ave you ever wondered what the Earth looks
like from space? Humans have always been
fascinated by space travel. Now, that dream
has become a reality, thanks to three billionaires –
Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk.
All three of them are creating their own space teams
with astronauts, engineers, flight experts, and their
very own spaceships! They are spending millions of
dollars to make flying to space a reality for us.
Where does space begin?
Space or outer space are areas beyond the skies
where we experience weightlessness, and there is no
air to breathe. Space begins atthe Kármán line (100 km
above sea level). However, NASA considers above 80
kilometres as space.
Branson’s Virgin Spaceship Unity (VSS Unity)
Branson flew into space on his own spaceship VSS
Unityon July 11, 2021. He became the first billionaire to
flyto space, winning the race againstBezos. He flew 88
kilometres above Earth’s surface to see the bright blue
planet from space. The company even showed the live
recording of the whole flight!
VSS Unity consists of a carrier aeroplane (called
WhiteKnightTwo) and a rocket-powered spaceplane (called
SpaceShipTwo). WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo fly
together up to 15kms. Then SpaceShipTwo detaches
from WhiteKnightTwo. WhiteKnightTwo returns to the
Earth, and SpaceShipTwo goes upward using its rocket.
After reaching the desired height, it returns alone.
The entire flight took around 90 minutes. However, it
took Branson 17 years to make his dream come true. Now,
he wants to make itcome true for other people as well. He
wants people to be able to book their tickets and fly into
space. Virgin Galacticalreadyhas more than 600 bookings,
and each ticket costs around Rs 1,86,00,000!
Bezos’ Blue Origin
Just 9 days after Branson’s flight, Bezos was the
second billionaire to fly into space. He is the world’s
richest person and the founder of Amazon. He travelled
to space on the New Shepard rocket of his space
tourism company, Blue Origin. Their rocket carries the
crew capsule up to a heightand then returns. After that,
the crew capsule moves alone like a bulletand lands on
the Earth with the help of parachutes.
Musk’s SpaceX
Musk is the third billionaire who wants to not only
take people to space but also create a new home on
Mars! His space company SpaceX has already sent
astronauts from NASA to space. It is also building
spaceships to travel to the Moon and Mars.
Musk started SpaceX in 2002. It became the first
company to send a rocket into space with the help of
astronauts. Musk’s mission is to take humans to Mars
so thatwe can starta new life on a new planet. SpaceX’s
first space tourist flight is planned for September 2021.
How specialhave the space flights been?
This is not the first time a common man has travelled
to space. Before Branson, Dennis Tito had travelled to
space on May 9, 2001. He was technically the world’s
first space tourist. He paid 20 million dollars to the
Russian Space Agency to geta seaton their spaceship.
Sirisha Bandla also made history by becoming the
third Indian-origin person to travel to space after
Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams. She was one ofthe
engineers on Branson’s VSS Unity spaceship. Rakesh
Sharma is the first and the only Indian citizen who has
entered space. He had travelled to space in 1984.
How different are the three space flights?
Virgin Galactic Blue Origin SpaceX
Their reusable spaceflight system consists of a
carrier aeroplane and a spaceplane.
They use a reusable rocket and capsule
system called New Shepard.
They will use a reusable rocket to launch their
spaceships.
Branson took along with him astronauts and
engineers who operated the plane.
The flight was fully automatic. Musk is not planning to travel to space on the
first flight.
The VSS Unity reached an altitude of 88
kilometres.
New Shepard reached an altitude of
106 kilometres.
Musk’s spaceship will not only go to space but
will also go around the Earth and come back.
The whole trip from start to finish took 90 minutes. The whole trip took 10 minutes. The spaceship will stay in space for 3-4 days.

Frozen Tiny Worms
Come Back to Life
After 24,000 years
R
esearchers at the University of Illinois Chicago, USA,
have successfully used graphene to detect the COVID
virus. They combined graphene sheets with COVID
antibodies. Then, they put COVID-positive and COVID-negative
saliva samples on these sheets. When the sheet came in contact
with the COVID-positive sample, it started vibrating. But with a
COVID-negative sample, it didn’t move.
What are graphene sheets?
• Graphene is the
thinnest material
known to man. It is
as thick as one
carbon atom. It is
over 1,000 times
thinner than a
postage stamp!
• Graphene is also
about 100 times stronger than steel. The carbon atoms of
graphene are connected in a hexagonal structure, like in a
honeycomb.
• Graphene is the building block of graphite (used in pencil tips).
Graphene sheets with COVID antibodies?
An antibody is a protein that develops in the body. It helps to
fight bacteria and viruses. A different antibody is required to fight
each virus. An antibody that can fight the coronavirus is called the
COVID antibody. Scientists placed a layer of COVID antibodies
on top of graphene sheets.
How does it work?
When the saliva sample of a COVID infected person is put on
this specially created graphene sheet, the antibodies start reacting
with the coronavirus. Graphene is so thin that it gets ‘disturbed’
by the reaction between the antibodies and the virus. It starts
vibrating. These vibrations are so small that we cannot see them
with the naked eye. But a scientific device called the Raman
spectrometer can detect these vibrations.
Importance
Scientists are experimenting with new ways to detect the
COVID virus. Checking vibrations on a graphene sheet is a quick
option for a COVID test.

icroscopic animals called bdelloid rotifers have come back to life
after remaining frozen for 24,000 years. They are worm-like
microscopic organisms that were found under the ice near the
Alayeza River in Siberia, Russia. Once the ice melted, the worms came
alive as if they had woken up from a long sleep.
Scientists discovered the living worms locked inside the ice. They
collected the ice by drilling through the surface of the permafrost. Permafrost
or “permanent frost” is any ground that remains completely frozen for at
least two years straight. The temperature of permafrost can be anywhere
from 0 °C to -20 °C. These permanently frozen grounds are most common
near the North Pole and the South Pole.
Rotifers are the world’s most resilient creatures who can overcome any
form of extreme weather. They can be found all around us in places like wet
grass, rain puddles and ponds. This discovery proves that microscopic
animals can remain alive for thousands of years in a frozen state.
Their bodily functions may stop in the ice, but they return to normal once
the temperature increases. This is because they can protect their cells and
organs from harm at extremely low temperatures. This means that they are
also animals that may never die or go extinct on Earth.

