3. Paper chromatography is an analytical chemistry technique for separating and identifying mixtures that are or can be colored, especially Pigments.

5. Leaf Pigments

6. Chlorophyll often hides the other pigments present in leaves. In Autumn, chlorophyll breaks down, allowing xanthophylls and carotene, and newly made anthocyanin, to show their colors.

7. Xanthophylls (is one of the leaf pigments) are yellow pigments contain hydroxyl groups and/or pairs of hydrogen atoms that are substituted by oxygen atoms. Xanthophylls are found in the leaves of most plants, where they act to modulate light energy.

8. The term carotene (also carotin) is used for several related hydrocarbon substances having the formula C40Hx, which are synthesized by plants but cannot be made by animals. Carotene is an orange photosynthetic pigment important for photosynthesis. Carotenes are all coloured to the human eye.

9. Anthocyanins (also anthocyans) are water-soluble vacuolar pigments that may appear red, purple, or blue according to pH.
