Like other investment companies, Charles Hunt raise finances from its clients
and then examines the ways, on long term basis, to secure optimal dividends for
their clients. Currently, it is focusing on Waltham Forest College; an expanding public
sector college and Costa Coffee, a successful and international coffee chain. The
behaviors of both these companies in their respective marketing environment differ
greatly but eventually relate to the national environment. In this paper, we will explain
how an increase in immigration to the UK influences the educational sector which will
help us in devising the plan for next 5 years for the Waltham College. We will discuss
what advantages and benefits this college might face when expanding to other
countries and how it will be influenced if Indian economy weakens. We will also
explain and discuss the impact of the law stating responsible for increasing the
minimum wage per hour on business practice of UK. We will present brief
descriptions of both the organizations and their purposes, demonstrating how
businesses operate in National environment.
Task 1
The increasing in immigration to the UK influences the education sector. And also
according to the statistics provided by the UK government net migration to the UK in
2014 was 260,000 (Migration Watch UK, 2015). The reports reveal that in last 15
years, the statistics of immigration to UK are decreasing. However, the immigrants
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152

from all these years have contributed in making UK one of those countries where
immigration rate is very high. Importantly, this has notable effect on the education
sector of UK eventually. Some aspects that demonstrate these effects are discussed
below:
a. Price of courses:
The education sector in United Kingdom attracts international students all around the
world for its strong reputation for producing graduates . Due to increased number
of demand, educational institutes have employed different strategies for pricing the
course they offer. Different prices for different courses at different institutes show
that how the business of ‘education’ is being run and affected by the
immigration. Normally students from outside the EU are generally charged the
overseas rate, which is bit higher than local students, because there is no subsidy is
given to universities and public funded colleges for international students to help
meet the cost of their education. Mean while colleges and university charges a low
Fees for the EU students
In general context, the prices of courses in UK are increasing dramatically for the
international students because these days college need to maintain certain level of
standards to sponsor international students and also they need to obtain a sponsor
license from UKVI. These days prices of the courses increases due to inflation and
the demand for admission at colleges has also increased due to the limited no of
licensed sponsor available in the education market .
These days there is only limited no of sponsors so there is a high demand of
international students so there is also a possible chance to employ more staff ,
teachers especially, will be hired.. So therefore college needed to consider the
several factors such as cost of running the courses and staff wages and other direct
and indirect cost before determine the price of a course
b. Competition between educational institutes:
Institution in a uk can be divided into two categories one is public
funded college &universities second one is private institutions.
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
5 | Page
There is a huge competition to get a admission in public funded college these
days because not only they provided the quality of education but also
students are allowed to work certain hours
XX College
This college which offers higher national diploma to top up degrees in
management and business and in addition to this its offer some vocational
courses such as diploma in marketing and tourism which attracts overseas
students. XX college student has accessed to online library which have
access other public funded colleges module
Competition in education sector of UK is also strengthening and so is the demand
of education in the region. Immigrants are not much aware of the reputation of
different educational institutes in UK. A common perception of studying at Oxford
University, Kings School, Beverly, UCL, Queen Mary, LSE, and Liverpool
University is present among them, as they believe that the situation of
educational sector in UK is similar to that as it was some decades ago. However,
this era has changed now. New schools, colleges, and universities are formed
that has started a fresh air of competition in the UK education sector. There is a
another thing for competition
Example: Waltham Forest College has lot competitors in its related field. These
include west minister college North London, Tutorial College. This college
provides BTEC course, HNC/HND, ACCESS & APPRENTESHIPS, MBA, AFL,
and ATT. They have many courses for students for their availability either part
time or fulltime, in addition to this the colleges is offering full time courses for
overseas students as well. The college provided good facilities other than these
also. In this way, if we compare WFC with any other institution, such as Enfield
College, we see that the number and variety of courses are lesser than WFC.
Apart from this, the teaching styles are similar, while Enfield struggles to offer
more courses to its students.
And also wkc offer students’ additions facilities such as coaching counseling and
fitness package at lower cost compare to other institution in the market
c. Delivery of education:
Education in UK is greatly affected from increasing immigration and also
employment. The most crucial of them is the diversity issues; cultural differences
and biasness has possibly affected the classroom environment and workplace.
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
6 | Page
Immigrants are being deprived of getting quality education, but they choose cost
effective courses mainly due to having low budget. Importantly, majority of them
have weak English language skills, due to which understanding the college,
offered courses, lectures, and curriculum become quite difficult for them. In this
way, the delivery of education to these students becomes a major issue in many
colleges. So the delivery of education to the students then also becomes difficult.
A larger population of international students prefers doing part time jobs, which
they often fail to get. Even though immigration policy for international students is
very complex, job opportunities for them are, available, however. According to the
latest statistics provided by the UK Council for International Student Affairs,
around 435, 500 international students are studying in higher educational
institutes of UK, constituting about 18% of the total student population of UK
(UKCISA Online, 2015). In this way, the competition between organizations
having the policy of offering jobs to international students in increasing. Also,
since UK government has made policy that the national minimum wage rate
is £6.50 per hour for international students aged 21 or over and £5.13 per hour
for the ones aged 18-20 (Advice Guide, Online). In this way, a great number of
local students are deprived from jobs in their own country or might not be
properly paid.
d. Employment opportunities:
Even though employment opportunities are less for immigrants and international
students in UK, they are still present. Evidently, these opportunities are better
than their native countries. A little struggle is required for this, starting with
abiding by the policies and guides made in this regard for international students.
Despite of all difficulties, immigrants have great chances of getting jobs during
their stay in UK. For example, in UK limited no of the educational institute gives
work permit for international students. So they get good opportunity to do part-
time job. Like as Waltham Forest College give 10 hour work per week for
international students.
e. Law enforcement:
This is another major factor that plays a crucial role in the education sector of UK
with respect to immigration, i.e. security threats. This issue has hiked after the
9/11 incident and some other terrorists attempts in UK. A research proves that
international students contribute £2.5bn annually through tuition fees, etc. that is
later used in financing higher education for domestic students (Pettinger, 2013).