ll the eight planets in our solar system
revolve around the Sun.Although they
are floating in space, their path around
the Sun is fixed. But are there any planets that
do not follow any rules?
NASA’s Kepler telescope has spotted four
mysterious ‘free-floating’ planets in deep
space. The planets are similar to Earth’s mass.
However, they are not a part of any solar system
or revolve around any sun or star.
What is a solar system?
• There are billions of planets in the universe.
Most of these
planets revolve
around their
nearest star. The
star and all
planets revolving
around that star
are collectively
called a solar
system. There are billions of solar systems in
the universe.
• But there are some planets that do not revolve
around a star. They are not part of any solar
system. They are known as rogue planets.
They are also called ‘free-floating planets’ or
‘starless planets’ or ‘sunless planets’.
How can planets freely float?
• A planet revolves around a star because the
star pulls and
holds the planet
in position with
an invisible force
called gravity.
Scientists believe
that over time,
some planets
become ‘heavy’.
When a planet is too heavy, the star may not
be able to pull it or hold it in place. This is
when the planet leaves the solar system and
starts floating by itself.
• Free-floating planets are proof that solar
systems may not be able to hold planets
forever.
T
he world’s oldest water has been
found by Canadian geologist Dr
Barbara Sherwood Lollar. She
discovered the water inside the Kidd Creek
mine in Canada. The point in the mine where she
took the water sample was 2.4 km below the
Earth’s surface. After a long study, it has been
found that the water is 1.6 billion years old.
How did she discover the water?
From 1992, Dr Barbara had been carrying out research at the Kidd
Creek mine. In 2019, when she and her team entered the mine, they smelt
a bad odour. When she entered further into the mine, she noticed it was
the water that smelt like a rotten egg. She collected a sample of water and
sent it to the laboratory.
What did scientists find in the water?
The lab reports mentioned that the water is 1.6 billion years old – much
older than dinosaurs and Mount Everest. Moreover, the water is ten times
saltier than seawater. What shocked the scientists was that the water
contained special bacteria in it. They wondered how the bacteria could
survive for such a long time deep inside a mine without sunlight.Apparently,
the bacteria had been feeding on hydrogen and sulphate for their survival.
What conclusion did scientists make?
Scientists believe that the presence of such old water with bacteria
indicates that the place was once an ocean bed. This belief is because
only ocean beds are known to support similar extreme life forms, as
sunlight does not reach deep inside the ocean.
Can this discovery help in the search for life on Mars?
The place on Earth where the water was found is 2.7 billion years old,
and Mars’ crust is also billions of years old. This place also looks very
similar to the surface of Mars. Scientists believe that if life-supporting
water can be found 2.4 km below the Earth, it may be possible that the
same could be true in the case of Mars.
Could similar old water exist in other
parts of the world?
Yes! Dr Barbara says South Africa and the rocky terrains of southern
India would be ideal locations to look for even older water.

The Kepler telescope was a space telescope launched in
2009 by NASA to discover Earth-sized planets orbiting other
stars. It is named after astronomer Johannes Kepler who
discovered the laws that describe the motion of planets around
the sun. A space telescope is a telescope that revolves around
the Earth like an artificial satellite, takes pictures of the universe
and sends these pictures to the ground station.
Though it was retired in 2018, scientists are still studying
pictures taken by it and making new discoveries.

anveer Singh, a Delhi-based artist, uses plastic
waste to create artwork. He has used 250 kg
of plastic in the last three years. So far, he has
sold three artworks produced from plastic waste – two
in Abu Dhabi and one in Germany.
By profession, Singh is an art teacher. He started his
eco-friendly project inApril 2018 and wants to contribute
to environmental conservation. His goal is to reduce the
dumping of plastic waste in landfills.
More than 60% of the total plastic waste produced is
dumped in landfills throughout the world. In fact, only
less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled. The harmful
chemicals in plastic wastes poison the environment.
They pollute the soil, air and underground water.
Singh wanted to do something for the nature through
his paintings. “Whenever I used to go out, the landscape
was loaded with plastic, and the river was even more
polluted. All I saw around me was plastic,” he said.
Therefore, he decided to use plastic as colours for his
paintings. He washed it and started making the artwork.

anesan Sandhirakasan from Tamil Nadu has won the ‘Singapore
4 Migrant Workers’ competition, organised by the Singapore
Government for migrant workers.
Ganesan submitted his video in which he performed the traditional
Indian martialart Silambam. He won the top prize after his video received
the highest number of likes and views.
Ganesan has been working in Singapore for the past seven years as a
fitness trainer who teaches Taekwondo. He started practising martial arts
at the age of 12. He won a silver medal for India at the first Silambam
World Championship in 2010.
Silambam is a traditional Indian martial art form from the 4th century
BC. Silambam is made up of two words, ‘silam’ (hill) and ‘bam’ (bamboo
stick or staff). So, it means ‘a staff from the hills’. Staff is the main
weapon used in Silambam, although it includes a variety of weapons.
An amazing feature of Silambam is the intricate movements performed
using the weapons. Hence, this art requires flexibility, speed, hand-eye
coordination, balance and strength. It promotes both physical and mental
health and is practised by both men and women.
The most important part of Silambam is the footwork. Learners need
to maintain a proper fighting position and move the sticks in various ways.
Ganesan recorded and submitted his performance of Silambam to the
competition. The pandemic forced his Taekwondo classes to close down.
He is happy to win the first migrant workers’ competition. He hopes to
promote the art so that it is not forgotten.

cientists in China have discovered a giant human
skull that is 140,000 years old. The Chinese
researchers think this is a new human species. They
have named it Homo longi. The species is being referred to as
‘Dragon man’ because it was found in the ‘Black Dragon
River’ region in China.
How is Homo longi different from
other human species?
Homo longi contains a mix of early and modern human
features. Scientists believe that this species forms the link
between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.
• Neanderthals were hunter-gatherers who lived in caves,
made stone tools, and travelled for food. Conversely,
Homo sapiens led a settled life, producing food through
agriculture and domestication of animals. They were the
‘modern humans’, our ancestors.

old miners in Canada have discovered the
skeletons of three giant woolly mammoths.
The miners found the partial skeletons of
different mammoths in the same place. This could mean
that they were part of a family.
Researchers think the mammoths died around 29,000
years ago. They will now study the skeletons and try to
find out how they died and whether they were a family.
Woolly Mammoths Were
Majestic Creatures
If you have watched the movie Ice Age, you probably
already know what woolly mammoths look like. They
were large elephant-like animals that lived during the Ice
Age.
They were called “woolly” because they had thick
layers of wool on their body. These helped them live in
low temperatures during the Ice Age.
They were mostly found in North America and Central
Europe. They went extinct around 10,000 years ago.
Scientistsdonotknowthereasonbehindtheirextinction.
But they believe hunting by humans or hot temperatures
to be possible reasons.
The closest living relative of the woolly mammoth is
the modern Asian elephant. Though the main difference
between the two is that Asian elephants do not have a
thick coat of wool on their body.

