Vogue (July 1963)(Conde Nast)

2018 example
Vogue was first issued in 1916 and over its 100 year + reign in the
magazine industry, the layout and format of the magazine hasn’t
really changed at all.
Here we see an example from 1963, with Sophia Loren on the front
cover, who was a popular sex symbol at the time.
On the second front cover from 2018, we see Margot Robbie, who
is also seen as an admirable model and actress.
The front cover has clearly stood the test of time as we can see that
the strapline has basically been left unchanged for all these years.
On the majority of Vogue covers over the years we have seen
many female figure heads take the spotlight.
The backbone of the magazine is the prestigious publisher, Conde
Nast, an American mass media company found in 1909.
Nast bought the magazine in 1905
They turned the focus of the magazine more towards women, and
In turn the price was soon raised.
By 1911, Vogue had gained a reputation that it still maintains to
this day targeting an elite audience.

History of Vogue
Vogue brand is said to be unique as they ‘rip up the fashion book and rewrite it’, as well as constantly
creating new ways to follow fashion (literally, with the use of mobile phone and PC)
The brand has changed over time as it seems to move with the time, like any good contextual magazine
would, it has always been up to date with recent affairs whilst still managing to put its on twist on things,
this is arguably the reason that it has reigned in the magazine industry for such a long period of time.
During the 60’s, fashion photography exploded and Vogue encouraged sex, freedom and equality as the
60’s were swinging and they were hosting the party. The space race was under way but before man could
even walk on the moon, British Vogue had imagined your wardrobe should you find yourself holidaying
in a lunar landscape.
