3. First, the students learned
all sorts of interesting facts
about dust. They wrote
sentences about what
surprised them the most.
Then, using markers on
coffee filter paper, they
drew the colors of sunsets
Using pipettes and spray
bottles, they diluted the
water colors that had been
absorbed onto the paper
and observed what
changes occurred.
4. They saw that as the water spread, the ink colors streaked in
interesting ways. This is “color writing” or chromatography at work.
Their finished sunset pictures were paired with their sentences on
dust and put together as a display.