Ice Age
An ice age is a long period of low temperatures on the
Earth’s surface. During an ice age, everything gets covered
by ice sheets, and most of the water on earth freezes.
There have been at least five major ice ages in Earth’s
history. The last ice age ended around 13,000 years ago.
After that, the ice slowly melted when the temperature of
the planet increased.
• However, these two species lived several thousands of
years apart. Thus, so far, researchers did not know
whether Home sapiens came immediately after the
Neanderthals or not.
The skull discovered in China is closer to modern humans,
but it also contains some Neanderthal elements.
The skull is massive in size, just like the Neanderthals.
However, the size of the brain is smaller, which is more like
modern humans. The eyebrows are curved like modern
humans, but they are large like Neanderthals.
Possibly, this could be a new type of human different from
all the other human species? Only time will tell.

eing happy in any situation depends heavily on
the energy that we get from others. Here, energy
refers to the positive or negative remarks we
receive from people. People’s behaviour towards us can
often affect us mentally. However, have we ever thought
about the results of our actions? Maybe we need to get rid
of the three evil C’s from our minds so that we become
more positive.
What are the three evilC’s?
The three evil C’s are complain, compare and criticise. If
we are always focused on these three actions, our thoughts
become negative. They affect us in the following ways:
• In our everyday life, we become more competitive with
our friends, peers, relatives and classmates.
• We tend to complain about our situation instead of
trying to find solutions.
• Criticising people on their actions is easier than trying to
support them.
These three ‘evil’ actions can affect our friendships,
mental health and focus and put more pressure on us.
What is complaining?
Complaining refers to showing dissatisfaction about
something. At times, we choose to complain more because
we get annoyed by everything. Everything might not
always go the right way. Tough situations are instances in
which we are tested.
Will you choose to complain because something is not
according to your liking? Or will you choose to adjust to it,
try to make it better and find a solution?
A constant complainer will choose the first option. They
always seem to look at the negatives instead of the
positives.
What is comparing?
Comparing is the act of measuring or noting down the
similarities or differences between two or more things.
Constant comparisons have been made between cousins,
classmates, academic performances, achievements in
extracurricular activities and the like.
Sometimes, comparing does help us. When we see
someone happier and more successful than us, we try to
achieve the same. We try to double our efforts.
However, more often than not, comparing ourselves
with another person is trying to get what they have. We
want to do what they do, so we try to do those things their
way. We might think if our friend is good at painting, we
also must be. If our cousin is good at singing, we have to
be a good singer too. Unfortunately, this stops us from
doing what we are good at.
If we constantly compare our everyday life with that of
others, we won’t be able to do the things we like. It is

Getting rid of the three evil C’s:
Complain, compare and criticise
better to pursue our own talents and interests instead of
comparing our skills with those of others.
What is criticising?
The evilest ‘C’ is criticising. It is about finding faults in
others and disapproving of everything they do. Sometimes,
if we can’t achieve what another person has achieved, we
try to bring them down by saying negative things to or
about them.
For example, when your friend has scored more than
you did on a history test because he studied hard for
weeks, you should congratulate him for his hard work.
However, many of us would choose to criticise him by
saying, ‘You just got lucky this time!’ or ‘This was an easy
test; that’s why you scored more’. This can demotivate
your friend.
Similarly, your friend may have started attending
dancing classes. She may not be good at it, but she is still
trying. This is when you should support her decision
instead of criticising her dancing. Finding faults will bring
negativity into the friendship.
How to get rid of the three evilC’s?
Hanging on to the three evil C’s makes us a negative
person. Our goal should be to spread positivity through
everything we do.
• Instead of complaining, we can try to look at the
positive side of things. Having a ‘yes, I can do it’
attitude is better than having a ‘no, this is too tough’
attitude.
• A healthy comparison is a good thing. It motivates us
because we try to achieve what others have. However,
we should work hard and think about the things that
make us happy. Constant comparison can lead to
unnecessary pressure and unhappiness.
• Criticising should be completely avoided. We should be
more supportive of our friends and family instead of
demotivating them. Not only should we try to give our
best but also be happy when other people do their best.

he Prime Minister (PM) leads our country. To run
the country smoothly, the PM needs a group of
persons to advise him on different issues and
manage some departments or ministries. These persons
are known as Ministers, and the group is known as the
Council of Ministers. The Prime Minister, together with
the Council of Ministers, forms the Government.
Recently,therewasachangeintheCouncilofMinisters.

ministry than what they were previously handling. Here
are some of the notable changes:
Cabinet Reshuffle: New Ministers, New Hopes!
Why have ministers resigned, and
what prompted this change?
As per the constitution of India, a Minister can remain in office as
longasthePresidentlikes.Thisiscalled“PleasureofthePresident”.
However, the President can also remove a Minister at any time,
without notice and without giving any cause of removal. A Minister
can also resign on their own at any time.
However, in practice, the Prime Minister decides who will
become a Minister. So, whenever the PM feels that there is a need
to change the ministers, he advises them to resign. The Prime
Minister normally does this to improve the efficiency of the
government. So, let’s hope to see better governance in the future.

constitution. It will replace the 40-year-old Pinochet
Constitution.
What is the Pinochet Constitution?
In 1973, Augusto Pinochet was appointed as Chief of the
Chilean Army by President Salvador Allende. But, Pinochet
betrayed President Salvador after 18 days with America’s
help. Using the Army, he started a military oligarchy in Chile
with his constitution. But people in Chile have always wanted
a democratic government.

So, in October 2020, over 78% of Chilean citizens voted
to change the constitution. They elected 155 members in May
2021 to form a constituentassembly. The assembly will now
debate and write the new constitution. This will be the first
constituent assembly in the world where an equal number of
men and women will be present.
Major Points of the New Constitution
The new members will work on writing the new constitution
in the next few months. Their primary focus will be as follows:
• Giving equal rights to women
• Removing the current pension system that forces people
to give their retirement savings to private companies
• Good public health and education
• Giving equal rights to minority groups

in 1994 when he was just 10 years old.
When Simons was asked what he wants to do
in the future, he said, “Immortality, that is my
goal.” In the interview, he went on to say, “Not for
myself, but for other people, by replacing as many
body parts as possible with mechanical parts.” He
wants to put mechanical body parts inside humans

Anthropology
Anthropology is
the study of how
people live now and
how they may have
lived in the past.
Anthropology is
different from history.
In history, the main focus is on studying events,
kings, queens, buildings, and so on. In
anthropology, the main focus is on studying the
way in which humans lived, how they behaved
with each other, what customs they followed and
how their bodies changed over time; these are
compared with the customs and practises of
present-day humans.
Quantum Physics
Physics helps us
understand everything
from moving cars to the
movement of planets. But
the things that are very,
very small, like atoms,
electrons and protons, do not move like cars and
planets. They move differently. The study of these
very small objects is called Quantum Physics.

