Massage originated from the Greek words meaning "to knead" and has been practiced for medicinal purposes in ancient China, India, Greece and Rome. Hipocrates in the 5th century BC recognized massage as an important medical treatment. In the 19th century, Swedish doctor Peter Ling further developed massage techniques. Modern science has demonstrated that massage has both local and systemic effects on the body through stimulation of circulation and the nervous system. There are various types of massage including medical, hygienic, and sports massage as well as techniques like Swedish, shiatsu, and aromatherapy massage. Massage has wide-ranging therapeutic applications for conditions like muscle strains, arthritis, stress, and chronic pain.
1. The word massage arose from the Greek word ‘’masein’’ and ‘’massev,’’
which means kneading, rubbing, fingering.
Massage had been well-known in ancient China, India, Greece and Rome.
Hipocrates (460. - 377. B. C.) thought that massage is an important medicative
factor.
Swedish doctor P. Linga (-1776. – 1839.) ensured the upswing of the
massage. A lot has been done to substantiate the efficiency of the massage. Ever-new scientific
substantiation has been developed, which has proved that massage has not only a local effect, but
also a reflexive one (the counter-action of the body on the irritation).
