Project Area

 Our projects are in Balaka.

 The Villages are under Traditional Authority Msamala
in the eastern region of Malawi.

 It is 200 kilometers from the capital Lilongwe and 130
kilometers from the commercial city of Blantyre.

 The Villages concerned are under group village
    headmen, Kankao, Chimpakati, Mbonani, Mfulanjobvu
, Siliya, Manjanja, Khoswe, Msamala Mchenga and
    Chembekezo.
Education: Girls back to school Project

                       Girls who dropped
                       out of school because
                       of pregnancy and other
                       factors.
                       The project has select
                       ten girls from each
                       village and is paying
                       school fees for them.
                       We have encouraged
                       those who were doing
                       well in class.
Continuation

 In this area there are low numbers
                   of girls who attend secondary
                   school education due to traditional
                   beliefs, early
                   pregnancies, ignorance and
                   poverty.

 It has come to our knowledge that
out of every ten girl students in the
area seven drop out of school
either due to pregnancies or other
                   factors.

                Despite several awareness
campaign done on radios and other
                   media communication by the
                   government in many rural
                   villages, messages do not reach
them as they can not afford to buy
                   a radio.
Many girls are orphans and due to many challenges
they face, they do not go to school as a result some
end up being hopeless and eventually become
prostitutes or get married early.

The project is very important because it gives hope
to the girls living with widowed grandmothers who
cannot afford to raise school fees.

We believe these girls shall live as models after
completion of their studies. The project is useful in
many rural areas because if girls are educated then
we have educated the whole community.
City School where girls are sent
Health : HIV and Aids Project
                In some rural areas some
people are still unaware on how
                and where to get HIV/AIDS
                counseling and testing.

                There is still discrimination in
                the communities since they do
                not have the right information.

We want to have a well
                informed community so that
they are aware on how one can
                be protected from the virus.

                At the same time encourage
                and provide those living
                positively with the right
                information on the balanced
                diet.
Infrustructure Dev. Project
It has come to our knowledge
              that despite several
              awareness campaigns done
              on radios and other media
              communication on importance
              of education, good healthy
              and safe motherhood the
              efforts are being frustrated
              due to poor roads
              infrastructure in these areas.

              In many rural villages, the
              roads are impassable due to
              non availability of bridges
              hence failure to access the
              health and education facilities
Continuation

Many children begin school very late
because they can not cross rivers
during rainy seasons.

Pregnant mothers die early due to
failure to reach health facilities in time.

Therefore the need to build these
timber bridges are of paramount
importance.
Agriculture: Irrigation & Food Security
 The project is on a
                         hunger prone area.

 The area has thirty two
                         villages and has a
                         population of about
                         forty thousand people.

 It is on the rain shadow
                         and has most times
                         receives very little
                         rains.
Continuation
 The project has distributed treadle pumps to
people who are living near to the rivers.

 However this did no bear any fruits as most
rivers has water during the rainy seasons only.

 There is a need to construct dams for irrigation
    purpose.

 We need to introduce wind mills to pump water
    into the gardens
Safe drinking water

 This area is on the rain
    shadow. It does not receive
    much rains.

 Hence water table is very
    low

 People have sometimes
    gone without drinking
    water as some boreholes
    fails to pump water.

 This makes it very difficult
    for women to have enough
    water for homes choruses.
continuation
 This has affected the attendance of the
school going children in the area.

 We want the residents and animals of the
surrounding villages to have good clean
    water.

 Women and girls must not spend much
    time fetching water.
Environment Water Harvesting
              The water harvesting
                 project is very
                 important as it shall
                 improve the water
                 table on this dry land.

              The constructed dams
                 shall be used as
                 backup to the limited
                 boreholes to supply
                 water for other uses.
Continuation

 People must start fish farming business instead
of cutting few remaining trees for charcoal
    burning.

 Some people cultivate in the river banks in
search of moisture. This has prompted the
massive cutting of tree along the river banks to
    create gardens.

 The project shall also plant trees along these
rivers so that it has running water throughout
the year and at the same time prevent soil
    erosion.
Goal, Objectives & Outcome

 The intended goal is to have a well educated
    community, which protects itself from
    diseases, communicate effectively and know
    how they can empower themselves
    economically.

 The community that takes care of their
families and environment and at the same
time be able to produce food for home
    consumption.
Implementing Strategy

 The projects work hand in hand with area
development committee within the community to
    identify beneficiaries around designated project
    area.

 Before the committee starts its work, we hold
public meetings at group level and invite
traditional dancers to spice the occasion.

 We have women models who give their
experiences and encourage everyone to be
    developmental conscious.
Continuation
 Then the committee headed by the village
headman is set up, to identify names or
    groups of beneficiaries' within the
    community.

 Upon identification of names, or
    groups, Maranatha Care Foundation
    starts making arrangements with its
projects officers to set the ball rolling.
Monitoring Mechanism
 Maranatha Care Foundation continues to
    monitor the area development committee
on how they are assisting and monitoring
    beneficiaries and advise them when
necessary until the end of the project
    period.

 At the end of the project, Maranatha
submit a report to donors and the
trustees on how finances has been used.
Conclusion

 Finally the project is handed over to the
chiefs and the community to own it.
