I HAVE A PLAN!
We were all asked this when we were kids.
So, What was your answer?
mine was a Math Teacher and then someday a Professor of Mathematics.
When did that change?
Do people really know what they want to be?
Do you have to set goals when you are young?
Do those goals change over time?
You can google that question and quickly get many sites that offer advice.
Here are a few that stuck out to me and some notes from them.
MIT’s Career Planing site
1 - examine your interests, skills, values
2 - what is most important
3 - compare promising options
4 - is this field in demand, can I make money?
5 - choose the one best for you
6 - Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time bound
7 - create specific steps to get there
8 - meet with someone who can help you
Craven Community College Career planing site
many colleges have similar sites with basically the same steps.

Think about where you’re going and then communicate
Find advocates
Challenge yourself, but remain authentic
build confidence
Let go of perfectionism
we need to create opportunities to learn X and gain experience in Y to get to position Z
over most of my life this is how I felt about my career
sometimes it seemed that nothing went as I planned.
Then, a couple of friends and I read this book. That’s when the light bulb came on.
So how do you plan your career/life?
First of all you don’t have to do it by yourself. It’s ok to ask for help
First, figure out what things in your life you can’t control
Health Issues for example (like knee surgery)
What things can I control?
Focus on the things you can control
Your choices, for example
Write down what you do each day and make note:
Why are you doing the things you are doing?
What makes it worthwhile?
What gives you energy?
What do you look forward to?
What drains you?
What activities do you loathe?
Where can you find these people?
Ask people you are already acquainted with what they do
Attend a new meet up
ask people here at the conference
Why do they do what they do?
What does the job really involve?
What do they like?
What do they hate?
Why do they do what they do?
What does the job really involve?
What do they like?
What do they hate?
At least once a year do this all over again
Do it more often if you become unhappy
What do you want out of life?
