2. The Project Wetlands Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) is a top natural and cultural resources consulting firm based in northern Virginia. When WSSI outgrew its headquarters facility, the firm began to plan a new building that would embody its passion and dedication to sustainability. Completed in 2007, the facility features green innovations inside and out. Inside, the building is designed to keep employees healthy and comfortable with 300 percent more ventilation than is required by code, motion and daylight sensors that control high-efficiency lighting and low-VOC finishes, fabrics and furniture. client Wetlands Institute Wetlands Studies and Solutions, Inc. 3. The Challenges Bartzen + Ball, PLC undertook to design an office interior that would achieve LEED-CI (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Commercial Interiors) Gold certification and wanted to work with an environmentally conscious furniture manufacturer with a product line that would contribute to reaching that goal. Ultimately, Bartzen + Ball came to Teknion, working with the national manager of sustainable programs and a LEED Accredited Professional whose advanced level of understanding and technical knowledge guided selection of products, materials and finishes that would meet stringent LEED guidelines. products featured Leverage Panel System Expansion Desking Desking System Ledger Storage Spiral & Speckle Panel Fabric designer/dealer Bartzen & Ball client Wetlands Institute Wetlands Studies and Solutions, Inc. 4. The Teknion Response Drawing upon her experience and expertise with LEED, she worked with the WSSI team to select the best product for its needs. Backus states, “We were so pleased to work with Meg Thomas and her team at Bartzen + Ball and WSSI to make the client’s dream a reality. This project was extremely important to the client, the design firm and to Teknion. We are proud to have been a part of this extraordinary installation.” The WSSI facility is furnished with 80 Leverage workstations, 50 Expansion Desking workstations, Expansion Tables and Ledger filing and storage. Lowheight Expansion components designed for LEED compliance proved to be ideal for the WSSI environment. Spiral and Speckle corn-derived panel fabrics were also chosen as an environmentally friendly product made from a renewable resource. Leverage and Expansion worksurfaces feature wheatboard substrate, that serves as an environmentally preferred substitute for wood-based products containing toxic resins such as plywood or particleboard. Teknion’s senior vice president of design, marketing and sustainable development, worked closely with others on the project to align planning and design with the guidelines set by LEED. “Wheatboard contributed to a total of 20 percent recycled content overall for the interior materials. Without it, WSSI would have received only one point for MR 4.1, requiring a 10 percent total.” Unquestionably, the exceptional WSSI facility (which was honored by the Leadership in Low Impact Development Recognition Program) was the result of great teamwork and a true commitment to creating sustainable, green-built environments.
