Jamsetji Tata
Jamsetji Tata was more than just the entrepreneur
who helped India take her place in the league of
industrialised nations. He was a patriot and a
humanist whose ideals and vision shaped an
exceptional business conglomerate.

Born on March 3, 1839 ,in Gujarat, first child and only son
of Nusserwanji Tata, a family of Parsee priests.
Graduated in 1858 from Elphinstone college, Bombay.
At Age of 20, 1859 Jamsetji joined the small firm that his
father, a merchant and banker, ran.
In 1868 , aged 29 Jamsetji started a trading company
with a capital of Rs21,000. Also went to England where
he learnt about textile business.
In 1869 , acquired a bankrupt oil mill in the industrial
heart of Bombay, renamed it Alexandra Mill and
converted it into a cotton mill.
In 1871 , sold the mill for a significant profit to a local
cotton merchant. And Again went to England to study
Lancashire cotton trade.

The Mills Of Change… He factored three crucial points into his plans:
- Close proximity to cotton-growing areas,
- Easy access to a railway junction,
- Plentiful supplies of water and fuel.
In 1874 , Jamsetji floated a fresh enterprise, the
Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing
Company, with a seed capital of Rs1.5 lakh.
Three years later, On January 1, 1877, the Empress
Mills came into existence in Nagpur. At the age of 37,
Jamsetji had embarked on the first of his fantastic
odysseys.
It was at Empress Mills that Jamsetji pioneered worker
welfare initiatives, unheard of at the time

From about 1880 to his death in 1904, Jamsetji was consumed by what
has to be the three great ideas of his life: setting up an iron and steel
company, generating hydroelectric power, and creating a world-class
educational institution that would tutor Indians in the sciences. None of
these would materialise while Jamsetji lived, but the seeds he laid, the
work he did and the force of will he displayed in fulfilling this triumvirate of
his dreams ensured they would find glorious expression.

HIS JOURNEY
1962: Joined the Tata Group.
1971: He was appointed as the Director-in-charge of the National Radio & Electronics Co. Ltd.
1972-1975:NELCO grew up and wiped out its losses. But under the state of emergency the demand for
consumer goods slumped which led to union problems.
1977: The lock out was imposed for 7 months and the venture did not survive.
1977: Ratan Tata was entrusted with the Empress mill.
1981: Ratan Tata was named as the Chairman of Tata industries, groups and the holding companies.
1986: The mill got closed due to some problems.
1991: He took over as a group chairman from Mr. J R D Tata.
1998: The Tata Indica, the conglomerate's first passenger car, was launched this year. The car went on to
become the No. 1 brand in its segment within two years.
2000: Tata Tea, now Tata Global Beverages, acquired the Tetley group, the world's second largest
manufacturer and distributor of tea.
16. 2001: Tata AIG, a joint venture between the Tata group and American International Group
Inc (AIG), marks the re-entry of the Tata group into the insurance sector.
2002: The group acquires a controlling stake in Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. VSNL was
founded in 1986 and was the first Indian PSU to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
2003: Tata Consultancy Services became the first Indian software company to cross $1
billion in revenue. The company went public a year later.
2004: Tata Motors is listed on the NYSE. The company also acquires the heavy vehicles
unit of Daewoo motors the same year.
2007: Tata Steel successfully acquires Anglo-Dutch company Corus, the second-largest steel
maker in Europe.
2007: Tata four wheeler Tata elegante was launched.
2008: The smallest car Nano was launched costing Rs.1 lakhs.
2008: Tata Motors acquires the Jaguar and Land Rover businesses from Ford, and forms a
new company, Jaguar Land Rover.
2012: Tata Global Beverages and Starbucks form a joint venture, Tata Starbucks Ltd, and
open their first store in Mumbai.
2012 : Stepped down as the Chairman of Tata Group at the age of 75.

➢ .Jamsetji Tata, the Founder of the Tata group, exemplified selflessness in the business world by
setting up the JN Tata Endowment for the higher education of Indians in 1892. Over the years,
several Tata companies have been focusing on the social business initiative, which is designed
for and defined by its social purpose — education, healthcare, nutrition, and so forth.
➢ Tata Group has always believed in the power of social contributions. it gives 65% of its income
to charity. Every Diwali, Tata contributes almost 1000 crores or more to cancer patients.
During the covid pandemic, Tata donated 1,500 crores to support the country in its fight
against COVID-19.
➢ Tata Sons in association with the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) started the
Tata Social Enterprise Challenge in 2012. The competition aims to encourage young social
