The third grade students learned surprising facts about dust from a book by April Pulley Sayre, including that more dust in the atmosphere leads to more colorful sunrises and sunsets. The students wrote sentences about what surprised them most about dust and then drew sunset colors on coffee filters using markers. They observed how the ink colors streaked as water was added using pipettes and spray bottles, demonstrating the principles of chromatography. Their sunset pictures and dust sentences were displayed together.
