Food Science And Technology
■ Food science is the application of the basic sciences and engineering to
study the fundamental physical, chemical, biochemical nature of foods and
the principals of processing.
■ Food is any substance that, when ingested, usually will supply nutrients that nourish
the body.
■ Nutrients are the constituents of food i.e. Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids, Vitamins,
Minerals and Water.
■ Processing involves any operation that will alter the value of food in order to
enhance: shelf life, consumer acceptance and nutrient load

Disciplines in FST
■ Though it is part of agricultural sciences but FST itself is a huge field and is linked
with many disciplines
■ A good food technologist must have knowledge of these disciplines but
unfortunately not all the institutes are providing real time knowledge of these all and
infact while doing job not everything needs to be remembered. It is time your
interest and trainings that make you enable to grip on specific area.

Current Scenario

Salary Range
■ 18k – 50k
■ Avg salary – 23-25k
■ 50k (very rare now a days for fresh graduates)
■ For a diploma holder avg starting salary in 15k as per my observation

Universities offering FST
■ ALMOST 40 in Pakistan
■ Huge saturation ahead like MBA degree

My Recommendation
■ Only join FT if you are really passionate about it or you have some reference and
background that can support you,
■ Otherwise it will be problematic for those students who just join FT on someone’s
recommendation irrespective of their own interest
■ Scope depend upon you
■ It is better to follow you interest rather than following people
■ I put my best to clarify the scope rest upon you. Compare it with other disciplines in
agriculture and choose the best major according to yourself.
■ Market is really saturated and low salaries are being paid to fresh graduates.

Remeber
■ For those who want to opt fst after fsc I still prefer doing ft instead of zoology botony
biotechnology, biochemistry and chemistry.
■ Find your interest, instead of following people. that’s it.
■ Surf the internet too while going to any final decision
