The photographer evaluated their own photography from a recent shoot and compared it to professional photography. 1. Photography evalua/on
In comparison to professional photography, my photography is very lacklustre, perhaps because of the limited space
that I was shoo:ng. It had limited ligh:ng possibili:es and was very clu<ered. As a result, some of the images are very
blurry, under/overexposed and are shot at very uninteres:ng angles. However, the photos do s:ck to the brief and
present the instruments in a way that makes them look sleek and could be used for an adver:sement. In order to
achieve that, I worked with the ligh:ng and angles that I had to compensate.
In terms of the photography that I studied in prepara:on for this brief, my photos could have been be<er. Whilst the
guitar photography that I studied is very professional and sleek, mine is more grainy in order to reflect the gri<y nature
of ‘rock n roll’ that is appropriate for the music magazines that set the brief for me.
Although fairly different in looks, the professional photography and my own photography do bear some similari:es,
such as guitars being featured on blank canvases so as not to distract the viewer from the guitar and ligh:ng being
used to reflect of the guitars. Although, I opted to feature music related objects in my backgrounds in keeping with the
musical theme for viewers to no:ce such as posters.
There were many problems with my photoshoot plan from the start. Because I had opted to not shoot in a studio, I
knew that my shoo:ng space would have limited ligh:ng and angles. I solved these by making use of what li<le natural
light I had and trying to add as much interest to the angles I shot at as I could. I also knew that because I had a small
budget, the camera that I used would be very low quality and maybe would return many unusable photos. I solved
that problem by planning my shots carefully and taking :me over them. Unfortunately, the photos s:ll came back
slightly blurry and over exposed but were perfectly useable.

2. Many problems (men:oned briefly earlier) arose in the final photo roll, like blurryness, over/underexposure and
obscured shots. Some of these shots are pictured below. Fortunately, having taken a lot of photos, the photos that I
could use, outweighed the bad ones. I improved these shots by fiddling about with the exposure balance in photoshop
and geRng rid of the completely unuseable ones. From these shots, I have learned how to set up a shot effec:vely for
my next photography brief and that maybe next :me, I should seek a professional or at least be<er shoo:ng space.
In order to maintain control of my work, I need to use crea:ve commons. There are many crea:ve commons that I can
use which allow anyone to use my work with my permission.
Attribution
This licence lets others copy, share, remix, tweak and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as
they credit you, by providing attribution, for the original creation. This is the most accomodating of licences
and recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.
This is the most common and lenient of the Crea:ve Commons. This will allow anyone to use my work and edit or
tweak it for professional, educa:onal etc. purposes, with my permission of course.
In conclusion, I would say that I have stuck to the brief that I was set and despite a few problems, some of my photos
do look quasi professional. I have learnt how difficult it really is to shoot good photos on a very small budget and
problems can arise when shoo:ng in an unprofessional space. I will take care to organize shots be<er, take more
advantage of ligh:ng next :me and take more :me over the shoot in general next :me.
