20. Prevention of HEART SYNDROME / ATTACK
What causes holiday heart syndrome?
Doctors coined the term after noticing an
increase in instances of this condition related to
or caused by heavy holiday drinking. So, alcohol
can trigger episodes of AFib or an irregular
heartbeat. Itās important to note that holiday
heart syndrome is one specific condition linked to
heavy drinking, however, there are other factors
that can cause heart-related health concerns.

What else might the increase in cardiac events during the
winter holiday season?
ā¢ Emotional Stress: Unfortunately, the holiday season can
be a source of stress due to family gatherings and/or
financial pressures (with gifts and travel expenses).
ā¢ Overindulgence: Poor eating habits and high salt intake
can exacerbate chronic heart conditions, such as heart
failure and chronic high blood pressure.
ā¢ Delayed treatment: Delays in seeking treatment during
the holidays may also play a part in the prevalence of
cardiac events.

25. Prevention of firecracker injuries in the
Philippines
Firecracker
and Burn
Injuries
In the Philippines, December has been declared
as Firecracker Injury Prevention Month since time
immemorial.
Every December, there is an anti-
firecracker campaign to reduce injuries
caused by the use of firecrackers and
other pyrotechnic devices during the
holiday celebration.

ROJoson Advocacy Against Unnecessary
Firecracker Injuries
As a surgical resident in the Philippine
General Hospital from 1976 to 1981, I
had this gruesome experience of seeing
and treating patients with firecracker
injuries every year-end. I always ask
myself out of frustration: when will they
ever learn?

ROJoson Advocacy Against Unnecessary
Firecracker Injuries
In 2004, when I was the chairperson of
the Department of Surgery in Ospital ng
Maynila Medical Center, I launched a
campaign to prevent unnecessary
firecracker injuries in the City of Manila.

I wrote a letter (dated October 22, 2004)
to then Mayor Joselito Atienza,
requesting for help to have an ordinance
promulgated by the City of Manila
Council banning the use of firecrackers
by the public in the territory of the City
of Manila during every new year
celebration starting 2004.

I thought such kind of an ordinance was
the most effective way of reducing, if not
totally eliminating, the incidence of
firecracker-related injuries in the City of
Manila.
At this time, Davao City has an ordinance ban on
firecrackers and this was effective.
Unfortunately, there was no response from the
Manila City Hall.

Firecracker Injuries
December 2010 to first week of January 2011, I
decided to put up a website, entitled: āUnwanted
Firecracker Injuriesā
(https://sites.google.com/site/unwantedfirecrac
kersinjuries) to maintain my advocacy against
unnecessary firecrackers injuries.
The only thing I can do is to keep on reminding
people on the risk of firecracker injuries and
appeal to them to avoid.
31. Prevention of firecracker injuries in the
Philippines
Firecracker

Injuries
Fortunately, as years go by, more cities have
passed ordinances on firecracker ban ā examples,
aside from Davao, Zamboanga, Baguio and
Muntinlupa as of 2013 (my last tracking).
Again, fortunately, in 2017, President Rodrigo
Duterte issued Executive Order No. 28 providing
for the regulation and control for the use of
firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.
32. Prevention of firecracker injuries in the
Philippines
Firecracker

Injuries
EO 28 limits use of firecrackers to
community displays.
āTo minimize the risk of injuries and casualties,
the use of firecrackers shall henceforth be
confined to community fireworks displays.ā
The EO has reduced significantly the number of
firecracker injuries in the Philippines. But there
are still casualties, NOT yet achieving ZERO
incidence.

Firecrackers and fireworks, no doubt, will be
present in our midst because of tradition.
They will never be completely eliminated as they
will continue to be used for celebrating
milestones and occasions.

ROJoson Advocacy Against Unnecessary
Firecracker Injuries
To avoid unnecessary firecracker injuries, my
recommendation is that firecrackers be sold to
and used only by people trained and authorized
to do the fireworks during special occasions and
in safe places.
The rest of the citizenry should just watch and
enjoy the fireworks at a safe place and be
protected from firecracker injuries.
37. First-aid management of firecracker injuries
Firecracker
and Burn
Injuries
ā¢ Wash copiously with soap and water right
away. (applicable to all parts of body injured)
ā¢ Control profuse bleeding if present by
applying pressure either by a clean hand or
bandages.
ā¢ If firecracker injuries are severe, seek
consultation with physicians right away.
ā¢ Take pain medications as needed such as
paracetamol or NSAIDs (sample: mefenamic
acid).
ā¢ Antibiotics may be prescribed by physicians as
indicated.