To say that immigration has positive impacts on the education sector won’t be
right. The immigration on work, asylum, etc. visas have brought on more
immigrants that are responsible on overcrowding the public schools, etc. No
distinguished laws for immigrants or international students are formed in UK.
When not much regulations and obligations are present for them, they have
better prospects for employment eventually. If any international student is doing
part time job along with his studies, he is bound to pay taxation to the UK
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152

government. As WFC gives 10 hour per week, the international students pay
taxes as well.
Task 2
The mission of Waltham Forest College is to expand its branches outside the
UK as well. Also, since UK has people from different races, ethnic groups, and
cultures, along with the native Englishmen, there is need for definitive 5 year plan for
the college. Some important factors should consider following factors when
developing a 5 year plan.
- Employment Opportunities: The biggest turbulent immigration issue in UK is
that who came legally and who entered UK through unlawful means. For this
purpose, the College will have to transparent its record and monitoring
system. The immigrant students would have to be checked keenly, along with
their family, origin, and background. As the number of students will expectedly
increase in the college due to immigration, Waltham forest college should
introduce courses which provide work placement opportunity for students
- and also need to introduce new courses which provide a guaranteed work
after completion of the course. And also can included the personal
development workshop for each students and monitor their performance
- . The teachers and academic persons should have vast experience in this
field, must have a proper degree, enhanced communication skills so that they
can easily interact with foreign students also, have prior experience in the
related fields, and must be cooperative. Since Waltham College will be
covering many courses of various academic fields, the teachers should be
vast and not necessarily have English background.
- Expansions & Development: at the moment Waltham has only one branch
- throughout United Kingdom. The college will be expanded to other states as
well. The mission is to launch at least three more branched in different cities
of England. All these branches must have a strong organizational structure
must comprise of all significant departments, including Accounts,
Management, Human Resources, etc. The management must be such that it
facilitates both the students as well as the employees of the college. The
latest technology will be used and the organization will strive to adopt change
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
8 | Page
as readily as possible. For students, the most important stakeholders of
Waltham, laboratories and workrooms will be set.
- Courses Available: Other than the management and healthcare, the college
will offer courses Like HND and Top up degree and also need to offer are part
time professional courses like ACCA, CIMA, ARTS, and many more. This will
have more prospects for the students interested in getting admission at this
college other than UK as it will help in transfer.
Fees structure:
Waltham is present in a very competitive market of education sector and has
the mission to provide quality education to maximum number of students
without facing economic loss. When Waltham Forest College make the plan
for next 5 years, they think about the Fees structure of this college. From this
they can calculator how much they need to cover and control the college.
When they plan for fees structure, Waltham Forest College can know the cost
to open more courses with the fees to student, salary for member staff, the
cost of equipment and other stuff.
Example: WFC open two more hair cate course but they do not have enough
room and equipment. So they have to expand more room and equipment for
student. By follow that, they have to calculator the fees structure they will use
in the two new courses. From that they can control their budget statement
easier.
Improvements in technology:
Develop of technology is very important for any educational institute.to
improve the technology college need to sign a contact with a leading
technology firm So they can make sure their technology is upto dated
compare to competitors Waltham Forest College have a plan to improve
their technology for which they will bring changes gradually and step by step.
An example: As Waltham Forest College intend to expand its IT department
and plans to offer courses also in this field, they will need new computers and
other technological equipment’s, such as printers, scanners, projectors, etc.
Since these things have a noticeable cost, calculations and budgeting will be
required for this. In this way, they can easily follow and control their statement
easily.
- Culture of College:
- Primarily, the college will refrain from the zero-tolerance culture. The students
will be given space to explain and justify their actions. However, strict
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
9 | Page
discipline will be observed. The similar approach will be employed for the
workforce of the college. Everybody will be equal in the eyes of the law of the
college. Due to increasing immigration, diversity issues will also increase for
which actions will be taken to create harmony among all groups. Teachers
and other staff will be trained on how to deal and communicate with
international students. A manual will also be provided to the students in this
regard and if any issue takes place, coordination teams will be set to look into
the matter. Appropriate actions, including penalties and punishments will be
taken against the students or staff involved in any such activity.
- Challenges leadership of the college:
Leadership is very important role within the business. It is the business of
organisation. So WalthamForest College have some concept. Leadership will
make the plan, while giving directions on the staff about how to execute it and
what development strategy they will follow next five years to achieve success.
Leadership will coordinate and cooperate with staff and students in achieving
their personal and professional goals, according to a definitive plan. And also
motivated college staff and student to do hard work and follow the right
direction. If the plan goes well, it will take the college to an entirely new level.
Task 3
Waltham Forest College is planning to open three international campuses in
Brazil, India, and Russia. The outcomes will obviously be different in each of them as
the education sector and business industry of these countries vary from UK. Brazil is
becoming one of the biggest for-profit education sectors in the world, with still many
developments to take place. India, on the other hand, is somehow weak but notable
changes are seen in the last decade, usually pointing towards development in the
education sector. Russia, even though once being a super power, has an unstable
and weak education sector, as they usually rely on international scholarships. In this
way, we cannot say that it will be total constructive or a very negative decision since
it has advantages and disadvantages, both.
1. Advantages
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
10 | Page
a. Whenever an international assignment starts in any new country, the
inflation rates in that location tend to decrease, thus increasing
employment opportunities. In this way, the unemployment of the
location in any of the above mentioned countries where the college is
opened will decrease somehow. The recruitment will be done from the
UK citizens as well, thus increasing employment in UK as well (Acs &
Mueller, 2008).
b. The college, along with its investor Charles Hunt Investments, will enter
into the new education business markets of India, Russia and Brazil,
thus achieving better prospects. They will compete with the local and
national colleges and since English education is still deemed of much
quality and value, more students will be attracted towards Waltham.
c. If the business of Waltham falls and faces economic issues in UK,
international branches will be manage the finances and funding. The
GDP in these countries will be different from that of UK along with other
economic factors. Perhaps, the revenues derived from these countries
will help the college in surviving in the home market consequently.
d. The name of Waltham Forest College will become a brand image in the
international markets, Brazil, India, and Russia being the prominent
ones. In this way, the reputation will be built in not only these countries
but also the UK. To expand more and to give better prospects, the
students in branches of Russia, Brazil and India will be offered
opportunity to get transferred to UK branch, thus increasing the number
of customers and migrants to UK. As mentioned before, Russia
depends on international scholarships, the name of WFC will allow
Russia to make the decision of offering scholarships in this college
also.
e. Cultural Development: Waltham will act as the bridge between UK and
Russia, Brazil and India for exchange between cultures and ideas.
