2. Joshua and Caleb, who were among those
who had explored the land, said to the entire
Israelite assembly, "The land we passed
through and explored is exceedingly good. If
the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us
into that land, a land flowing with milk and
honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel
against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the
people of the land, because we will swallow
them up. Their protection is gone, but the
LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them."
But the whole assembly talked about stoning
them. Num 14:6-10
3. Don’t allow failure to stop you
from leading
Joshua’s first experience as a
leader for Israel was unsuccessful
Positional leadership is seldom
enough to lead
4. And when many disasters and
difficulties come upon them, this song
will testify against them, because it
will not be forgotten by their
descendants. I know what they are
disposed to do, even before I bring
them into the land I promised them on
oath." So Moses wrote down this
song that day and taught it to the
Israelites. Deut 31:21,22
5. Learn from leaders who are farther
along than you in leadership
We completely destroyed them, as we had
done with Sihon king of Heshbon,
destroying every city—men, women and
children. But all the livestock and the
plunder from their cities we carried off for
ourselves. Deut 3:6,7
The Hebrew term destroyed and
destroying refers to the irrevocable giving
over of things or persons to the LORD,
often by totally destroying them.
6. Leadership is caught, not just taught
Leadership is more than a set of
principles: it is a heart which can
only be learned up close by
experience
Find living examples
Learn from others so you don’t have
to go through everything yourself
7. Create lasting influence
Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of
Jephunneh, who were among those who
had explored the land, tore their clothes
You can’t lead without influence
Without it you lack credibility
You lack believability
Lasting influence takes time
8. Lasting influence
Itdoesn’t come because of
personality or position it comes
from character, consistency,
commitment and care.
10. But if serving the LORD seems
undesirable to you, then choose
for yourselves this day whom you
will serve, whether the gods your
forefathers served beyond the
River, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land you are
living. But as for me and my
household, we will serve the
LORD."
11. Make lifelong commitments
Find what’s worth living for and stick
to it
Discover your non-negotiable values
Stay within the boundaries of your
giftedness
Commitment to everything creates
frustration, commitment to a few
things creates faith
14. Respond to mistakes positively
Three days after they made the treaty with
the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that
they were neighbors, living near them.
