HOW THE SURVEYS ON SCHOOL READINESS WERE CONDUCTED AND
RESPONSE RATE
• All 3 surveys were completed online
• The survey was sent to all members, but only principals were asked to submit a response.
• The replies of those who indicated they were not principals were omitted from the analysis.
• SURVEY 1 was completed between 16th and 18th May.
• A total of 9 365 complete responses were received (±40% of schools)
• SURVEY 2 was completed on 29 May.
• A total of 6 616 complete responses were received (±29% of schools). The 24-hour response
period resulted in fewer responses.
• SURVEY 3 was completed between on 5th June.
• A total of 5500 complete responses were received (24% of schools)
• SURVEY 4 was completed between on 5th June.
• A total of 5293 complete responses were received (±23% of schools

REVIEW OF OPENING OF SCHOOL OPENING
NATIONALLY & PROVINCIALLY
• Schools have not opened evenly, half-of our schools do not currently have a full
staff complement, and many learners are not attending school
• Schools opened unevenly across the country
• Approximately 4% schools nationally have not yet opened
• Approximately 8% schools nationally were closed due to non-compliance
• Approximately 10% schools nationally were closed for a period due to a
COVID case (45% for 5 days or more)
• As many as 47% of schools nationally do not haver a full teaching
complement because 10-20% of teachers are not reporting because of
comorbidities
• Is as many as 30% of schools nationally, up to 10% of learners are being kept
kept at home because of parental concern

• PROVISION:
• In only 5 provinces have sufficient sanitizers been delivered so that all learners and
teachers at schools can NOW sanitize their hands frequently during the day
• In only 2 provinces have sufficient sanitizers been delivered so that all learners and
teachers at schools can sanitize their hands frequently during the day when the next
grades return on 6th July
• SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN PLACE TO USE HAND SANITISERS
• In only 2 Provinces have systems in place been put in place for every person entering
a classroom NOW to wash with soap and water or sanitize their hands, and again
when leaving the classroom, and to dry hands their hands, with used paper towels
discarded in a litter bin with a lid
• In NO Provinces will systems be in place in place for every person entering a
classroom NOW to wash with soap and water or sanitize their hands, and again when
leaving the classroom, and to dry hands their hands, with used paper towels
discarded in a litter bin with a lid when the next grades return on 6th July

• In 7 provinces, more than 80% of schools have been able to provide water and soap in
the sanitation facilities at the school NOW
• In only 1 province will more than 80% of schools be able to provide additional water and
soap in the sanitation facilities at the school when the next grades return on 6th July
• SCHOOL SYSTEMS TO MONITOR AND REPLENISH SOAP IN SANITATION
FACILITIES
• In 4 Provinces, there is currently a system for the soap to be monitored and replenished
during the day in more than 80% of schools
• In only 2 Provinces, will there be a system for the soap to be monitored and replenished
during the day in more than 80% of schools when the next grades return on 6th July
• SCHOOL SYSTEMS TO WASH HANDS IN SANITATION FACILITIES
• In ALL provinces currently, less than74% of schools currently have systems and resources
for every person leaving a bathroom to wash their hands, to dry hands with paper towels,
and to discard the paper into a litter bin with a lid, and lined with a bin liner
• In 4 provinces, less than 50% of schools will have systems and resources for every person
leaving a bathroom to wash their hands, to dry hands with paper towels, and to discard
the paper into a litter bin with a lid, and lined with a bin liner When the next grades
return on 6th July, and in no province will more that 62% of schools be able to do so

between learners in classrooms
• In 8 provinces less than 54% of schools have subject teams or phase teams
been able to meet and reviewed the curriculum guidance received from
national and province for the returning grades
• In 8 provinces less than 48% of schools have all subject teams or phase
teams planned their teaching for the returning grades in terms of the
curriculum guidance received for the returning grades
• In only 1 province have more than 40% of schools have all subject teams or
phase teams planned for what work learners will need to do at home
when not in school for the returning grades?

Survey on readiness of schools for the second phase of reopening of schools

  • 1. NATIONAL SCHOOL READINESS SURVEY PROGRESS REPORTS (1) 18th May 2020: Principals’ Baseline Survey (2) 29th May 2020: Monitoring Progress (3) 5th June 2020: Monitoring Progress (4) 29th June 2020: Monitoring Progress and assessing readiness for 6 July

HOW THE SURVEYS ON SCHOOL READINESS WERE CONDUCTED AND RESPONSE RATE • All 3 surveys were completed online • The survey was sent to all members, but only principals were asked to submit a response. • The replies of those who indicated they were not principals were omitted from the analysis. • SURVEY 1 was completed between 16th and 18th May. • A total of 9 365 complete responses were received (±40% of schools) • SURVEY 2 was completed on 29 May. • A total of 6 616 complete responses were received (±29% of schools). The 24-hour response period resulted in fewer responses. • SURVEY 3 was completed between on 5th June. • A total of 5500 complete responses were received (24% of schools) • SURVEY 4 was completed between on 5th June. • A total of 5293 complete responses were received (±23% of schools

REVIEW OF OPENING OF SCHOOL OPENING NATIONALLY & PROVINCIALLY • Schools have not opened evenly, half-of our schools do not currently have a full staff complement, and many learners are not attending school • Schools opened unevenly across the country • Approximately 4% schools nationally have not yet opened • Approximately 8% schools nationally were closed due to non-compliance • Approximately 10% schools nationally were closed for a period due to a COVID case (45% for 5 days or more) • As many as 47% of schools nationally do not haver a full teaching complement because 10-20% of teachers are not reporting because of comorbidities • Is as many as 30% of schools nationally, up to 10% of learners are being kept kept at home because of parental concern • See Table on next page for figures and provincial comparisons