2. Disadvantages
a. Entering the new market will be a challenge as other reputable
institutes will already be present. Because, they need to provide good
facilities and education. And the course fees and equipment everything
will be suitable for local students. If they remain their course fee same
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
11 | Page
like as UK. So it too expensive. Because those country economic are
not developed like UK. So most of the students are like to go other
institute.
b. Important practices will be stopped due to different laws and
regulations of the international market or the new country. Such as, a
student in Brazil has studied in the local campus of WFC and now
he/she want to apply for higher education in UK. In this scenario, UKBA
usually causes many difficulties for such students. Now, they will give
the reason that they can still get the certificate provided from UK.
c. If the country undergoes economic, political or other social issue, direct
effects will be caused to Waltham, such as local anarchies, economic
recession, and terrorist activities.
d. A number of businesses fall down in international markets due to
different language and inability to cope up with the new culture.
Imagine a scenario where branches of Waltham Forest College are opened in
cities of Mumbai and New Delhi in India. For first two years, the college stays put but
is certainly in the struggling phase. After two years, Indian economy begins to suffer
from high inflation, rising interest rates, and high unemployment. The outcomes on
Waltham will vary. Since the inflation will be high, the college will have to decrease
its fees otherwise students will move towards the local colleges. The interest rates
were high, so more funding will be required, which is again a loss for the
organization. The only positive aspect is the high unemployment. We will benefit
from this as we can recruit employees on lower wages as well. Many other school,
colleges, and universities, including Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Tata
Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Milia Islami, and many more will
already be present in city we are opening Waltham. Competing with these local,
countries oldest, and reputable institutions will be difficult. Any social or political
instability will turn out to be problematic for the English staff here, such as Mumbai
Attacks of 2008.
Task 4
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
12 | Page
The European Union is debating to pass a law that will increase the minimum wage
per hour to £8.39p per hour.
According from government the minimum wage from 1stOctober 2013 is:
● The minimum wage for adult per hour increased from £6.19 to £6.31
another below inflation rise, making the NMW worth less.
● For development rate for teenagers(18-20) went up from £4.98 to
£5.03
● For 16 to 17-year-olds it was increased from £3.68 to £3.72, up by
4p/hour
● For apprentice minimum wage rate went from £2.65 to just £2.68 per
hour, up just 3p - all apprentices under the age of 19 and those aged 19 and
over in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship.
Now the European Union want increase the minimum wage from £6.31p to £8.39p. It
will be a big step when they increase the minimum wage because by the UK current
economy, the company cannot afford to pay that wage. So they will increase those
things below.
Rate of unemployment
● The number of people out of work fell by 125,000 to 2.34 million in the
three months to December, according to the Office for National Statistics.
● The unemployment rate of the economically active population is now
7.2%, and the number of people in work is 30.15 million.
● The claimant count - the number of people claiming Jobseeker's
Allowance - fell by 27,600 to 1.22 million in January.
If government keep increases the minimum wage to£8.39p per hour and the
company cannot able to pay salary by maintain this wage for their staff, it will
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
13 | Page
increased the unemployment rate. Because the company does not have enough
financial support for their new staff. Also they have to cut off their old staff, they can
just keep any one is important in their company for reducing the company cost. So
that is the main reason it will make the rate unemployment is gone up faster. So from
the chart the rate of unemployment 2.3 million people in January 2014. But if
government increase the minimum wage to £8.39p,so the company cannot afford for
it. At a result the rate of unemployment after 6 month can begrown up 2.9 million
people.
Inflation
● The UK inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI)
fell to 1.9% in January from 2% the month before, according to the Office for
National Statistics (ONS).
● It is the first time inflation has fallen below the Bank of England's 2%
target rate in more than four years.
● The ONS said the lower inflation rate was in large part due to a fall in
the cost of recreational and cultural activities, including falling DVD prices and
lower entrance fees to attractions.
● While the Consumer Prices Index fell, the rate of Retail Prices Index
(RPI) inflation, which is calculated differently, increased slightly to 2.8% from
2.7%.
So the rate of unemployment is gone up it will make the inflation rate go up too. So
with the minimum wage is £8.39p, the value of it will go down? Because the
president who does not have a job, will not have a lot money to buy everything. So it
will have a huge impact to UK economy. From it every activity from government will
have the delay because they cannot afford to pay for the staff and the value of their
money is low. Also the TAX coming will going down by the high unemployment rate
and the value of money is going down every month.
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
14 | Page
Interest rates
● The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept interest
rates at the record low of 0.5% at its meeting in February. It also left the
£375bn quantitative easing stimulus programme unchanged.
● But the continued fall in the UK unemployment rate, now at 7.1% has
sparked a debate about when interest rates may need to rise.
● In August last year Bank Governor Mark Carney said that interest rates
were unlikely to be raised before the jobless rate falls to 7%.
● But in mid-February he adjusted that stance, saying a wider range of
indicators would be taken into account, meaning interest rates could remain at
low levels for some time even as unemployment falls further.
Also the interest rate of UK will going down too. Because the unemployment is high
so the president does not have a job then they do not have enough money to cover
their life and they do not have much money to put in the bank. By another hand, the
company can get the benefit from it because they can get loan with lowest rate from
bank. However, it still impact direct to government because they cannot control the
value of money when the president using cash only.
