ROJoson PEP Talk
I have a Patient
Empowerment
Program in which I
like to empower the
lay people or
patients to take
control in the
management of
their health.
3. There are 3 courses
in the PEP Talk.
I completed the Core
Course on October 9,
2021.
4. From October 23,
2021 onwards, I have
been tackling Health
Disorder and Health
Issue Courses. This
may take 3 years or
longer.

Health Issue
Doing self-

loving your
body!
My PEP TALK today
is entitled: Doing
self-examination of
your body is loving
your body.
This is part of the
Health Issue Course.
6. We are all borne with a body.
We all want to be physically and mentally
healthy as long as possible while we are
still in this world.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
7. We don’t like diseases to strike our body.
We all wish that diseases will not strike
our body but unfortunately, it is
something that is beyond our control
most of the time.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
8. We don’t know when and what disease
will strike our body.
At best, we all hope that when disease
strikes our body, it will be something that
is curable and one that is not
permanently crippling if not curable.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
9. At best, we all hope that when disease
strikes our body, it will be recognized by
us early enough so that there is a good
chance for cure.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
10. The most practical way to recognize
disease early enough when it
unfortunately strikes our body is through
a self-examination of our very own body
and its parts.
This should be complemented by
constantly and vigilantly listening and
watching our body and its parts for any
symptoms of a disease.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
11. At present, most people rely on
instrumental or laboratory diagnostic
procedures to screen for diseases because
of peddling by hospitals and clinics.
Self-examination of body and its parts are
not emphasized.
Most people do not and have not
developed self-examination of the body
as a health habit.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
12. My personal advice is to concentrate
first on self-examination of one’s
body and its parts before
considering physician’s medical
consultation and instrumental or
laboratory screening tests and
procedures.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
13. Self-examinations of the body and its
parts even in the absence of symptoms
include self-examination of the:
• skin
• eyes
• oral or mouth
• neck and thyroid
• breasts
• genitalia
• extremities; etc.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
14. The self-examination of whole body and
its parts complemented by listening and
watching one’s body and its parts is the
most useful and practical screening
examination as it is simple and can be
done anytime, anywhere and repeatedly
or periodically and carries no cost.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
15. One does not know which part of the
body will be stricken with a disease. With
the current practice of relying on the so-
called executive check-up packages, with
omission or neglect of regular self-
examination of the body and its parts,
one may be barking at the wrong tree,
meaning trying to screen for a disease
that may not happen.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
16. Barking at the wrong tree!
Examples:
One may be focusing on mammography
for breast cancer and yet the disease that
may strike is a brain cancer.
One may be focusing on diabetes mellitus
and yet the disease that may strike is a
goiter.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
17. One has to remember always that there is
no such thing as a complete executive
check-up package that will detect all
possible diseases in the body.
In the end, one still has to rely self-
examination of whole body and its parts
complemented by listening and watching
one’s body and its parts for early
detection of any disease that may arise.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
18. So, start with a periodic self-examination of body
parts using FEEL, LOOK, and PALPATE procedures.
This is most practical way of doing things rather
than doing instrumental or laboratory
procedures to look for diseases.
The latter cannot cover all parts of the body and
if performed, it cannot be done on a monthly
basis which can be done with self-examination.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
19. The self-examination can detect changes and
diseases on a timely basis in case the previous
self-examinations were inadequate or
erroneously negative.
With instrumental or laboratory procedures,
changes and unnoticed diseases will only be
detected on the next examinations which are
usually done after six months, one year, 2 years,
and so many years after. This is equated to late
detection if relying solely on instrumental or
laboratory procedures.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
20. Do self-examination of your body and its
parts now – regularly, as regular as once a
month using the right techniques coupled
with proper interpretation of findings to
be taught by your trusted family
physicians.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
21. You can do self-examination of your body
everyday, if you want, in a cursory manner while
taking a bath. Just scrub or rub your body parts
firmly with your hands – your neck, your breasts,
your tummy; your scalp; your upper and lower
extremities; genitalia; and of course, your skin,
etc. You may be able to detect anything unusual,
particularly an abnormal lump while doing this.
This way, you will detect a disease that may
occur in your body early.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
22. If you love yourself and your body
enough, you will do regular self-
examination of whole body and its parts
to aim for early detection of a disease
that may strike, for a better chance for
cure, and for a better chance for a long
life.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
23. Remember, if you got a disease, strictly
speaking, you suffer alone.
Your doctors and significant others can
only help you so much. Other people
won't be able to feel your physical pain.
You alone!
Only you!
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of
your body is
loving your body!
24. If you don’t do regular self-examination
of your body and a disease is discovered
late because of your complacency and
self-neglect,
you can’t blame anybody else but
yourself.
And it means:
You have not love yourself and your body
enough!
Health Issue

25. Remember doing self-
examination of your body
regularly is loving yourself

Whole body self-
examination means
FEEL, LOOK and
PALPATE the entire
body from head to
toes.
30. How to do self-examination of the body
and its parts
ROJoson’s Recommendations:
• Do unhurried meticulous self-
examination of the whole body
regularly once a month. Choose and
mark a specific date or day each
month for ease of memory.
Health Issue
Doing self-
examination of

Choose a date or day
each month that will
coincide with the
date or day
recommended for
the ideal time to
examine a certain
part of the body,
such as the breasts
(e.g. 7 days after
mense or lst or last
day of the month).
31. How to do self-examination of the body
and its parts
ROJoson’s Recommendations:
• In between the monthly date of self-
examination, do the cursory
examination while taking a bath
everyday. Use a bath technique that
will promote palpation of any unusual
lump in the body.
Health Issue

rub your body parts
firmly with your
hands – your neck,
your breasts, your
tummy; your scalp;
your upper and
lower extremities;
genitalia; and of
course, your skin,
etc.
32. How to do self-examination of the body
and its parts
FEEL, OBSERVE and PALPATE THE ENTIRE BODY
AND ITS PARTS (from head to toes)
FEEL – feel for any unusual sensation such as
discomfort / pain
OBSERVE – look for any unusual contour and skin
changes including discoloration and lesions
PALPATE – touch, grope and press firmly to look
for anything unusual, particularly a lump or mass
