10. Economic Benefits
– Initially government provided an old age
allowance of Rs.100/month to senior citizens
aged 75 years and above in 2052 (1995) as social
security in the eighth five year plan.
– In the International Year of Elderly Persons
(1999), Nepal govt. raised the old age allowance
(OAA) from Rs.100 to 150/month.

– In 2063 (2006) the amount was raised to
Rs.200/month from 150/month.
– In fiscal years 2065/2066 (2008/2009) the
government increased the amount to
Rs.500/month and reduced the age of senior
citizen from 75 to 70 years and above (except
Karnali zone and dalit citizen-60years).

12. Economic Benefits
– From fiscal Year 2015/16 Nepal govt. has
declared to allocate Rs.1000 OAA to the senior
citizens adding 500 rupees to its previous
amount.
– The fiscal year 2073/74 (2016/17) increased OAA
from Rs.1000 to Rs.2000 (Rs.1000 as medical
allowance)

– Senior citizen welfare committee and fund in
each district.
– Senior citizen identity card
– The Senior Citizens Act, 2063 (2006) stipulates
that every public vehicle reserve two seats for
people aged 60 or above and grant them 50
percent concession in fare.

services including drinking water, electricity
and telephone shall give priority to the
senior citizens while providing such
services.

– Each organization providing health services shall
provide health services by giving priority to the
senior citizens.
– The poverty affected elderly people are provided
free medicine and treatment up to NRs.2000 at a
time in all 75 districts under MWCSW.
– Fiscal year 2007/8(2064/65) allocated 25% free
beds for senior citizen.

18. Health Facilities
– From the fiscal year 2067/68 (2010/11) Govt. of
Nepal has been provided concession of at least
50% on the fees chargeable on the treatment.
– Senior citizen get free treatment up to
Rs.1,00,000 in some chronic illness: cancer, heart
disease, hemodialysis, Alzheimer's disease etc.

Mechanism
– MoWCSW, MoHP, the National Planning Commission,
and the MoF are the main agencies responsible for
taking care of the health needs of the ageing people.
– According to the directory of elderly people related
institutions in Nepal, There are about 70 organizations
registered with the govt. of Nepal. Most of them are
charity organizations.