It is very difficult to become a
grandmaster. There are two main
standards for becoming a
grandmaster. First, the player’s FIDE
rating/score must be at least 2500.
Chess players get a score/rating
from FIDE every time they win
tournaments or win against other
Grandmasters. Second, the player

n underwater robot has filmed
a magical glass octopus
swimming in the depths of the
Pacific Ocean. It is an octopus with a
nearly transparent body. This means
that the entire body of the glass
octopus is ‘see-through’. The only
visible organs are its glowing eyes, the
nervous system and intestines.
Glass octopuses were initially
discovered in 1918. Very little is known
about this species, as they are hard to
see, especially in the dark waters. They
are mostly found in deep seas,
approximately around 200 metres to 3
kilometres deep.
Glass octopuses use their
transparent body as part of their
‘camouflage strategy.’ They try to
hide themselves from predatory
animals such as sharks and big fish. In
the deep ocean, there is very little light.
Hence, having a transparent body
makes it easier for the glass octopus to
appear completely invisible.
The underwater robot was part of a
marine life expedition that was
searching for sea creatures hiding in the
deep waters. The team surveyed
30,000 square kilometres of the
Central Pacific Ocean and found new
sea creatures. They also filmed a whale
shark (the largest living fish in the
world) and a long-legged crab while it
was stealing a fish from another crab.
There are numerous wonders in
oceans that are yet to be discovered.
Expeditions such as these teach us the
necessity of understanding marine
ecosystems so that we can save the
lesser-known creatures of the deep
oceans.

Indian Scientists
Discover a New Plant
Species in Antarctica
I
ndia set up its first research station in Antarctica in
1984. For the first time in 40 years, Indian scientists
have discovered a new plant species in Antarctica.
This plant species is a kind of moss. It has been named
Bryum bharatiensis as it was found near the Indian Antarctic
station called Bharati.
What are mosses?
Mosses are flowerless, ancient plants. They appeared on
Earth around 450 million years ago and are still found
everywhere. They have stems and leaves, but don’t have
roots. Instead, they have rhizoids, which are small hairlike
structures. Rhizoids help plants in sticking to soil, and
absorbing water and nutrients. Like other plants, they
prepare their food through photosynthesis.
How did the moss survive in Antarctica?
Antarctica has a six months winter season, and during this
time, it remains fully black without sunlight. The whole of
Antarctica gets covered with thick snow. Moreover, the
temperature gets as low as -76 °C. Therefore, it is very
difficult for a plant to survive in this environment.
Plant Habitat
Class VII
The scientists found that this moss mainly grew in areas
where penguins were present in large numbers. Penguin’s
dung has nitrogen. The dung might have worked as manure
for the moss. But during winters (in the absence of sunlight),
the moss goes to a dormant stage. In this stage, it stops its
body activity and remains inactive as a seed. When the snow
melts in the summer, the moss comes back to life, soaking
up the water.
Why are scientists worried?
It’s climate change that is turning Antarctica green with
plants, and the presence of moss is the proof! In Antarctica,
scientists observed many melting glaciers. They also noticed
other species of plants that earlier could not survive in
Antarctica’s environment are now seen everywhere because
of the warming up of the continent.

Dormant Not active for some time
Manure Animal dung used for fertilising land
Photosynthesis The process by which plants use

ccording to a new study, changing
the levels of different fatty acids
in our diet can decrease
headaches. Researchers at the University
of North Carolina, USA, asked patients
with headaches to change their diets. They
were asked to stop eating foods that had
bad fatty acids and instead eat food with
‘good’fats called Omega-3.This decreased
their headaches in 3–4 months.
What are good and bad
fatty acids?
Not all kinds of fats are bad for our
health. Fat is a type of nutrient, and just
like protein and carbohydrates, your body
needs fat for producing energy. A balanced
diet should include ‘good’ fatty acids that
have many benefits:
• They help lower blood pressure.
• They maintain a normal heart rate.
A
new study has found that children who eat slower
tend to be less impulsive. Being impulsive means
doing things suddenly without proper thinking or
planning.
Researchers wanted to study the link between children’s
moods and eating habits. They found that children who are
slow eaters can focus more on enjoying the food, while those
who eat faster can get easily irritated and angry. Sometimes
due to anger, they start eating more. This can even lead to
childhood obesity.
So, the researchers found a clear link between mood and

food. The big question is: does our mood depend on what we
eat, or does the food affect our mood?
• The researchers found that eating habits among children
mainly depend on food signals such as its appearance,
smell, and taste.
• The speed at which children eat depends on these signals.
If they feel frustrated or uncomfortable, they tend to eat
more and faster.
• Children who are unable to control their negative emotions
become moody. They have less self-control when it comes
to eating.

Whatis your go-to food or dish when you are feeling
sad? Does eating the dish make you feel better?
Power Words
Frustrated Feeling annoyed
Obesity The disease that results from being
overweight
• Sometimes, parents use food to calm down their children.
This creates a connection between one’s mood and eating
habits.
So, could the habit of eating slower make children less
impulsive? Or, is it that less impulsive kids have more self-
control when it comes to eating? Only future research will help
us answer this question.
Controlling Fatty
Acids in Diet can
Prevent Headaches
• They help protect your heart and brain.
Some of the best sources of good fats
are olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish.
On the other hand, consuming too much
‘bad’ fats makes you unhealthy. It leads to
weight gain, cholesterol problems, high
blood pressure, and an increased risk of
heart attacks.
Bad fatty acids are mostly found in junk
food, chips, chocolate, and ready-to-eat
meals. Most people are consuming a high
amount of junk food nowadays, so our
body mostly gets bad fats instead of good
fatty acids.
The new research proves that having a
controlled diet with more good fats is good
for our health. Therefore, our goal should be
to use the goodness of healthy fats.

fuel because it does not emit soot, dust or
fumes and generates 30% less carbon

about -162 °C, it becomes liquid. Then it is
called Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). It is easy

A huge explosion shook the Caspian Sea
area, where Azerbaijan has many offshore
oil and gas fields. Large flames were seen
lighting up the sky. SOCAR, an oil company
in Azerbaijan, said that the explosion
occurred due to a mud volcano. Mud
volcanoes aren’t like typical volcanoes that
throw out molten rock or magma from the
inside of the Earth. It is basically a release
of underground flammable gases that come
out to the surface. These gases mix with
water and mineral rocks and create a muddy
slurry. The Caspian Sea has seen many
mud volcanoes because it is rich in oil and
gas fields.

Parts of southern Australia recently saw
heavy rains and floods. People noticed an
amazing thing afterwards – they saw
blankets of spider webs covering trees, road

their webs during rains and floods?
Experts say that this is a result of
“ballooning”, a technique used by
some spiders and insects to run from
dangerous places quickly. While fleeing,
they start throwing a very lightweight silk
thread. The thread is so light that it flies in
the air like a balloon. The spider hangs to
this flying thread and reaches safer places.
Millions of spiders do this at the same time
during floods. It looks like a massive web
when these threads accumulate on the
ground.

