The music video depicts the kidnapping, torture, and murder of British children's TV host Pat Sharp by the band The Shinies. Through dark imagery and lighting, the video represents the band members' longing to return to their carefree childhoods. Flashbacks shown in an old film style portray happy memories of Sharp entertaining them as kids. Forcing him to dance represents trying to recapture the past. The contrasting video formats symbolize how their childhood memories have been dragged into a bleaker present. Killing Sharp, who embodied the fun of their youth, signifies the death of their innocence. The video aimed to convey the negatives of aging but was misinterpreted as a malicious attack on Pat Sharp.

4. Peach Pit is a Canadian band from Vancouver, British
Columbia. Band members are bassistPeter Wilton,
guitarist Christopher Vanderkooy, drummer Mikey
Pascuzzi, and vocalist/guitarist Neil Smith. Their first
EP "Sweet F.A" was laden with fouroriginal songs, and
the current release (as of September 2017) of 3
accompanyingmusic videos. Most importantly the
video to the track "seventeen" which will be subject
to my analysis today.

5. Lighting: Thelighting in this music video demonstrates thecommon
genrecharacteristics of indieand alternativemusic, for examplethe
dark and moody lighting arecommontraitsfound throughoutthese
music videos, theseconventionsareused as a signifier showing the
generic conventionsof nihilistic and generally negativelyrics and
attitudes. However thistends to becontrasted with 'wacky' visuals
regarding themain performanceand acting. Themusic also contradicts
thelighting through bright guitarsand a 'happy' major key showing the
contrast of lyrics between composition which is then paralleled with the
contrast of lighting and dancingin themusic video.
Performance: As I put in theprevious analysis theperformanceis
contrasted completely with thelighting. Thedancing follows thewaves
and fluidic motions of themusic however contrasts thenegativelyrical
content and thedark moody lighting within themusic video. The
dancing is also always performed with deadpan facial expressions,
again showing theconventionallacking of enthusiasm foundwithin the
alternativegenreconventions.

6. Styling: Every Peach Pit music video off thisEP followsthe same stylingof the
yellowt-shirt, beige chinos and a purple jumper. This continuity amongst the
music video's adds an extra level to the complete narrative of the EP and music
allowingthe audience to relate everythingthat has happened to the singer in
all previoussongs to this piece as well.This overarching narrative allowsthe
audience to emphasize with the main character and allows them to feel
familiar with the continuity.Styling can also include settingunder it's wing. The
setting of this music video followsa very nostalgic there, as a way of showing
the audience where the main character spent his time when he was
'seventeen',this also shows the degradation of these things he once lovedand
how empty and lonelythey have become. This nostalgic setting brings us to a
filmrental showingthe emptinessand how things he once loved are
disappearing even through hisfond memories.
Editing: The editingin this music video isvery simple and basic, this could be a
nod to the simplisticeditingthat fillsindie music video's,the arrangement of
cuts in no specific order also showing the no care come as it isattitude given
as youth and how he is still clingingonto his youth unlike everyone else
shown by the empty buildings.The longs cuts on each shot could also be a
way of showing how laborious and how hard everything is in adulthood, the
mundane tasks become an everyday and you try your best to cling to the little
things.

8. The Shinies are a Manchester based melodic guitar-pop band
who released their debut album in 2015. The band attracted
a lot of negative attention from their album as a result of the
music video for the single 'Ennui' as it depicted the
kidnapping, torture and murder of child entertainment host
Pat Sharp. This attempt to show through their music video
the negatives of aging and the longing for childhood was then
misinterpreted by certain audiences and newspapers to me a
malicious attack upon the 'national treasure' Pat Sharp.

throughviolence.PatSharp,the final image of theirchildhoodtheyrecognize is
shownbeingtorturedandeventuallykilledonafuneral pyre.Thissymbolism

screamingintothe bleakrealityof modernday.PatSharprepresentssomuchof
whatwas funaboutbeingyounginthe 80's and 90's. Withhiscleancutimage and
iconichaircut,he wasthe perfectcandidate tohelpturn happymemoriesinto
nightmarishreality.
Lighting: The lighting in this video is an even more extreme
example of dark shadowy lighting reflecting the music in the
video, dark and grungy lighting is used throughout. This is
also a smart way of dealing with the confined budget that
restricted the band, cheap to light and extremely effective
emotionally. This connect with the audience makes the video
even more emotive. The correlation between the visuals of
the lighting and the dark sound is obviously apparent and in
effect heightens the drama of the video.

10. Editing: Theediting in this video is purposefullynostalgic, constantly
switching from 4:3 to 16:9 showing thechangebetween decades and
periods of their life. Happy memories harefilmed in an old super 8mm
film style, likewhen they forcePat to dancefor them. The memories
they relivearedistant from their childhood and can only berelived
through homevideos they madeas children. Theresolution change
however shows that they havebeen brought into thefutureand the
darker effect it has upon them. The morecinematic resolution sells the
dramatic effect portrayed through thevisuals. Theuseof closeups is an
integral part of most music video's, you can seetheemotion on the
actors faces and it shows how insanethey havebecome, unableto
adjust to thepresent day.
Styling: The styling in this music video has a large contrast,
you have the worn out outcast and grungy style off the band
members showing their degradation in society and how they
are going against the social norms. Pat is shown to be quite
raggedy and to have fallen from grace. Yet they give him
clothes and dress him up to try and recreate the love they
felt for him in the past, the mullet and denim jacket was a
staple piece of the 80's and forcing him into it shows their
longing for their childhood back
