Background to EBCDA
o EBCDA is the 'umbrella organisation'
supporting community development in East
Belfast. Our membership is made up of
community groups drawn from an area that
contains almost 94,000 people.
o We use a community developed, health
framework with 5 themes: Healthy bodies,
Hearts, minds, relationships and
neighbourhoods
East Belfast Pop up People’s
Pharmacy
o The East Belfast People’s Pharmacy is a quirky initiative
aimed to raise awareness of health literacy using the
‘Take 5 steps to wellbeing’ health literature – Connect,
Be Active, Keep Learning, Take Notice and Give.
o EBCDA uses a community development approach to
health.
o The Pop up Pharmacy was inspired by ‘The Paper
Apothecary’ initiative run by The Happy Museums
Project. 1
o The project was a collaboration between EBCDA and
EastSide Arts.

East Belfast Pop up People’s
Pharmacy
o We wanted to raise awareness and understanding of the ‘Take
5’ health messages
o The project encouraged local people to create and contribute
pieces of art, craft and other small, meaningful items which
were collated in a purpose-built pharmacy. People who
visited the pharmacy received a 'social prescription' created
by another East Belfast individual or community group and
were signposted to local activities. This project aimed to
connect local individuals and community groups by working
together on a joint project that links health and arts in a fun
way.
Health Literature Used
The ‘Take 5 steps to wellbeing’ is a set of
evidence-based public health messages aimed
at improving the wellbeing of the whole
population, based on the Five Ways to
Wellbeing developed by the New Economics
Foundation (NEF) as the result of research
undertaken as part of the Foresight Project on
Mental Capital and Wellbeing. 1
NEF stated that if practised regularly the Five
Ways to Wellbeing will improve personal
wellbeing.2
The Pop up Pharmacy used the Northern
Ireland branding
1. Foresight Mental Capital and Wellbeing Project (2008). Final Project report. The Government Office for Science,
London
2. New Economics Foundation (NEF). (2008). Five Ways to Wellbeing: The evidence. London. NEF.
It is simple, accessible and achievable for
everyone.
Can make a difference individually, in a family,
at work and in the community .
It contributes to improved wellbeing, physically
and emotionally and provides connections to
local activities.
Enables and empowers participants to improve
their self-care.
Why we used the ‘Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing’?
Localising ‘Take 5’
o To aid the understanding of the ‘Take 5’ EBCDA added local examples:

Additional Impacts
o Those who prepared the artistic prescriptions told us how the process gave
them self worth.
o Those who received the ‘prescriptions’ expressed joy and appreciation
knowing that the gift had been made by someone they did not know.
o After the preview and the event, health professionals and community
leaders were inspired to use this approach to encourage more people to
understand and implement the ‘Take 5’ health messages.
o This initiative has been used by Belfast Health and Social Care trust Staff
and at other festivals.
o Healthy Living Centres regionally are exploring how to use this approach
for World Mental Health Day.
o Conversations have begun about how this initiative could be used to
identify carers or people living with dementia.
o EBCDA is exploring how to add more health information and diabetes risk
assessments.