A
new global study has ranked India 8th in the top 10 countries
having AI-based companies and products. This is an impressive
achievement for India because it has managed to become one of
the leaders in AI in a matter of five years. More than 94% of the new
AI-based companies in India were started in the last five years and most
of them are related to electronics, personal computers and health care.
What is AI?
Artificial intelligence or AI is the
technology that uses computers to
do things that traditionally require
human intelligence, for example,
creating a robot that can teach in a
class and answer all the questions
asked by students.
Applications of AI
AI is currently used in many areas. We have driverless cars. We have
intelligent robots like Sophia that can talk to anyone like a person would.
We also have Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa that can carry out
orders from us, for instance, to switch on the lights or play music. Further,
AI-based chess software can even defeat world champions in minutes.
Future of AI
In the future, AI will have many
more applications. Many of the
current jobs done by humans will
eventually be done by AI-based
computers. For example, a
computer may perform the role of a
doctororlawyerinfuture.Therefore,
the demand for AI specialists is expected to increase in the future.
Background Information
Sophia
Sophia is a human-like robot that
was developed by the Hong Kong-
based company Hanson Robotics. The
robot has been designed to learn and
adapt to human behaviour and work
with humans. Sophia talks like humans
and has been invited and interviewed
worldwide. In October 2017, Sophia
became a citizen of Saudi Arabia. This
means Sophia is the first robot to receive
citizenship of a country.

has ordered an investigation into Google’s
smart TV software business. Smart TVs
are becoming more popular every day. People can
now download apps on their TV just like they do on
their phones. Most of the smart TV manufacturers
use the Android operating system. They also want
to utilise the Google Play Store app with which the
user can install other apps.
However, there has been a complaint that Google
has made it compulsory for the smart TV
manufacturers to ‘pre-install’ all the apps that
Google wanted if they want to use the Google Play
Store app on their TVs. Google is also imposing
another condition that TV manufacturers cannot use
any other operating system or any other version of
Android than what Google recommends.
The CCI thinks that these measures are unfair.
Google Play Store is crucial for smart TVs, and
Google should not impose unreasonable conditions
to install it. The CCI felt at first glance that the
conditions set out by Google violate the Indian
Competition Law. Hence, the CCI has ordered a
thorough investigation regarding the complaint.
Once the report is prepared, the CCI will then issue
the final order.

Chakraborty has said
that the Reserve Bank of
India (RBI) should not print extra
money to tackle India’s fiscal
deficit. This may lead to the
wastage of money, and it is not a
solution for the economic issue.
What is the financial
issue in India presently?
The pandemic has affected India’s economy in many ways.
People have lost their jobs, employees have been facing pay
cuts, and it is tough to find new jobs. Many people are having
a hard time.
• Many people think the solution to bring back India’s
economic situation to ‘normal’ is to print more money. The
RBI is the organisation that prints money. If it just prints
more money, we can use it for emergency funding.
Sounds simple!
• However, many economists believe that this is not a long-
term solution. Chakraborty said that printing more money
can make the country feel more secure for now. But, once
there’s more money to use, people might start spending it
on unnecessary things. If we print more money, it just
means that we are printing money rather than doing any
business.

apan’s government has announced plans to start a
four-day workweek in all offices. They will ask
employers to change the current five-day
workweek. Japan’s Prime Minister believes that this will bring
work-life balance and reduce work stress.
Japanese workers are known to be overworked. They even
have a word for it: ‘karoshi’, which means death from
overwork.
How can the four-day work week help?
• Getting time to take care of the family
• Learning new skills and hobbies
• Giving an equal amount of time to family and work
• Increasing educational qualifications
The main idea is to improve work productivity. Working
continuously for five days and getting only a two-day break
may not be enough to get some rest. When employees come
back to the office on Monday, they might not be able to
concentrate on work.
Some reasons might be pending work, not enough rest,
extra work, etc. An extra day off in the middle of the week
might be helpful.

Can India follow a four-day workweek?
The government has been discussing the same policy for
India. But one of the main challenges in India is the
unorganised sector.
More than 80% of Indian workers do not have fixed
timings, fixed holidays or contracts. Most people are paid
based on how much they work. In addition, the guidelines are
not organised. Starting a four-day workweek in India will need
more discussion.

