1. The story is about a very ugly man, called the Elephant man. He is called the elephant man
because of his face but his name is Mr.Merrick; it is very,very big and looks like a bag filled
with books. One day when Dr.Frederick Treves was going to work at the London Hospital he
noticed a picture in the window of a shop near the Hospital, it was very ugly picture of a man
who looked like an elephant. There was a writing at the buttom of the picture, it said: Come in
and see the elephant man- Two pence!. Treves walked in to the store; it was dirty and smelled
bad. There was a dirty man wearing a old coat and smoking a cigarett in the shop. The man
asked what Dr.Treves wanted; I‘d like to see the elephant man,please – Dr. Treves said. ,,It‘s
not possible- the shop is closing now, you can come back tomorrow‘‘- said the man in the
shop. But Dr.Treves wanted to see the elephant man now- he couldn‘t come back tomorrow
because he had a lot of work to do but instead he offered the man twelfe pence instead of two.
The man smiled and took the offer. Then they went in to a little room at the back of the shop,
The smell in there was horrible. The elephant man sat on a chair behind a table in the middle
of the room. He did not move or smile- his head was very big and he couldn‘t make any facial
movements at all. His left hand was beautiful, it was like a young women‘s hand. Dr.Treves
had seen many things at the hospital but nothing like this- he wanted to get out of the room.
Dr.Treves told the man that he was a doctor at the London hospital and wanted to take a look
at the elephant man there, Mr.Silcock was okey with it but Dr. Treves was wondering how
they could get him there; often when he was out among the puplic-people was afraid of
him,others laughed and sometimes they were put in jail. Mr.Silcock came up with a solution;
bring a cab- said Mr.Silcock. Next morning Dr.Treves arrived at the shop in a Cab with dark
windows so Mr.Merrick could not be seen. Mr.Merrick walked very,very slowly to the cab.
When he was right up against the cab he asked Dr.Treves to help him up the steps-At first
Dr.Treves had a hard time understanding what he said so Mr.Merrick just stood by the door of
the cab for a minute before he asked again. Mr.Merrick walked very slowly up the steps on
the cab and meanwhile the postman ran by and asked if Mr.Merrick was ill, Dr.Treves
responed quickly and told him that this was a women and that he was going to the hospital
with her. There we‘er also three young boys behind the postman that laughed at Mr.Merrick.
Dr.Treves quickly closed the door and the cab drove away. Well,this was difficult,wasn‘t it?-
