Overview
In this assignment, you will be writing a counterargument to the
original argument you read and
used for reference in the Argument Analysis and the Annotated
Bibliography. You disagreed
with the position argued in the article. Now you will be writing
a research essay that supports
your position. In your argument, you will be using the sources
you found in the Annotated
Bibliography. As you form your argument, you will be
countering some or all of the points in the
original argument. To support your position, you will be citing
the sources you found in for the
Annotated Bibliography. I n c l u d e t h e o r i g i n a l a r t i

20. You will be submitting this essay to two places. Please submit
the same paper to both places, but
you will not have to include the cover page when you submit it
to the discussion board.
1. Submit the paper to Turnitin.com in the “Writing Your Own
Argument” assignment.
Make sure to upload your paper as a Word document—do not
copy and paste it into
Turnitin.com.
2. Copy and paste the paper into the discussion board and
submit it there. (As stated above,
you do not have to paste the cover page onto the discussion
board. You must include it
with the paper submitted to Turnitin.) You will be doing this
because for Part 3 you will
be writing a written response to at least one classmate’s
argument.
Procedures
In your essay, you must do the following:
Write in third person. Avoid using first (I, me) and second
(you) person. For example,
instead of writing “I think that breed-specific legislation should
be abolished,” you
could write “Breed-specific legislation should be abolished.”
In the introduction, clearly state your position and the reason
you disagree. Refer
21. back to the original argument, making sure to use the author’s
name and the title of
the article. Include a link to that article in your introduction.
In each paragraph, address the points you disagree with in the
original argument.
The best way to format this would be a point/counterpoint
approach. This means
that you would refer to a point in the original article you
disagree with, and then
address that specifically and provide your opposing viewpoint.
Use concise, clear, precise language in your argument. Avoid
generalizations such as
“older people don’t know how to use technology.” If you feel
you need to state such a
generalization, find strong support (from study results) that
defends your statement
and include it in your work, with an APA-formatted citation.
Use transitions between main ideas.
Write strong paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence and
then supporting details
that are concrete and insightful. Support should include
information you found in
your research, such as statistics, examples, and statements from
experts. Make sure to
include a citation every time you use a source and to provide
22. citations for statements
that need them.
Use reasoning that is clear and logical. Every point you make
must be relevant to your
argument, and the style must be confident and professional.