Exchange Rates:
At the moment the exchange rate from GBP to USD is 1.6694. The minimum wage is
gone and it makes the inflation rate is gone up. So the exchange rate of pound to
another monetary will be going down. Example: after 6 month the inflation is go high,
the value of money will going down. One traveller who live in US, want to travel in
UK. When he exchanges his money from US to UK, he will get the best value for him
because exchange rate in that time from GBP to USD is 0.9616. So he does not
need to use lot money to exchange his USD to GBP.

Task 5
Waltham Forest College is located in North East London and is offers many
vocational courses to the 14-19 year olds and adults. It was founded in 1936 and
was removed from the control of the local authorities in 1992 and became an
independent corporation, run under a Statutory Instrument (UK Government
secondary legislation) known as the Instrument and Articles of Government
(Waltham Forest College Alumni, Online). Currently, it is offering many courses to its
students, such as business, management and accounting, English for speakers of
other languages childcare, health and social care, computing and information
technology (ICT), construction and electrical installation, automotive engineering, art
and design fashion, hair and beauty care, catering and hospitality, public services,
sport studies, teacher training and professional development, travel and tourism, and
many more (Waltham Forest College, Online). It is a local company with no branches
other main campus in the North East London. We can say that it falls under the
secondary and tertiary business sectors as it does not extract anything but produces
courses and educational contents, conducts events related to them, and provide
educational and vocational services. Its vision is to “deliver responsive, outstanding
teaching, learning and support to meet the needs of individuals and employers and
inspire our students to develop the high quality skills and knowledge they need to be
successful in their future lives” with the mission to “be the College of first choice for
vocational excellence”. It is a non-stock corporation. It works with the corporate
responsibility of respect, excellence, openness, fairness, teamwork, and success
(Waltham Forest College, Online). The organization has many key legal
responsibilities; consumer protection and customer service being the most important
as it is an education institute and students they are teaching are the future of the
country, thus being subjected to many laws, such as Consumer Protection Act 1986.
They have to provide quality as well as legal and ethical education to the students.
They have to train the students coming to them in such way that they become
responsible and productive citizens of the society then.

Costa Coffee is a British multinational coffeehouse company with
headquarters in Dunstable, UK. Also, it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Whitbread. It
was founded by two brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa in 1971 and its current CEO of
the company is Chris Rogers. According to the latest statistics, it is the second
largest coffeehouse chain in the world after Starbucks and the largest in the United
Kingdom (Costa Coffee, Online). It is a primary, secondary, and tertiary company. It
extracts its own raw materials, produces the coffee and other items, and then offer
services to its customers in their coffeehouses. It is a global company with 1,106
stores throughout the world in 30 countries (Costa Coffee UK, Online). The annual
operating income of Costa Coffee is £340.9 million (WhitBread Annual Report, 2009)
and it has no shares in the London stock market. The mission of Costa is “to save
the world from mediocre coffee” with the vision to “be the best hospitality company
that there is in each market in which they operate” (Costa Coffee, Online). Their
objective is to excel from every coffee to the cup they provide to their customers. It
has many legal responsibilities, diversity and equal approaches, and employment
acts being the fundamental. This is because the company is found globally and in
order to excel, it should make strategies that promote a sense of feeling and equality
for all cultures. Also, employment acts should be totally legal and fair for all
employees.
Task 6
UK is the country with the fifth largest national economy in the world. The economic
climate of UK has direct impact on Waltham College. The constant GDP have no
prominent effects on the economy and financial outcomes. The employment rates,
along with population trends, labor force, balance of payments and UL exchange
rates will be directly proportional to the GDP of the country. There is no chance of
recession and taxation will also vary according to the economic policies of the UK.
During economic crisis, the fiscal policy of UK will be beneficial for Waltham College
as taxation will be decreased which will eventually lead to increased saving and
investment on the internal factors of the college. However, since this policy takes
times in implementation and Waltham requires immediate funding, delay will lead to
adverse effects. The monetary policy will play a role in keeping inflation low which
will foster a stable price system. The outcomes of monetary policy are delayed, thus
again delaying the financial matters. The Competition Act of 1998, that provides an
updated framework for identifying and dealing with restrictive business practices and
abuse of a dominant market position, has no influence on college as it is located in
one city of UK only. Also, since this act is to harmonize between the UK and other
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152
17 | Page
European states and Waltham is located nowhere except for in England, Waltham is
not affected by it. The Enterprise Act of 2002, stating regulations for the mergers
between companies, presently has no effect on Waltham but will have major effects
if it intends to expand to other countries or merge others. As it has no legal standing
in other countries, it is only applicable in UK. If the organization intends to expand in
other cities of United Kingdom, this Act will be applicable. The company will have to
face from serious restrictions on land agreements, thus will increase the competition
more. Also, it would have an impact both on realizations and on costs in corporate
insolvency proceedings which will consequently accommodate in the introduction of
the administration and company voluntary arrangement procedures. A similar
situation occurred in 2010 for some grocery retailer companies of UK, including
Asda, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury, etc. as they were required to assure that they
will practice any restrictive covenants against the Competition Act or their license will
be cancelled. Enterprise Act of 2002, working alongside with the Competition Act,
has enabled in rescuing procedures during 2003, when some companies, such as
British Airways were in the process of merging.
Costa Coffee, being an international company, is not only affected from the
economic climate of UK but also from that of other countries, GDP being the key
player. The countries where this company is working tend to affect the factors in
different ways. Population trends, labor force, employment rates, recession, inflation,
balance of payments, and taxation vary according to the countries where franchises
of Costa are located. Fiscal policy often doesn’t help in forecasting the outcomes and
mistakes of the Costa but is crucial in controlling inflation rates. Since Costa is an
international business, monetary policy provide political independence in
implementation and practice of strategies and policies. However, conflict in goals
creates issues for Costa. It must be noted here that multinational companies,
including Costa Coffee, will have no effect on the inflation in UK with respect to the
monetary policy. Competition Act will facilitate in harmonizing with franchises of other
European states.
