1. For this task we need to create two promotional characters, one for Glastonbury music festival and one for
The BBC proms classical music festival. This task is all about understanding and developing skills in the
number of techniques and processes that are involved in creative advertising as they are essential to our
progress. within this brief we will mainly be looking at developing our knowledge in illustration and who you
bring people in to create the advert that we want, such as hiring illustrators. To help us broaden or
knowledge of illustration styles we took part in two tasks, one evaluating four different illustrations so that we
could get an understanding of how our work could possibly be viewed and also to give us an understanding
of some of the different illustration styles that there are. the second task was to create six drawings
representing different expressions...
A young girl waving the british flag represents a patriotic nature and a friendly environment. The symbolizes
the fact that the proms are relevant to all ages with acts such as Dr Who and child work shops. I don’t feel
that this character works well as I feel it comes across as to child like and I want it to appeal to everyone. If I
were to work into this character I would develop it so that it somehow became more relevant to everyone.
The panda playing the flute represents a peaceful and care environment. In ancient China it was believed
that Panda’s were special, old Chinese books show giant pandas with mystical powers with the belief that
they could ward off evil spirits and natural disasters. In todays world it is believed that pandas can be
represented as a symbol f peace and good fortune. I feel that this character works well as it shows that the
Proms is a friendly place which welcomes in anyone that is interested in classical music the phrase ‘‘like a
panda’’ symbolizes curiousness, kindness, sensitivity and playfulness all of which I feel the proms represents
in different performances throughout the 8 week period. If i was to develop this character I wold possibly play
around with the instrument its playing and also change the way the panda is sitting to see if it would look
better either turned left or sitting down. However due to time progression I would have to look up illustrators
and adapt it to there style as a means of development.
I adapted Britannia so that she could be used as a means of representing the proms. Here you can witness
her holing a cello apposed to her usual staff. Britannia is an ancient term from “Great Britian” which
symbolizes a female personification of the Island. Although I like the history behind this image I feel that it is
too patriotic for it to be used as a character for the proms as I get the feeling that I could be mistaken that
they are aimed at upper classes. However this was not my intention, when looking back I do feel that there is
a lot of elegance within this image and could possibly be misread as snobbery.
Again with the patriotic theme, when I thought of the idea in my head of one of the Queens guard's marching
playing an instrument did seem like a good idea, however when it comes to putting pen on paper I feel that I
do not get the accessible message I want to get across. Its too formal and patriotic. I also feel that this
character some across as slightly boring I don’t think I will go on to develop this character further.
Here we have a image of an abstract penguin playing the violin. I chose to use a penguin because, when
speaking on symbolic terms they often represent both he important bond of families, especially between
parent and child and the belief that the impossible can be overcome. I feel that this symbolism is ideal for the
message I am trying to put across. The proms is and always has been a family show, a show put together to
bring people together through classical music. I also feel that the nature in which I have created this
character appeals to everyone, although abstract I feel that this character has a class of elegance and
formality to it with I think adults could relate to. However the style in which it has been drawn is very simple
and slightly child like therefore I feel that it could appeal to children as well. I will definitely be using this
character in the future.
2. We see a child imitating a musical conductor. inspired by the film August Rust, where an orphaned
musical prodigy uses his gift as a clue to finding his birth parents. I wanted this image. I wanted to
appeal to parents to inspire there child musically, and to hopefully make children think “i could do that” I
feel that this image is not as powerful as I had first hoped, however I feel that possibly if I researched
and found the right illustrator to adapt my work this character could work.
This was just a quick doodle of a cello thats came to life, after spouting arms and legs. I suprisingly like
this character as it is simple and fun. However I feel that at the moment the way it is, it appeals more to
children then it does to adults, I feel that I will use this as one of my three characters and look for
illustrators that could possible make this image more appealing to adults.
GLASTONBURY
Here we have a mime playing the air guitar, I chose to use a mime to show how diverse Glastonbury is
with something for everyone, from the stages to an actually circus and theatre to a green field selling
herbal medicines and such going back to its original hippy routes. I feel that this image does not do the
festival justice as it does not really explain what the festival is really about. I don’t think I will go on to
develop this character further.
When I thought of this idea I thought about tents, clothes luggage ect. and wanted a unique way over
carrying it. here we see what looks like a stalk carrying a baby, however it carrying luggage for
Glastonbury whilst listening to music on his headphones. I feel that this image does not work at all as
because it is not clear what I am actually trying to show and is automatically portrayed and a stalk and a
baby. I also feel that I will not go onto carry on developing this character either.
I decided to use a dove for this character development. i chose to use a dove as A dove with an olive
branch is a symbol of peace the world over. I have seen doves interpreted variously as love, peace,
gentleness, marriage, a general all round good omen, depending on where they are seen. I feel this that
a dove could work well with the theme of Glastonbury as the symbolism surrounding the bird is in
keeping with the spirit of the festival. I will look at some illustrators to see if I can develop this character
more.
Here we have a north american tribal worrier attending glastonbury, I chose to use such a character to
symbolize the diverse amount of people that attend the festival on a regular basis. In a way I suppose
the traditional tribal character kind of merges with the tone of the festival, basically I mean that the
people attending it will technical be going back to basics by sleeping in tents ect. I don’t feel that this
character is strong enough to try to develop further I feel that it is too far off brief to continue.
I feel that Glastonbury has an overall feeling of relaxation and calming. Here we see a little money
relaxing listening to music. I chose to use a baby monkey to represent the freedom the festival gives
you, e.i. children’s or in our case baby monkeys minds run free. I feel that this concept could work
because of the idea’s behind it, its also amusing to look at which could work in my favor.
3. This is a musical monster, within its fur some of the elements of the festival have been captured, such
as
people dancing and gathering, musical notes are also evident within its fur. I feel that this idea is too
child like to be used to promote a festival such as glastonbury. The character that i decide to use needs
to be unusual and fresh so that people remember it and start to relate it to glastonbury.
I chose to use a baby for the character as a means of getting several messages across. I can really see
this character working if I tread carefully when selecting my illustrators. Most people attending
Glastonbury attend for the experience, most of the time a once in a life time experience but becoming a
life long memory never the less. I chose to use a baby to symbolize Michael Eavis’s dream. The first
Festival was held on the day after Jimi Hendrix died, over a two day period and before long “word had
got around”. The attendance at the time was 1,500 and the price of the festival was merely a £1
including free milk from the farm in which the festival is held. Now days over 135,000 people attended
with tickets being sold at around £200 pounds a piece. On another level the baby represents the
freedom one experiences during the festival, there its nothing freer then that of a childs mind, ticking
away with dreams and ambitions.
