  2. 2. Healthy Living/Healthy Aging <ul><li>Do you believe healthy living is necessary for you to look and feel your very best? </li></ul><ul><li>Are you confused about how to be healthy? </li></ul>
  3. 3. Healthy Living/Healthy Aging Why shouldn't we be? We're constantly being bombarded with advertising, commercials & medical advice that can make us forget simple healthy living commonsense guidelines...

How can healthy living impact healthy aging? <ul><li>Many factors affect your health.. some you can't control, (ex. genetic makeup or your age). </li></ul><ul><li>By taking steps toward healthy living, you can help reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke & other serious diseases. </li></ul><ul><li>Healthy lifestyles can prevent, minimize and even reverse frailty & already poor health in older aged adults </li></ul><ul><li>Healthy lifestyles result in savings to the health care system.. </li></ul><ul><li>Healthy lifestyles = better quality of life for seniors </li></ul>
  5. 5. Healthy Living/Healthy Aging <ul><li>So what are key tips to healthy living? </li></ul><ul><li>Eat healthy </li></ul><ul><li>Drink plenty of water </li></ul><ul><li>Exercise regularly </li></ul><ul><li>Minimize toxins </li></ul><ul><li>Reduce stress </li></ul>

Eating Healthy <ul><li>Eat a variety of healthy foods, and limit calories & saturated fat </li></ul><ul><li>Healthy eating is one of the best things you can do to prevent health problems, such as: heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type2 diabetes, osteoporosis & some types of cancer </li></ul><ul><li>Healthier eating also includes learning about balance, variety, and moderation </li></ul><ul><li>Eat from each food group -grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, and meat and other proteins, including beans </li></ul>
  7. 7. Drink Plenty of Water <ul><li>Water has one of the most important roles to play in maintaining a healthy body. </li></ul><ul><li>Human body contains 2/3rd water by weight. Blood, muscles, brain and bone are composed of 83%, 75%, 74% and 22% of water respectively. </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of water can lead to dehydration. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired . </li></ul><ul><li>A healthy person should drink 6-8 8oz glasses of water a day. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Exercise Regularly <ul><li>Exercise improves your mood. Physical activity can make you feel happier & look younger </li></ul><ul><li>Exercise combats chronic diseases. Regular physical activity can help you prevent/manage high blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and prevent type 2 diabetes </li></ul><ul><li>Exercise boosts your energy level. Physical activity delivers oxygen & nutrients to your tissues & helps your entire cardiovascular system. </li></ul><ul><li>Exercise promotes better sleep. A good night's sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Minimize Toxins <ul><li>Your body’s pH can affect your body in a variety of ways. Having an acidic body can lead to many health problems such as: </li></ul><ul><li>various types of cancer, auto immune disorders, kidney and gallstones, hormonal imbalances, damage to your arteries and heart, neurological diseases, osetoporosis/osteoarthritis, premature aging </li></ul><ul><li>Follow an alkaline diet, to include more alkaline foods & limiting the acidic foods you eat. </li></ul><ul><li>This will improve your health and slow down the aging process </li></ul>

Reduce Stress <ul><li>If you have any sort of stress in your life – today’s the day to show it the door. </li></ul><ul><li>Individuals who are chronically stressed have a much higher incident hypertension and obesity </li></ul><ul><li>Stress robs a lot from a person, and at the top of the list is happiness </li></ul><ul><li>Stress interferes with our immune system and is often blamed in the medical community for everything from colds to cancer </li></ul><ul><li>Reducing stress = Longer life & better relationships . </li></ul>

Healthy Living/Healthy Aging <ul><li>Healthy aging is a lifelong process </li></ul><ul><li>It's never too late to start </li></ul><ul><li>Kick bad habits and adopt new healthier ones </li></ul><ul><li>Make small changes instead of a lot of change at one time. </li></ul><ul><li>Research shows that healthy lifestyles are more influential than genetic factors in avoiding deterioration associated with aging. </li></ul><ul><li>Stay connected.. Staying socially connected contributes to ones mental and physical well being </li></ul>

An example of Healthy Living.. <ul><li>These are my grandparents, Miriam (92) and Charles (93) Connelly </li></ul><ul><li>On Sept 28, 2010 they celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary </li></ul><ul><li>They have always concentrated on family, Church, eating healthy, exercising, & drinking milk. </li></ul><ul><li>They both love crossword puzzles that keep their mind sharp. </li></ul><ul><li>They have set such an example for all of us in my family. </li></ul>