Conclusion
In this paper, we discussed the economic climate of the UK and what effects it
has on the business environment of Waltham College and Costa Coffee.
Immigration, a turbulent issue in UK currently, has serious influence on the practices
of the business, thus affecting the other areas of life as well, including education,
retail, production, etc. To deal with this issue, it is very important for the UK
government to take appropriate actions, which has positive outcomes on not only the
national security and structure of the country but also the development sectors,
which in turn will help in construction of other sectors consequently. We learned that
Muktaderalishikdar 10063152

every business is affected from the laws and policies of the country from where it has
its origins and where it is operating. The findings of this paper will help us in
determining that which of them can produce maximum finances in order to secure
optimal dividends for clients of Charles Hunt Investments.

  • 3. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 3 | Page Like other investment companies, Charles Hunt raise finances from its clients and then examines the ways, on long term basis, to secure optimal dividends for their clients. Currently, it is focusing on Waltham Forest College; an expanding public sector college and Costa Coffee, a successful and international coffee chain. The behaviors of both these companies in their respective marketing environment differ greatly but eventually relate to the national environment. In this paper, we will explain how an increase in immigration to the UK influences the educational sector which will help us in devising the plan for next 5 years for the Waltham College. We will discuss what advantages and benefits this college might face when expanding to other countries and how it will be influenced if Indian economy weakens. We will also explain and discuss the impact of the law stating responsible for increasing the minimum wage per hour on business practice of UK. We will present brief descriptions of both the organizations and their purposes, demonstrating how businesses operate in National environment. Task 1 The increasing in immigration to the UK influences the education sector. And also according to the statistics provided by the UK government net migration to the UK in 2014 was 260,000 (Migration Watch UK, 2015). The reports reveal that in last 15 years, the statistics of immigration to UK are decreasing. However, the immigrants
  • 4. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 4 | Page from all these years have contributed in making UK one of those countries where immigration rate is very high. Importantly, this has notable effect on the education sector of UK eventually. Some aspects that demonstrate these effects are discussed below: a. Price of courses: The education sector in United Kingdom attracts international students all around the world for its strong reputation for producing graduates . Due to increased number of demand, educational institutes have employed different strategies for pricing the course they offer. Different prices for different courses at different institutes show that how the business of ‘education’ is being run and affected by the immigration. Normally students from outside the EU are generally charged the overseas rate, which is bit higher than local students, because there is no subsidy is given to universities and public funded colleges for international students to help meet the cost of their education. Mean while colleges and university charges a low Fees for the EU students In general context, the prices of courses in UK are increasing dramatically for the international students because these days college need to maintain certain level of standards to sponsor international students and also they need to obtain a sponsor license from UKVI. These days prices of the courses increases due to inflation and the demand for admission at colleges has also increased due to the limited no of licensed sponsor available in the education market . These days there is only limited no of sponsors so there is a high demand of international students so there is also a possible chance to employ more staff , teachers especially, will be hired.. So therefore college needed to consider the several factors such as cost of running the courses and staff wages and other direct and indirect cost before determine the price of a course b. Competition between educational institutes: Institution in a uk can be divided into two categories one is public funded college &universities second one is private institutions.
  • 5. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 5 | Page There is a huge competition to get a admission in public funded college these days because not only they provided the quality of education but also students are allowed to work certain hours XX College This college which offers higher national diploma to top up degrees in management and business and in addition to this its offer some vocational courses such as diploma in marketing and tourism which attracts overseas students. XX college student has accessed to online library which have access other public funded colleges module Competition in education sector of UK is also strengthening and so is the demand of education in the region. Immigrants are not much aware of the reputation of different educational institutes in UK. A common perception of studying at Oxford University, Kings School, Beverly, UCL, Queen Mary, LSE, and Liverpool University is present among them, as they believe that the situation of educational sector in UK is similar to that as it was some decades ago. However, this era has changed now. New schools, colleges, and universities are formed that has started a fresh air of competition in the UK education sector. There is a another thing for competition Example: Waltham Forest College has lot competitors in its related field. These include west minister college North London, Tutorial College. This college provides BTEC course, HNC/HND, ACCESS & APPRENTESHIPS, MBA, AFL, and ATT. They have many courses for students for their availability either part time or fulltime, in addition to this the colleges is offering full time courses for overseas students as well. The college provided good facilities other than these also. In this way, if we compare WFC with any other institution, such as Enfield College, we see that the number and variety of courses are lesser than WFC. Apart from this, the teaching styles are similar, while Enfield struggles to offer more courses to its students. And also wkc offer students’ additions facilities such as coaching counseling and fitness package at lower cost compare to other institution in the market c. Delivery of education: Education in UK is greatly affected from increasing immigration and also employment. The most crucial of them is the diversity issues; cultural differences and biasness has possibly affected the classroom environment and workplace.
