2. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS
Love is a reoccurring theme in the
novel A Thousand Splendid suns
by Khaled Hosseini.
The main character Mariam has
lived a life of short lived love and
aggressive comments and is
married away by her father after
her mother had commited suicide
Mariam’s married life started off
fine but everything collapsed after
she continued to have
miscarriages
Laila, their young neighbor, is
taken in by Mariam’s husband
Rasheed as second wife
Laila and Mariam at first were very
bitter towards each other but
realized they needed each other’s
support and love desperately
3.
Laila and Mariam love
each other and are very
devoted to each other
and support each other
Their love for each other
and Laila’s children are
what hold them during
their husband
Rasheed’s never ending
abuse
If they had never
learned to love each
other they probably
wouldn’t have survived
living with Rasheed and
Laila would have never
been able to be with
Tariq again
4.
After Laila found out
Mariam had killed
Rasheed she begged
Mariam not to turn
herself in. “We’ll take
care for each other,” Laila
said…”Like you said. No
I’ll take care of you for a
change.” (p. 318)
Mariam knew she
couldn’t fulfill Laila’s wish
to run away with her and
instead told Laila to say
goodbye to the children
for her. “Kiss Aziza for
me,” She said. “Tell her
she is noor of my eyes
and the sultan for my
heart.” (p. 320)
5. EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE
A young boy named
Oskar is left feeling empty
and broken after his father
dies in the twin-tower
incident during 9/11
Family is Oskar’s entire
world and Oskar is his
grandmother’s entire
world.
Despite Oskar’s childish
mistreatment to his
grandmother, she loves
him with her entire being
6.
Oskar spends the entire
story trying to find any last
connection he can get to
his father and in the
meantime his grandma
struggles with her own
internal conflicts as she
tells him her story
Oskar is constantly
reminded of her love for
him and how important he
is to her and although he
takes it for granted
sometimes he knows he
can’t handle the idea of it
disappearing since it’s one
of the only things keeping
him together through his
emotional turmoil
7. Oskar’s grandma told
him “I hope you never
think about anything
as much as I think
about you” (p. 224).
“I wanted to say
them, He’s mine. I
wanted to stand up
and shout, That
beautiful person is
mine! Mine!” (p. 79).
8. Laila and Mariam’s unquestioned love for
each other and the kids helped them
escape from an abusive and painful lifestyle
and Oskar’s grandmother’s unshakeable
love and devotion to Oskar helped him stay
on his feet after his father died. Everyone’s
love overcame all their troubles and helped
them through the worst of their times and
towards a new future.
