5. REVIEW SUMMARY
A young Colombian sailor named Luis Alejandro
Velasco, who was swept off his destroyer into rough
seas on a voyage from Mobile, Ala., to Cartagena,
Colombia. He found himself next to a life raft and
scrambled aboard. His four shipmates who fell into the
sea at the same time were drowned as they struggled
to join him. For 10 days Mr. Velasco drifted in the
Caribbean Sea without food or fresh water. His spirits
rose and fell like the waves around him - sinking as he
heard the cries of his drowning friends, rising as he
realized that he would soon be rescued, sinking again as
airplanes flew overhead and their pilots failed to see
him.
6. PICTORIAL REPRESENTATION
ON February 28 1955 a news came that crew
members of the destroyer CALDUS –the Colombian navy
ship was fallen overboard and disappeared during the storm
over the Caribbean Sea .Some of the crew members were
LOUIS ALEJANDER VALESCO , Castillo,Carabello
,Rengifo ,Ramón Herrera ..etc .The ship was travelling from
mobile Alabama to Colombia
7. One survived however and he was Louis Alejandro
Valesco,he spend 10 days on the raft in Caribbean Sea
but all the other crew members were drowned and valesco
struggled for these 10 days without food or water the only
things left with him was his watch ,his gold ring ,a chain
with a medal of the virgin of Carmen ,keys of his locker
and 3 business cards .
8. The true story The Ran in
the storm was written in the Colombian News
paper for 14 consecutive days and Valesco was
hled as a hero and the paper saled doubled but the
dictatorship of Colombian government shut down
the news paper .Later this story was written by
Gabriel Garcia Marquez in the title the story of
shipwrecked sailor .