  • 6. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 6 | Page Immigrants are being deprived of getting quality education, but they choose cost effective courses mainly due to having low budget. Importantly, majority of them have weak English language skills, due to which understanding the college, offered courses, lectures, and curriculum become quite difficult for them. In this way, the delivery of education to these students becomes a major issue in many colleges. So the delivery of education to the students then also becomes difficult. A larger population of international students prefers doing part time jobs, which they often fail to get. Even though immigration policy for international students is very complex, job opportunities for them are, available, however. According to the latest statistics provided by the UK Council for International Student Affairs, around 435, 500 international students are studying in higher educational institutes of UK, constituting about 18% of the total student population of UK (UKCISA Online, 2015). In this way, the competition between organizations having the policy of offering jobs to international students in increasing. Also, since UK government has made policy that the national minimum wage rate is £6.50 per hour for international students aged 21 or over and £5.13 per hour for the ones aged 18-20 (Advice Guide, Online). In this way, a great number of local students are deprived from jobs in their own country or might not be properly paid. d. Employment opportunities: Even though employment opportunities are less for immigrants and international students in UK, they are still present. Evidently, these opportunities are better than their native countries. A little struggle is required for this, starting with abiding by the policies and guides made in this regard for international students. Despite of all difficulties, immigrants have great chances of getting jobs during their stay in UK. For example, in UK limited no of the educational institute gives work permit for international students. So they get good opportunity to do part- time job. Like as Waltham Forest College give 10 hour work per week for international students. e. Law enforcement: This is another major factor that plays a crucial role in the education sector of UK with respect to immigration, i.e. security threats. This issue has hiked after the 9/11 incident and some other terrorists attempts in UK. A research proves that international students contribute £2.5bn annually through tuition fees, etc. that is later used in financing higher education for domestic students (Pettinger, 2013). To say that immigration has positive impacts on the education sector won’t be right. The immigration on work, asylum, etc. visas have brought on more immigrants that are responsible on overcrowding the public schools, etc. No distinguished laws for immigrants or international students are formed in UK. When not much regulations and obligations are present for them, they have better prospects for employment eventually. If any international student is doing part time job along with his studies, he is bound to pay taxation to the UK
  • 7. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 7 | Page government. As WFC gives 10 hour per week, the international students pay taxes as well. Task 2 The mission of Waltham Forest College is to expand its branches outside the UK as well. Also, since UK has people from different races, ethnic groups, and cultures, along with the native Englishmen, there is need for definitive 5 year plan for the college. Some important factors should consider following factors when developing a 5 year plan. - Employment Opportunities: The biggest turbulent immigration issue in UK is that who came legally and who entered UK through unlawful means. For this purpose, the College will have to transparent its record and monitoring system. The immigrant students would have to be checked keenly, along with their family, origin, and background. As the number of students will expectedly increase in the college due to immigration, Waltham forest college should introduce courses which provide work placement opportunity for students - and also need to introduce new courses which provide a guaranteed work after completion of the course. And also can included the personal development workshop for each students and monitor their performance - . The teachers and academic persons should have vast experience in this field, must have a proper degree, enhanced communication skills so that they can easily interact with foreign students also, have prior experience in the related fields, and must be cooperative. Since Waltham College will be covering many courses of various academic fields, the teachers should be vast and not necessarily have English background. - Expansions & Development: at the moment Waltham has only one branch - throughout United Kingdom. The college will be expanded to other states as well. The mission is to launch at least three more branched in different cities of England. All these branches must have a strong organizational structure must comprise of all significant departments, including Accounts, Management, Human Resources, etc. The management must be such that it facilitates both the students as well as the employees of the college. The latest technology will be used and the organization will strive to adopt change
  • 8. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 8 | Page as readily as possible. For students, the most important stakeholders of Waltham, laboratories and workrooms will be set. - Courses Available: Other than the management and healthcare, the college will offer courses Like HND and Top up degree and also need to offer are part time professional courses like ACCA, CIMA, ARTS, and many more. This will have more prospects for the students interested in getting admission at this college other than UK as it will help in transfer. Fees structure: Waltham is present in a very competitive market of education sector and has the mission to provide quality education to maximum number of students without facing economic loss. When Waltham Forest College make the plan for next 5 years, they think about the Fees structure of this college. From this they can calculator how much they need to cover and control the college. When they plan for fees structure, Waltham Forest College can know the cost to open more courses with the fees to student, salary for member staff, the cost of equipment and other stuff. Example: WFC open two more hair cate course but they do not have enough room and equipment. So they have to expand more room and equipment for student. By follow that, they have to calculator the fees structure they will use in the two new courses. From that they can control their budget statement easier. Improvements in technology: Develop of technology is very important for any educational institute.to improve the technology college need to sign a contact with a leading technology firm So they can make sure their technology is upto dated compare to competitors Waltham Forest College have a plan to improve their technology for which they will bring changes gradually and step by step. An example: As Waltham Forest College intend to expand its IT department and plans to offer courses also in this field, they will need new computers and other technological equipment’s, such as printers, scanners, projectors, etc. Since these things have a noticeable cost, calculations and budgeting will be required for this. In this way, they can easily follow and control their statement easily. - Culture of College: - Primarily, the college will refrain from the zero-tolerance culture. The students will be given space to explain and justify their actions. However, strict
  • 9. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 9 | Page discipline will be observed. The similar approach will be employed for the workforce of the college. Everybody will be equal in the eyes of the law of the college. Due to increasing immigration, diversity issues will also increase for which actions will be taken to create harmony among all groups. Teachers and other staff will be trained on how to deal and communicate with international students. A manual will also be provided to the students in this regard and if any issue takes place, coordination teams will be set to look into the matter. Appropriate actions, including penalties and punishments will be taken against the students or staff involved in any such activity. - Challenges leadership of the college: Leadership is very important role within the business. It is the business of organisation. So WalthamForest College have some concept. Leadership will make the plan, while giving directions on the staff about how to execute it and what development strategy they will follow next five years to achieve success. Leadership will coordinate and cooperate with staff and students in achieving their personal and professional goals, according to a definitive plan. And also motivated college staff and student to do hard work and follow the right direction. If the plan goes well, it will take the college to an entirely new level. Task 3 Waltham Forest College is planning to open three international campuses in Brazil, India, and Russia. The outcomes will obviously be different in each of them as the education sector and business industry of these countries vary from UK. Brazil is becoming one of the biggest for-profit education sectors in the world, with still many developments to take place. India, on the other hand, is somehow weak but notable changes are seen in the last decade, usually pointing towards development in the education sector. Russia, even though once being a super power, has an unstable and weak education sector, as they usually rely on international scholarships. In this way, we cannot say that it will be total constructive or a very negative decision since it has advantages and disadvantages, both. 1. Advantages
