environmental protection legislation have certainly lessened. Still,
the impact and importance of the initial protest are still felt and the motivations behind the first Earth

the anniversary celebrations garner significant publicity. Each big celebration has a main purpose,

one must be consistent. When we know the statement, then according to the Bible the dust from
which man was made was what he returned to when he died. What did that mean? Apparently,
anyone can observe that then we died we returned to dust, just as the Bible said. Dust of the ground,

But over that couple of weeks the weather and matters started to get worse. The rain wouldn't stop
so people were flooded in their houses, thunder and lightning would occasionally come and when
it did, it sounded like someone hitting a symbol in your ear, it was so loud and frightening. There
were also several earthquakes that didn't help matters as towns were being destroyed and no one
could help dying or injured people. The world was one big disaster zone waiting to hit you in the
face. This was when Chelsea decided to take drastic actions. She wanted to help improve
situations even though the meteorite couldn't be stopped. She got the government to fly in food,
necessities, the emergency crew and people willing to risks there lives for others. This all went to
plan and for once in her life she felt like a woman, that she had always wanted to be. While people
were busy doing work and helping out, Daisy sat in her house full of guilt and fear of what might

Going Green Lately the phrase "going green" has become a part of everyday discussion and debate.
People are being told to turn off the lights, buy energy–saving appliances, and drive less. What
people are not being told is why, specifically. Global warming is the increase of the Earth's
average temperature. Greenhouse gases are the cause of this problem; carbon dioxide, nitrogen
oxide and methane (1). Normally the earth's atmosphere lets these gases in but does not release all
of it. The excess gases keep the plant warm enough to sustain life. However over time, the
atmosphere has sustained damage from chemicals, like the ones released in fossil fuels, and now the

Most hybrids run use internal combustion engines and electrical motors (2). Internal combustion
engines require fuel to create a combustion reaction which powers the engine. An electric motor uses
electrical energy to produce mechanical energy which can then run the motor. An on–board
rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) stores enough energy, which is also rechargeable, to
run the electric motor (2). To lower fuel consumption, the RESS regenerates power, or energy,
through regenerative breaking or sometimes through the combustion engine. Regenerative
breaking uses some of the energy produced by the car when accelerating and stores it. This is why
hybrid cars cannot compete in the market for speed. In more modern models, a mechanism
allows for energy to be taken from the combustion engine to charge the cars battery or electrical
motor (2). In the sense of "going green", hybrids reduce idle emissions by shutting off the ICE
during idle times, like stop lights and traffic, and then restarting it when the car needs to move. A
smaller and more efficient engine also cuts back on power compared to large engines where all the
parts may not be used, but need to be powered, thus reducing emissions (2). Other benefits from
