2. Introduction
Sherif Mohamed El-Refai is a pharmacist who
completed his graduate studies at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A proud follower
of Islam, Sherif Mohamed El-Refai is a member of
the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
CAIR is a non-profit civil rights advocacy group
that aims to promote a positive image of Islam in
the US. It continues to provide a Muslim voice
amid recurrent anti-Muslim actions across the
country.
3. CAIR
After an April 2016 incident, the CAIR San Diego
chapter initiated legal efforts on behalf of two Muslim
women who were denied admission to a ride at
Belmont Park on account of their wearing of hijabs.
CAIR alleges that Belmont Park's actions were in
direct violation of California's Unruh Civil Rights Act.
This incident is not the first time that CAIR was
involved in a legal action against an amusement park
based on its discriminatory actions. In 2014, CAIR
California chapter, together with UNITED SIKHS, filed
a complaint against Boomers! amusement park for
discriminating against several individuals wearing
religious headdresses.