  • 10. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 10 | Page a. Whenever an international assignment starts in any new country, the inflation rates in that location tend to decrease, thus increasing employment opportunities. In this way, the unemployment of the location in any of the above mentioned countries where the college is opened will decrease somehow. The recruitment will be done from the UK citizens as well, thus increasing employment in UK as well (Acs & Mueller, 2008). b. The college, along with its investor Charles Hunt Investments, will enter into the new education business markets of India, Russia and Brazil, thus achieving better prospects. They will compete with the local and national colleges and since English education is still deemed of much quality and value, more students will be attracted towards Waltham. c. If the business of Waltham falls and faces economic issues in UK, international branches will be manage the finances and funding. The GDP in these countries will be different from that of UK along with other economic factors. Perhaps, the revenues derived from these countries will help the college in surviving in the home market consequently. d. The name of Waltham Forest College will become a brand image in the international markets, Brazil, India, and Russia being the prominent ones. In this way, the reputation will be built in not only these countries but also the UK. To expand more and to give better prospects, the students in branches of Russia, Brazil and India will be offered opportunity to get transferred to UK branch, thus increasing the number of customers and migrants to UK. As mentioned before, Russia depends on international scholarships, the name of WFC will allow Russia to make the decision of offering scholarships in this college also. e. Cultural Development: Waltham will act as the bridge between UK and Russia, Brazil and India for exchange between cultures and ideas. 2. Disadvantages a. Entering the new market will be a challenge as other reputable institutes will already be present. Because, they need to provide good facilities and education. And the course fees and equipment everything will be suitable for local students. If they remain their course fee same
  • 11. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 11 | Page like as UK. So it too expensive. Because those country economic are not developed like UK. So most of the students are like to go other institute. b. Important practices will be stopped due to different laws and regulations of the international market or the new country. Such as, a student in Brazil has studied in the local campus of WFC and now he/she want to apply for higher education in UK. In this scenario, UKBA usually causes many difficulties for such students. Now, they will give the reason that they can still get the certificate provided from UK. c. If the country undergoes economic, political or other social issue, direct effects will be caused to Waltham, such as local anarchies, economic recession, and terrorist activities. d. A number of businesses fall down in international markets due to different language and inability to cope up with the new culture. Imagine a scenario where branches of Waltham Forest College are opened in cities of Mumbai and New Delhi in India. For first two years, the college stays put but is certainly in the struggling phase. After two years, Indian economy begins to suffer from high inflation, rising interest rates, and high unemployment. The outcomes on Waltham will vary. Since the inflation will be high, the college will have to decrease its fees otherwise students will move towards the local colleges. The interest rates were high, so more funding will be required, which is again a loss for the organization. The only positive aspect is the high unemployment. We will benefit from this as we can recruit employees on lower wages as well. Many other school, colleges, and universities, including Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Tata Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Milia Islami, and many more will already be present in city we are opening Waltham. Competing with these local, countries oldest, and reputable institutions will be difficult. Any social or political instability will turn out to be problematic for the English staff here, such as Mumbai Attacks of 2008. Task 4
  • 12. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 12 | Page The European Union is debating to pass a law that will increase the minimum wage per hour to £8.39p per hour. According from government the minimum wage from 1stOctober 2013 is: ● The minimum wage for adult per hour increased from £6.19 to £6.31 another below inflation rise, making the NMW worth less. ● For development rate for teenagers(18-20) went up from £4.98 to £5.03 ● For 16 to 17-year-olds it was increased from £3.68 to £3.72, up by 4p/hour ● For apprentice minimum wage rate went from £2.65 to just £2.68 per hour, up just 3p - all apprentices under the age of 19 and those aged 19 and over in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship. Now the European Union want increase the minimum wage from £6.31p to £8.39p. It will be a big step when they increase the minimum wage because by the UK current economy, the company cannot afford to pay that wage. So they will increase those things below. Rate of unemployment ● The number of people out of work fell by 125,000 to 2.34 million in the three months to December, according to the Office for National Statistics. ● The unemployment rate of the economically active population is now 7.2%, and the number of people in work is 30.15 million. ● The claimant count - the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance - fell by 27,600 to 1.22 million in January. If government keep increases the minimum wage to£8.39p per hour and the company cannot able to pay salary by maintain this wage for their staff, it will
  • 13. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 13 | Page increased the unemployment rate. Because the company does not have enough financial support for their new staff. Also they have to cut off their old staff, they can just keep any one is important in their company for reducing the company cost. So that is the main reason it will make the rate unemployment is gone up faster. So from the chart the rate of unemployment 2.3 million people in January 2014. But if government increase the minimum wage to £8.39p,so the company cannot afford for it. At a result the rate of unemployment after 6 month can begrown up 2.9 million people. Inflation ● The UK inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) fell to 1.9% in January from 2% the month before, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). ● It is the first time inflation has fallen below the Bank of England's 2% target rate in more than four years. ● The ONS said the lower inflation rate was in large part due to a fall in the cost of recreational and cultural activities, including falling DVD prices and lower entrance fees to attractions. ● While the Consumer Prices Index fell, the rate of Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation, which is calculated differently, increased slightly to 2.8% from 2.7%. So the rate of unemployment is gone up it will make the inflation rate go up too. So with the minimum wage is £8.39p, the value of it will go down? Because the president who does not have a job, will not have a lot money to buy everything. So it will have a huge impact to UK economy. From it every activity from government will have the delay because they cannot afford to pay for the staff and the value of their money is low. Also the TAX coming will going down by the high unemployment rate and the value of money is going down every month.
  • 14. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 14 | Page Interest rates ● The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept interest rates at the record low of 0.5% at its meeting in February. It also left the £375bn quantitative easing stimulus programme unchanged. ● But the continued fall in the UK unemployment rate, now at 7.1% has sparked a debate about when interest rates may need to rise. ● In August last year Bank Governor Mark Carney said that interest rates were unlikely to be raised before the jobless rate falls to 7%. ● But in mid-February he adjusted that stance, saying a wider range of indicators would be taken into account, meaning interest rates could remain at low levels for some time even as unemployment falls further. Also the interest rate of UK will going down too. Because the unemployment is high so the president does not have a job then they do not have enough money to cover their life and they do not have much money to put in the bank. By another hand, the company can get the benefit from it because they can get loan with lowest rate from bank. However, it still impact direct to government because they cannot control the value of money when the president using cash only. Exchange Rates: At the moment the exchange rate from GBP to USD is 1.6694. The minimum wage is gone and it makes the inflation rate is gone up. So the exchange rate of pound to another monetary will be going down. Example: after 6 month the inflation is go high, the value of money will going down. One traveller who live in US, want to travel in UK. When he exchanges his money from US to UK, he will get the best value for him because exchange rate in that time from GBP to USD is 0.9616. So he does not need to use lot money to exchange his USD to GBP.
