 Started in 1870’s
 They were known as the care givers of the destitute
 They were involved in providing relief to the poor and giving education to all
classes
 Volunteers and Reps
 Instruction for the poor through friendly visitors
 The movement became influenced by social Darwinism and
counterproductively

3. Settlement Houses
 Began in 1880’s
 Set in immigrant neighborhoods by the wealthy, upper class, and college
students
 Tried to organize the poor neighborhoods
 Jane Adams

4. Progressive movement
 1890’s
 Birth of term social welfare and social workers
 Belief of government involvement for social welfare, emphasis on ethics in
business and personal life, and committed to social justice
 The state is responsible for the public