Humans have always been fascinated by space travel. Now, that dream has become a reality, thanks to three billionaires – Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk. All three of them are creating their own space teams with astronauts, engineers, flight experts, and their very own spaceships! They are spending millions of dollars to make flying to space a reality for us. Where does space begin? Space or outer space are areas beyond the skies where we experience weightlessness, and there is no air to breathe. Space begins atthe Kármán line (100 km above sea level). However, NASA considers above 80 kilometres as space. Branson’s Virgin Spaceship Unity (VSS Unity) Branson flew into space on his own spaceship VSS Unityon July 11, 2021. He became the first billionaire to flyto space, winning the race againstBezos. He flew 88 kilometres above Earth’s surface to see the bright blue planet from space. The company even showed the live recording of the whole flight! VSS Unity consists of a carrier aeroplane (called WhiteKnightTwo) and a rocket-powered spaceplane (called SpaceShipTwo). WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo fly together up to 15kms. Then SpaceShipTwo detaches from WhiteKnightTwo. WhiteKnightTwo returns to the Earth, and SpaceShipTwo goes upward using its rocket. After reaching the desired height, it returns alone. The entire flight took around 90 minutes. However, it took Branson 17 years to make his dream come true. Now, he wants to make itcome true for other people as well. He wants people to be able to book their tickets and fly into space. Virgin Galacticalreadyhas more than 600 bookings, and each ticket costs around Rs 1,86,00,000! Bezos’ Blue Origin Just 9 days after Branson’s flight, Bezos was the second billionaire to fly into space. He is the world’s richest person and the founder of Amazon. He travelled to space on the New Shepard rocket of his space tourism company, Blue Origin. Their rocket carries the crew capsule up to a heightand then returns. After that, the crew capsule moves alone like a bulletand lands on the Earth with the help of parachutes. Musk’s SpaceX Musk is the third billionaire who wants to not only take people to space but also create a new home on Mars! His space company SpaceX has already sent astronauts from NASA to space. It is also building spaceships to travel to the Moon and Mars. Musk started SpaceX in 2002. It became the first company to send a rocket into space with the help of astronauts. Musk’s mission is to take humans to Mars so thatwe can starta new life on a new planet. SpaceX’s first space tourist flight is planned for September 2021. How specialhave the space flights been? This is not the first time a common man has travelled to space. Before Branson, Dennis Tito had travelled to space on May 9, 2001. He was technically the world’s first space tourist. He paid 20 million dollars to the Russian Space Agency to geta seaton their spaceship. Sirisha Bandla also made history by becoming the third Indian-origin person to travel to space after Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams. She was one ofthe engineers on Branson’s VSS Unity spaceship. Rakesh Sharma is the first and the only Indian citizen who has entered space. He had travelled to space in 1984. How different are the three space flights?  Virgin Galactic Blue Origin SpaceX Their reusable spaceflight system consists of a carrier aeroplane and a spaceplane. They use a reusable rocket and capsule system called New Shepard. They will use a reusable rocket to launch their spaceships. Branson took along with him astronauts and engineers who operated the plane. The flight was fully automatic. Musk is not planning to travel to space on the first flight. The VSS Unity reached an altitude of 88 kilometres. New Shepard reached an altitude of 106 kilometres. Musk’s spaceship will not only go to space but will also go around the Earth and come back. StudentEdge • August 2021 03 Science www.studentedge.in Frozen Tiny Worms Come Back to Life After 24,000 years R esearchers at the University of Illinois Chicago, USA, have successfully used graphene to detect the COVID virus. They combined graphene sheets with COVID antibodies. Then, they put COVID-positive and COVID-negative saliva samples on these sheets. When the sheet came in contact with the COVID-positive sample, it started vibrating. But with a COVID-negative sample, it didn’t move. What are graphene sheets? • Graphene is the thinnest material known to man. It is as thick as one carbon atom. It is over 1,000 times thinner than a postage stamp! • Graphene is also about 100 times stronger than steel. The carbon atoms of graphene are connected in a hexagonal structure, like in a honeycomb. • Graphene is the building block of graphite (used in pencil tips). Graphene sheets with COVID antibodies? An antibody is a protein that develops in the body. It helps to fight bacteria and viruses. A different antibody is required to fight each virus. An antibody that can fight the coronavirus is called the COVID antibody. Scientists placed a layer of COVID antibodies on top of graphene sheets. How does it work? When the saliva sample of a COVID infected person is put on this specially created graphene sheet, the antibodies start reacting with the coronavirus. Graphene is so thin that it gets ‘disturbed’ by the reaction between the antibodies and the virus. It starts vibrating. These vibrations are so small that we cannot see them with the naked eye. But a scientific device called the Raman spectrometer can detect these vibrations. Importance Scientists are experimenting with new ways to detect the COVID virus. Checking vibrations on a graphene sheet is a quick option for a COVID test. ‘Graphene’, the Thinnest Material in the World, Can Detect COVID M icroscopic animals called bdelloid rotifers have come back to life after remaining frozen for 24,000 years. They are worm-like microscopic organisms that were found under the ice near the Alayeza River in Siberia, Russia. Once the ice melted, the worms came alive as if they had woken up from a long sleep. Scientists discovered the living worms locked inside the ice. They collected the ice by drilling through the surface of the permafrost. Permafrost or “permanent frost” is any ground that remains completely frozen for at least two years straight. The temperature of permafrost can be anywhere from 0 °C to -20 °C. These permanently frozen grounds are most common near the North Pole and the South Pole. Rotifers are the world’s most resilient creatures who can overcome any form of extreme weather. They can be found all around us in places like wet grass, rain puddles and ponds. This discovery proves that microscopic animals can remain alive for thousands of years in a frozen state. Their bodily functions may stop in the ice, but they return to normal once the temperature increases. This is because they can protect their cells and organs from harm at extremely low temperatures. This means that they are also animals that may never die or go extinct on Earth. Worksheet : SC020 In what ways can this discovery help us, humans? But are there any planets that do not follow any rules? NASA’s Kepler telescope has spotted four mysterious ‘free-floating’ planets in deep space. The planets are similar to Earth’s mass. However, they are not a part of any solar system or revolve around any sun or star. What is a solar system? • There are billions of planets in the universe. Most of these planets revolve around their nearest star. The star and all planets revolving around that star are collectively called a solar system. There are billions of solar systems in the universe. • But there are some planets that do not revolve around a star. They are not part of any solar system. They are known as rogue planets. They are also called ‘free-floating planets’ or ‘starless planets’ or ‘sunless planets’. How can planets freely float? • A planet revolves around a star because the star pulls and holds the planet in position with an invisible force called gravity. Scientists believe that over time, some planets become ‘heavy’. When a planet is too heavy, the star may not be able to pull it or hold it in place. This is when the planet leaves the solar system and starts floating by itself. • Free-floating planets are proof that solar systems may not be able to hold planets forever. T he world’s oldest water has been found by Canadian geologist Dr Barbara Sherwood Lollar. She discovered the water inside the Kidd Creek mine in Canada. The point in the mine where she took the water sample was 2.4 km below the Earth’s surface. After a long study, it has been found that the water is 1.6 billion years old. How did she discover the water? From 1992, Dr Barbara had been carrying out research at the Kidd Creek mine. In 2019, when she and her team entered the mine, they smelt a bad odour. When she entered further into the mine, she noticed it was the water that smelt like a rotten egg. She collected a sample of water and sent it to the laboratory. What did scientists find in the water? The lab reports mentioned that the water is 1.6 billion years old – much older than dinosaurs and Mount Everest. Moreover, the water is ten times saltier than seawater. What shocked the scientists was that the water contained special bacteria in it. They wondered how the bacteria could survive for such a long time deep inside a mine without sunlight.Apparently, the bacteria had been feeding on hydrogen and sulphate for their survival. What conclusion did scientists make? Scientists believe that the presence of such old water with bacteria indicates that the place was once an