  • 15. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 15 | Page Task 5 Waltham Forest College is located in North East London and is offers many vocational courses to the 14-19 year olds and adults. It was founded in 1936 and was removed from the control of the local authorities in 1992 and became an independent corporation, run under a Statutory Instrument (UK Government secondary legislation) known as the Instrument and Articles of Government (Waltham Forest College Alumni, Online). Currently, it is offering many courses to its students, such as business, management and accounting, English for speakers of other languages childcare, health and social care, computing and information technology (ICT), construction and electrical installation, automotive engineering, art and design fashion, hair and beauty care, catering and hospitality, public services, sport studies, teacher training and professional development, travel and tourism, and many more (Waltham Forest College, Online). It is a local company with no branches other main campus in the North East London. We can say that it falls under the secondary and tertiary business sectors as it does not extract anything but produces courses and educational contents, conducts events related to them, and provide educational and vocational services. Its vision is to “deliver responsive, outstanding teaching, learning and support to meet the needs of individuals and employers and inspire our students to develop the high quality skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their future lives” with the mission to “be the College of first choice for vocational excellence”. It is a non-stock corporation. It works with the corporate responsibility of respect, excellence, openness, fairness, teamwork, and success (Waltham Forest College, Online). The organization has many key legal responsibilities; consumer protection and customer service being the most important as it is an education institute and students they are teaching are the future of the country, thus being subjected to many laws, such as Consumer Protection Act 1986. They have to provide quality as well as legal and ethical education to the students. They have to train the students coming to them in such way that they become responsible and productive citizens of the society then.
  • 16. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 16 | Page Costa Coffee is a British multinational coffeehouse company with headquarters in Dunstable, UK. Also, it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Whitbread. It was founded by two brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa in 1971 and its current CEO of the company is Chris Rogers. According to the latest statistics, it is the second largest coffeehouse chain in the world after Starbucks and the largest in the United Kingdom (Costa Coffee, Online). It is a primary, secondary, and tertiary company. It extracts its own raw materials, produces the coffee and other items, and then offer services to its customers in their coffeehouses. It is a global company with 1,106 stores throughout the world in 30 countries (Costa Coffee UK, Online). The annual operating income of Costa Coffee is £340.9 million (WhitBread Annual Report, 2009) and it has no shares in the London stock market. The mission of Costa is “to save the world from mediocre coffee” with the vision to “be the best hospitality company that there is in each market in which they operate” (Costa Coffee, Online). Their objective is to excel from every coffee to the cup they provide to their customers. It has many legal responsibilities, diversity and equal approaches, and employment acts being the fundamental. This is because the company is found globally and in order to excel, it should make strategies that promote a sense of feeling and equality for all cultures. Also, employment acts should be totally legal and fair for all employees. Task 6 UK is the country with the fifth largest national economy in the world. The economic climate of UK has direct impact on Waltham College. The constant GDP have no prominent effects on the economy and financial outcomes. The employment rates, along with population trends, labor force, balance of payments and UL exchange rates will be directly proportional to the GDP of the country. There is no chance of recession and taxation will also vary according to the economic policies of the UK. During economic crisis, the fiscal policy of UK will be beneficial for Waltham College as taxation will be decreased which will eventually lead to increased saving and investment on the internal factors of the college. However, since this policy takes times in implementation and Waltham requires immediate funding, delay will lead to adverse effects. The monetary policy will play a role in keeping inflation low which will foster a stable price system. The outcomes of monetary policy are delayed, thus again delaying the financial matters. The Competition Act of 1998, that provides an updated framework for identifying and dealing with restrictive business practices and abuse of a dominant market position, has no influence on college as it is located in one city of UK only. Also, since this act is to harmonize between the UK and other
  • 17. Muktaderalishikdar 10063152 17 | Page European states and Waltham is located nowhere except for in England, Waltham is not affected by it. The Enterprise Act of 2002, stating regulations for the mergers between companies, presently has no effect on Waltham but will have major effects if it intends to expand to other countries or merge others. As it has no legal standing in other countries, it is only applicable in UK. If the organization intends to expand in other cities of United Kingdom, this Act will be applicable. The company will have to face from serious restrictions on land agreements, thus will increase the competition more. Also, it would have an impact both on realizations and on costs in corporate insolvency proceedings which will consequently accommodate in the introduction of the administration and company voluntary arrangement procedures. A similar situation occurred in 2010 for some grocery retailer companies of UK, including Asda, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury, etc. as they were required to assure that they will practice any restrictive covenants against the Competition Act or their license will be cancelled. Enterprise Act of 2002, working alongside with the Competition Act, has enabled in rescuing procedures during 2003, when some companies, such as British Airways were in the process of merging. Costa Coffee, being an international company, is not only affected from the economic climate of UK but also from that of other countries, GDP being the key player. The countries where this company is working tend to affect the factors in different ways. Population trends, labor force, employment rates, recession, inflation, balance of payments, and taxation vary according to the countries where franchises of Costa are located. Fiscal policy often doesn’t help in forecasting the outcomes and mistakes of the Costa but is crucial in controlling inflation rates. Since Costa is an international business, monetary policy provide political independence in implementation and practice of strategies and policies. However, conflict in goals creates issues for Costa. It must be noted here that multinational companies, including Costa Coffee, will have no effect on the inflation in UK with respect to the monetary policy. Competition Act will facilitate in harmonizing with franchises of other European states. Conclusion In this paper, we discussed the economic climate of the UK and what effects it has on the business environment of Waltham College and Costa Coffee.
