The West Midlands region is experiencing one of the most exciting periods of regeneration and development in recent times. Andy Street, West Midlands Mayor discussed his vision for the region, the importance of the real estate sector and why MIPIM is a ‘must go’ event for both public and private sector organisations in 2018.
The event was also an opportunity to learn about some of the key developments already underway across the region and details of how you can get involved in MIPIM 2018 as part of the Midlands UK delegation.

The world’s largest property investment event
24,000+ delegates, from 100+ countries
This is where the investment world comes once a year to assess the Real Estate market, evaluate the best investment opportunities and find new partners. Sovereign wealth funds; Pension companies and private investment houses – right across the spectrum, the world’s largest investors come to MIPIM to do business.
Naturally enough, with this investment money around, ALL the major European cities, regions and sometimes countries are here too - with an estimated 370 political leaders; showcasing their destination – through presentations, panel discussions, networking events or one to one private meetings in their pavilions, stands, or local hotels and restaurants.
…and of course, it’s also the #1 global destination for every private sector company involved in the RE sector. Nowhere else provides such an effective platform for networking, business development and the promotion of businesses, projects and services.

…and of course, it’s also the #1 global destination for every private sector company involved in the RE sector. Nowhere else provides such an effective platform for networking, business development and the promotion of businesses, projects and services.
I’m going to MIPIM to showcase the West Midlands: To personally communicate our vision and plans; to provide a clear economic / political context for our major investment opportunities – and to personally seek out top quality major investors who can help us accelerate the conversion of our plans into reality.
I was part of the Greater Birmingham delegation in 2016, in my role as Chair of the GBSLEP. The investor connections made and strengthened there are helping us bring our ambitious plans to fruition – so I know it works as an event. But as we also know, ‘success is a journey not a destination’ – and the process of finding and building investor relations is continuous.
Due to the Mayoral elections I wasn’t able to attend MIPIM in 2017, but the Midlands UK delegation held meetings with over 350 Investors either at MIPIM or directly as a result of exhibiting there.
Presenting a West Midlands view as part of a unified Midlands UK presence at MIPIM 2018 will only increase our scale and impact – and hence attraction to the investor community. So I’m a big fan of the partnership approach we are taking for MIPIM
The RE sector is one of our identified transformational sectors for the WM economy. But it also provides, quite literally, the foundations upon which every other sector is built. So, it’s critically important that we project our region effectively at MIPIM – that’s why I’m going.
But enough about me! What about you?
Well fairly obviously, given what I’ve just said, one of the reasons I’d like you to consider coming to MIPIM as part of our delegation is because I want your support in promoting this great region of ours to the national and international investor community. That is partly about money – creating the right scale and quality of presence at MIPIM is an expensive business – and in addition to both central and local government investment, we look to our commercial partners to help share the cost, in return for a well defined and valuable range of benefits.
But it’s also about the intangible support that private sector RE experts like you bring, that is important to our presence at MIPIM. You all have different skills, experiences and perspectives on what makes the Midlands – and West Midlands in particular, a world class destination for investment. There is no doubt that our presence and key messages will be amplified greatly by each additional commercial partner who comes with us to MIPIM.
But most of all, the main reason I believe you should invest some time and money in being a Midlands Commercial Partner is to build your own business. Whether you are a developer, architect, contractor, project manager, lawyer or other service provider to the RE sector, I have little doubt that MIPIM presents one of the best business development opportunities of the year. One of the most exciting aspects of MIPIM each year is spending 3 or 4 really focused, intensive days working with private sector RE experts from across the Midlands – sharing ideas; strengthening our working relationships; creating opportunities – doing business.
TO AMEND, SEE BELOW You’ll hear from Jon Derry a little later on how you can get involved with the MIPIM Partnership programme. But as I hand you over to Neil Rami, I’m going to play a short video about our presence at MIPIM – and leave you with one really simple, but important thought:
If you work in the Midlands’ RE sector and MIPIM 2018 is not yet in your diary – it should be.
RECOMMEDED AMEND FROM WMGC: “Just to give you a flavour of the exciting changes coming to the region, I’ll hand over to Neil” (The video will be played after Neil)
