The document discusses the STaR Chart, which is used in Texas to assess how effectively schools integrate technology according to the state's Long-Range Plan for Technology. The plan focuses on 4 key areas: 1) Teaching & Learning 2) Educator Preparation & Development 3) Leadership, Administration & Instructional Support and 4) Infrastructure for Technology. The STaR Chart measures schools' development in these areas on a scale from Early Tech to Advanced Tech. The document then provides sample data from Rick Schneider Middle School showing its progress in each area from 2006-2009.

The state legislature along with the State Board of Education and TEA see a vital need for the integration of technology into everyday instructional practices if we are going to effective prepare this and future generation of Americans for the world they are facing.
Each of these four areas acts as a major vein transporting blood and oxygen to the organs of the emerging education system.
Great emphasis is placed on a students need to become self directed and motivated all the while still having the instructional guidance to sift through mis-information.
Data shows that while staff developments are being provided teachers are requesting more time to experiment with the new integration practices before they are bogged down with a new practice to master. Do any of you ever feel this way in regards to technical integration on our campus?
The administrative team is the backbone to successful technology integration…if they are afraid of technology we will be limited, if they are uncomfortable with change then we will be limited, thank goodness we do not work with such administrators!
If a proper infrastructure is not in place it does not matter the amount of planning or intention, technology integration will not happen.
The key thing to remember here is that it starts at the bottom and works its way up. It is our goal, TEA’s goal, the ETAC’s goal that we will all reach the Target objective in all four areas of measure.
Over these three years we did a good job of maintaining our place, however, if we are ever going to provide our students what they so desperately need to compete in the global market we cannot, must not become satisfied with our current standings. Think of one thing you can go back and do to intensify your own instructional practice in regards to integration of technology, and then please apply it!
As you can see we have gained in areas, but we have also dipped in areas. Let it never be said of RSMS, “hey isn’t that the school that used to be progressive?”
Let’s not lose our heads…while we still are not making the gains in Teaching & Learning we would like to the data shows it is not due to lack of want. Evaluate the Progress Report for a better understanding of what these objectives are too look like when successfully met. I know this helped me tremendously in brainstorming my next steps in this process.
