2. Process
First I drew out a grid that would form the map, I Made it in
ProCreate, an app for the Ipad. I find it easier using ProCreate. I
used the ruler tool to make sure the lines were straight. The
reason I made a grid was because I wanted an Orhographic view
for my game
I then improved the grid so I could draw 3D elements onto the grid.
The Grid gives me a better sense of what im working with so I can
draw the 3D elements (such as walls) with my pen on my ipad
I used the grid to draw the shuttle that I would be using for
my game. Using the grid helped me work out the angles and
how it would work as an extension of the maps
3. Process
I improved design of the shuttle continuing using
ProCreate on my Ipad to make it more detailed so I
could use it in the game if I wanted. I changed the
colours and added more detail so it was more suitable
for my experiment
I created a map around the ship using the grid I used
before, then kept the grid so it resembled chess, I
added cover for the characters who would be fighting
to enhance the game combat to make it more about
strategy
I then designed the ghost exterminators and the basic
enemy, I also designed the multiple choice selection bar,
taking inspirations from Mass Effect and Knights of the
Old Republic. The Ghost Exterminators are a group of
people who are payed to go hunt ghosts who creep onto
starships. I wanted to make them customizable but
unfortunately it would take too long to design and the
pixel design is too small to do much customization anyway
4. When I started the animation I loaded all the images into
photoshop, I then started a keyframe animation where each
frame i moved one of the images and changed them to look like
they were walking by moving each sprite. I added effects such
as lasers and text dialogue (when the text was on screen I had
to change the FPS so the text was readable), the combat is turn
based so after one side makes a move so does the other like
chess.
Creating each sprite in individual layers allowed me to move
and edit them individually more easily
The combination of PC Photoshop and Ipad ProCreate allowed
me to draw more fluently with a stylus as if I was drawing on
paper than compared to other computer tools like a mouse
The file format I used for sharing through email were .PSD files
which allowed me to transfer everything I made in multiple
transparent lays all in one file rather than sending them all as
multiple .PNG Files which would have taken a lot longer to
transfer
The email worked as a dropbox where I could transfer my work
5. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
– Turn Based Gameplay
– Grid Map
– PSD file Transfer from device to computer through email
– Creating the game with photoshop on PC and ProCreate on my Ipad
– Dialog options
– 3D like environments
– Critical reflection on workflow and toolset difference
6. •Refer to the brief: Ghost Game
In the initial lecture I found I had to create a ghost
game. When I first heard of this my first ideas
were Western ghosts in space with ghosts (a turn
based strategy game In the style of XCOM UFO
DEFENCE), A farm building game where you had
to defend against attacking ghost zombies,
“Ghosts of the souls of the people who play call of
duty” and “space ghosts in space”. I eventually
settled with the first mentioned idea, but I
removed the western part and kept the space
turn based strategy game elements when i
researched with this I found that a lot of popular
games use dalogue trees such as games like mass
effects so i decided to add a dailogue option. I
then looked into the orgional Xcom games and
even though it was 2D pixal image they managed
to make it look like a top down veiw of the
battlefeild as they battled so i added that too.
When it came to the experiments i found a lot of
theses are possible but some of them might be
dificult to do some aspects, such as the dialog
tree, the turn based gameplay, the visual shooting
effects but i believe i can manage it within the
time given to complete this project