ocean bed. This belief is because only ocean beds are known to support similar extreme life forms, as sunlight does not reach deep inside the ocean. Can this discovery help in the search for life on Mars? The place on Earth where the water was found is 2.7 billion years old, and Mars’ crust is also billions of years old. This place also looks very similar to the surface of Mars. Scientists believe that if life-supporting water can be found 2.4 km below the Earth, it may be possible that the same could be true in the case of Mars. Could similar old water exist in other parts of the world? Yes! Dr Barbara says South Africa and the rocky terrains of southern India would be ideal locations to look for even older water. He has used 250 kg of plastic in the last three years. So far, he has sold three artworks produced from plastic waste – two in Abu Dhabi and one in Germany. By profession, Singh is an art teacher. He started his eco-friendly project inApril 2018 and wants to contribute to environmental conservation. His goal is to reduce the dumping of plastic waste in landfills. More than 60% of the total plastic waste produced is dumped in landfills throughout the world. In fact, only less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled. The harmful chemicals in plastic wastes poison the environment. They pollute the soil, air and underground water. Singh wanted to do something for the nature through his paintings. “Whenever I used to go out, the landscape was loaded with plastic, and the river was even more polluted. All I saw around me was plastic,” he said. Therefore, he decided to use plastic as colours for his paintings. He washed it and started making the artwork. Ganesan submitted his video in which he performed the traditional Indian martialart Silambam. He won the top prize after his video received the highest number of likes and views. Ganesan has been working in Singapore for the past seven years as a fitness trainer who teaches Taekwondo. He started practising martial arts at the age of 12. He won a silver medal for India at the first Silambam World Championship in 2010. Silambam is a traditional Indian martial art form from the 4th century BC. Silambam is made up of two words, ‘silam’ (hill) and ‘bam’ (bamboo stick or staff). So, it means ‘a staff from the hills’. Staff is the main weapon used in Silambam, although it includes a variety of weapons. An amazing feature of Silambam is the intricate movements performed using the weapons. Hence, this art requires flexibility, speed, hand-eye coordination, balance and strength. It promotes both physical and mental health and is practised by both men and women. The most important part of Silambam is the footwork. Learners need to maintain a proper fighting position and move the sticks in various ways. Ganesan recorded and submitted his performance of Silambam to the competition. The pandemic forced his Taekwondo classes to close down. He is happy to win the first migrant workers’ competition. • 6. 06 HISTORY StudentEdge • August 2021 www.studentedge.in S cientists in China have discovered a giant human skull that is 140,000 years old. The Chinese researchers think this is a new human species. They have named it Homo longi. The species is being referred to as ‘Dragon man’ because it was found in the ‘Black Dragon River’ region in China. How is Homo longi different from other human species? Homo longi contains a mix of early and modern human features. Scientists believe that this species forms the link between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. • Neanderthals were hunter-gatherers who lived in caves, made stone tools, and travelled for food. Conversely, Homo sapiens led a settled life, producing food through agriculture and domestication of animals. They were the ‘modern humans’, our ancestors. ‘Dragon Man’: New Species of Ancient Humans Found in China Gold Miners Discover Woolly Mammoths G old miners in Canada have discovered the skeletons of three giant woolly mammoths. The miners found the partial skeletons of different mammoths in the same place. This could mean that they were part of a family. Researchers think the mammoths died around 29,000 years ago. They will now study the skeletons and try to find out how they died and whether they were a family. Woolly Mammoths Were Majestic Creatures If you have watched the movie Ice Age, you probably already know what woolly mammoths look like. They were large elephant-like animals that lived during the Ice Age. They were called “woolly” because they had thick layers of wool on their body. These helped them live in low temperatures during the Ice Age. They were mostly found in North America and Central Europe. They went extinct around 10,000 years ago. Scientistsdonotknowthereasonbehindtheirextinction. But they believe hunting by humans or hot temperatures to be possible reasons. The closest living relative of the woolly mammoth is the modern Asian elephant. Though the main difference between the two is that Asian elephants do not have a thick coat of wool on their body. During an ice age, everything gets covered by ice sheets, and most of the water on earth freezes. There have been at least five major ice ages in Earth’s history. The last ice age ended around 13,000 years ago. After that, the ice slowly melted when the temperature of the planet increased. • However, these two species lived several thousands of years apart. Thus, so far, researchers did not know whether Home sapiens came immediately after the Neanderthals or not. The skull discovered in China is closer to modern humans, but it also contains some Neanderthal elements. The skull is massive in size, just like the Neanderthals. However, the size of the brain is smaller, which is more like modern humans. The eyebrows are curved like modern humans, but they are large like Neanderthals. Possibly, this could be a new type of human different from all the other human species? Only time will tell. Heredity and Evolution Class X
  • 7. 07 Moral Education StudentEdge • August 2021 www.studentedge.in B eing happy in any situation depends heavily on the energy that we get from others. Here, energy refers to the positive or negative remarks we receive from people. People’s behaviour towards us can often affect us mentally. However, have we ever thought about the results of our actions? Maybe we need to get rid of the three evil C’s from our minds so that we become more positive. What are the three evilC’s? The three evil C’s are complain, compare and criticise. If we are always focused on these three actions, our thoughts become negative. They affect us in the following ways: • In our everyday life, we become more competitive with our friends, peers, relatives and classmates. • We tend to complain about our situation instead of trying to find solutions. • Criticising people on their actions is easier than trying to support them. These three ‘evil’ actions can affect our friendships, mental health and focus and put more pressure on us. What is complaining? Complaining refers to showing dissatisfaction about something. At times, we choose to complain more because we get annoyed by everything. Everything might not always go the right way. Tough situations are instances in which we are tested. Will you choose to complain because something is not according to your liking? Or will you choose to adjust to it, try to make it better and find a solution? A constant complainer will choose the first option. They always seem to look at the negatives instead of the positives. What is comparing? Comparing is the act of measuring or noting down the similarities or differences between two or more things. Constant comparisons have been made between cousins, classmates, academic performances, achievements in extracurricular activities and the like. Sometimes, comparing does help us. When we see someone happier and more successful than us, we try to achieve the same. We try to double our efforts. However, more often than not, comparing ourselves with another person is trying to get what they have. We want to do what they do, so we try to do those things their way. We might think if our friend is good at painting, we also must be. If our cousin is good at singing, we have to be a good singer too. Unfortunately, this stops us from doing what we are good at. If we constantly compare our everyday life with that of others, we won’t be able to do the things we like. It is B W D R O Q A O K Y F E M E N E R G Y I O R T N R O Z U F F N Q L O S C F B T Z Z D X U S T V O N L Q I N L F I W C C U J U H E V R A W G I S R R E S H E A Y N E V F A G S V E O D T U T C J G M M H A G N U E B X X E E C F L R P C M J N T X X V G W H B G Y Q E A A X Y Y L U F K N A H T W Getting rid of the three evil C’s: Complain, compare and criticise better to pursue our own talents and interests instead of comparing our skills with those of others. What is criticising? The evilest ‘C’ is criticising. It is about finding faults in others and disapproving of everything they do. Sometimes, if we can’t achieve what another person has achieved, we try to bring them down by saying negative things to or about them. For example, when your friend has scored more than you did on a history test because he studied hard for weeks, you should congratulate him for his hard work. However, many of us would choose to criticise him by saying, ‘You just got lucky this time!’ or ‘This was an easy test; that’s why you scored more’. This can demotivate your friend. Similarly, your friend may have started attending dancing classes. She may not be good at it, but she is still trying. This is when you should support her decision instead of criticising her dancing. Finding faults will bring negativity into the friendship. How to get rid of the three evilC’s? Hanging on to the three evil C’s makes us a negative person. Our goal should be to spread positivity through everything we do. • Instead of complaining, we can try to look at the positive side of things. Having a ‘yes, I can do it’ attitude is better than having a ‘no, this is too tough’ attitude. • A healthy comparison is a good thing. It motivates us because we try to achieve what others have. However, we should work hard and think about the things that make us happy. Constant comparison can lead to unnecessary pressure and unhappiness. • Criticising should be completely avoided. We should be more supportive of our friends and family instead of demotivating them. Not only should we try to give our best but also be happy when other people do their best. • 10. 