1. My success story in Hospitality:
I had taken over charge of IBIZA Club in June 2008 as a GM after I moved from Tea Plantation in Assam
to Kolkata.
It was a big challenge for me to change course midway after serving Tea Industry for 14 years. But,I took
this challenge to explore the world outside tea as there was nothing much to achieve in tea
professionally as I become estate Manager after 12 years of working as an Asstt Manager. Becoming
garden manager and running a garden independently is considered as big achievement. I was one of the
youngestManagersinthe entire industrythen.
I decided to shift to hospitality, as I was always passionate about resorts & hotels and love to visit and
explore luxury hotels & resorts whenever I get an opportunity and I consider hospitality industry as a
very creative industry. I was always confident of enjoying & contributing to hospitality industry with my
passionof properhousekeeping,interiordecoration,floriculture&gardeningandmeetingpeople.
As I took responsibility of Resort IBIZA,I was initially very confused as I didn’t have any experience of
managing hospitality business and the Kolkata city life & culture was also very new to me. Real Estate
the core businessof MerlinGroup.So,notmuch attention waspaidtowardshospitality then.
2008 being a recession year business was also very low. After lots of thinking & observing for 3 months, I
started opening the Club to select Corporate for their Conferences, get together, day parties etc. and
the business started growing. Then, we decided to change the name from IBIZA Club to Resort IBIZA and
started promoting IBIZA as a weekend destination through different media. Slowly, IBIZA was becoming
a popular destination for weekend getaway and business really started growing alongwith the increase
infootfall.
Then I approached the senior management of Merlin Group to upgrade IBIZA to a 5 star category resort
considering the potentiality and increasing response. It was decided immediately and we started
exploring Thailand to understand more about hospitality business and in the process we visited many
resorts in Phuket & Bangkok and also attended various Conferences on Hospitality in Singapore &
Thailand.
We had done networking with many hospitality consultants, professionals and established contact with
manyinternational hotelbrands.s
Finally we hired Architects & a Landscape designer from Bangkok and started working on upgradation of
ResortIBIZA.Laterwe alsohireda lightingconsultantfromAustralia.
We had built up a team of architects and designers back home also to work in consultation with the
international consultants.
We worked day & night for 4 years continuously to execute the project while keeping the resort in
operation. It was a very big challenge. However, we could achieve it by driving the team with the right
spirit& directionandmotivation.
2. Finally, we couldcomplete the projectand inauguratings itwithagrand weddingfunctioninJune 2014.
From a small Country Club, IBIZA is a 110 keys luxury Resort today and a most popular weekend
destinationandalsoaverypopularvenue forCorporate team building,Weddingandbigmusical events.
