Geopolymers are new materials for fire- and heat-resistant coatings and adhesives, medicinal applications, high-temperature ceramics, new binders for fire-resistant fiber composites, toxic and radioactive waste encapsulation and new cements for concrete.
3. INTRODUCTION: WHY TO REPLACE
OPC?
The Portland cement production contributes 7 % of total CO2 gas
emission ,a major cause of global worming.
Production of Portland cement requires massively huge quantity of
CaCO3.
A huge amount of water is used in making concrete mixes.
4. Why GEOPOLYMER?
To reduce the co2 emission by totally replacing the cement.
To produce concrete with very negligible water.
To use the industrial by-product for a beneficial purpose , e.g. –
fly-ash , RHA , GGBS , kaolinite , clay etc.
To conserve the hundreds of thousands of acres currently used for
disposal of coal combustion products.
To provide a new , durable and eco-friendly engineering construction
material.
5. GEO-POLYMER CONCRETE
It is the concrete without cement and very negligible water .
The basic component of this concrete are :-
1.Source materials :
alumina-silicate (pozolanic materials) (fly ash,GGBS,kaolinite, RHA etc.)
2.Alkaline liquids :
combination of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide
(KOH)and sodium silicate or potassium silicate.
The alkali solutions are reacts with the pozolanic materials , its may be
from geological or industrial origin and make polymerization reaction to
form a matrix so the concrete called as geo-polymer concrete.
6. OPC VS. GEO POLYMER
Greater corrosion resistance.
Substantially higher fire resistance(upto 1316 degree Celsius)
High compressive and tensile strengths.
7. Rapid strength gain and lower shrinkage & segregation
Greenhouse gas reduction potential as much as 90%when compared
with OPC.
Higher sulphate resistance.
11. CONCLUSIONS
The reduced CO2 emission of Geopolymer makes it a
good alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement.
Produces a substance that is comparable to or better than
traditional cements with respect to most properties.
Geo polymer concrete has excellent properties within both
acid and salt environments
Low-calcium fly ash-based geopolymer concrete has
excellent compressive strength and is suitable for
Structural applications.