10 Environment StudentEdge • August 2021 www.studentedge.in A n underwater robot has filmed a magical glass octopus swimming in the depths of the Pacific Ocean. It is an octopus with a nearly transparent body. This means that the entire body of the glass octopus is ‘see-through’. The only visible organs are its glowing eyes, the nervous system and intestines. Glass octopuses were initially discovered in 1918. Very little is known about this species, as they are hard to see, especially in the dark waters. They are mostly found in deep seas, approximately around 200 metres to 3 kilometres deep. Glass octopuses use their transparent body as part of their ‘camouflage strategy.’ They try to hide themselves from predatory animals such as sharks and big fish. In the deep ocean, there is very little light. Hence, having a transparent body makes it easier for the glass octopus to appear completely invisible. The underwater robot was part of a marine life expedition that was searching for sea creatures hiding in the deep waters. The team surveyed 30,000 square kilometres of the Central Pacific Ocean and found new sea creatures. They also filmed a whale shark (the largest living fish in the world) and a long-legged crab while it was stealing a fish from another crab. There are numerous wonders in oceans that are yet to be discovered. Expeditions such as these teach us the necessity of understanding marine ecosystems so that we can save the lesser-known creatures of the deep oceans. Indian Scientists Discover a New Plant Species in Antarctica I ndia set up its first research station in Antarctica in 1984. For the first time in 40 years, Indian scientists have discovered a new plant species in Antarctica. This plant species is a kind of moss. It has been named Bryum bharatiensis as it was found near the Indian Antarctic station called Bharati. What are mosses? Mosses are flowerless, ancient plants. They appeared on Earth around 450 million years ago and are still found everywhere. They have stems and leaves, but don’t have roots. Instead, they have rhizoids, which are small hairlike structures. Rhizoids help plants in sticking to soil, and absorbing water and nutrients. Like other plants, they prepare their food through photosynthesis. How did the moss survive in Antarctica? Antarctica has a six months winter season, and during this time, it remains fully black without sunlight. The whole of Antarctica gets covered with thick snow. Moreover, the temperature gets as low as -76 °C. Therefore, it is very difficult for a plant to survive in this environment. Plant Habitat Class VII The scientists found that this moss mainly grew in areas where penguins were present in large numbers. Penguin’s dung has nitrogen. The dung might have worked as manure for the moss. But during winters (in the absence of sunlight), the moss goes to a dormant stage. In this stage, it stops its body activity and remains inactive as a seed. When the snow melts in the summer, the moss comes back to life, soaking up the water. Why are scientists worried? It’s climate change that is turning Antarctica green with plants, and the presence of moss is the proof! In Antarctica, scientists observed many melting glaciers. They also noticed other species of plants that earlier could not survive in Antarctica’s environment are now seen everywhere because of the warming up of the continent. • 12. 12 LIFESTYLE StudentEdge • August 2021 www.studentedge.in A ccording to a new study, changing the levels of different fatty acids in our diet can decrease headaches. Researchers at the University of North Carolina, USA, asked patients with headaches to change their diets. They were asked to stop eating foods that had bad fatty acids and instead eat food with ‘good’fats called Omega-3.This decreased their headaches in 3–4 months. What are good and bad fatty acids? Not all kinds of fats are bad for our health. Fat is a type of nutrient, and just like protein and carbohydrates, your body needs fat for producing energy. A balanced diet should include ‘good’ fatty acids that have many benefits: • They help lower blood pressure. • They maintain a normal heart rate. A new study has found that children who eat slower tend to be less impulsive. Being impulsive means doing things suddenly without proper thinking or planning. Researchers wanted to study the link between children’s moods and eating habits. They found that children who are slow eaters can focus more on enjoying the food, while those who eat faster can get easily irritated and angry. Sometimes due to anger, they start eating more. This can even lead to childhood obesity. So, the researchers found a clear link between mood and Eating slowly is better for both body and mood! food. The big question is: does our mood depend on what we eat, or does the food affect our mood? • The researchers found that eating habits among children mainly depend on food signals such as its appearance, smell, and taste. • The speed at which children eat depends on these signals. If they feel frustrated or uncomfortable, they tend to eat more and faster. • Children who are unable to control their negative emotions become moody. They have less self-control when it comes to eating. Food Class III Worksheet : LS022 Whatis your go-to food or dish when you are feeling sad? Does eating the dish make you feel better? Power Words Frustrated Feeling annoyed Obesity The disease that results from being overweight • Sometimes, parents use food to calm down their children. This creates a connection between one’s mood and eating habits. So, could the habit of eating slower make children less impulsive? Or, is it that less impulsive kids have more self- control when it comes to eating? Only future research will help us answer this question. Controlling Fatty Acids in Diet can Prevent Headaches • They help protect your heart and brain. Some of the best sources of good fats are olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish. On the other hand, consuming too much ‘bad’ fats makes you unhealthy. It leads to weight gain, cholesterol problems, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart attacks. Bad fatty acids are mostly found in junk food, chips, chocolate, and ready-to-eat meals. Most people are consuming a high amount of junk food nowadays, so our body mostly gets bad fats instead of good fatty acids. The new research proves that having a controlled diet with more good fats is good for our health. Therefore, our goal should be to use the goodness of healthy fats. Background Information Cholesterol Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in our blood. More than 94% of the new AI-based companies in India were started in the last five years and most of them are related to electronics, personal computers and health care. What is AI? Artificial intelligence or AI is the technology that uses computers to do things that traditionally require human intelligence, for example, creating a robot that can teach in a class and answer all the questions asked by students. Applications of AI AI is currently used in many areas. We have driverless cars. We have intelligent robots like Sophia that can talk to anyone like a person would. We also have Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa that can carry out orders from us, for instance, to switch on the lights or play music. Further, AI-based chess software can even defeat world champions in minutes. Future of AI In the future, AI will have many more applications. Google is also imposing another condition that TV manufacturers cannot use any other operating system or any other version of Android than what Google recommends. • 17. 17 StudentEdge • August 2021 www.studentedge.in E conomist Pinaki Chakraborty has said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) should not print extra money to tackle India’s fiscal deficit. This may lead to the wastage of money, and it is not a solution for the economic issue. What is the financial issue in India presently? The pandemic has affected India’s economy in many ways. People have lost their jobs, employees have been facing pay cuts, and it is tough to find new jobs. Many people are having a hard time. • Many people think the solution to bring back India’s economic situation to ‘normal’ is to print more money. The RBI is the organisation that prints money. If it just prints more money, we can use it for emergency funding. Sounds simple! • However, many economists believe that this is not a long- term solution. Chakraborty said that printing more money can make the country feel more secure for now. But, once there’s more money to use, people might start spending it on unnecessary things. If we print more money, it just means that we are printing money rather than doing any business.
