12. What is a MOUTH HEALTH? ORAL HEALTH?
DENTAL HEALTH?
We will use mouth and oral to mean the same
thing. We will use them interchangeably.
Dental means the teeth.
Teeth are components of the mouth (or within
the mouth). There are other components in the
mouth beside the teeth (tongue, salivary glands,
etc.)
Though mouth health includes the teeth, we will
have a separate discussion on teeth health.

the mouth or oral
cavity.
Dental Health –
means no wellness

problems with the

14. Why is MOUTH AND DENTAL HEALTH important
to know?
Our mouth and dental health is / are more
important than we might realize. Don’t belittle it.
They are the window to the overall health of a
human being.
Problems in mouth and teeth can affect the rest
of the human body.
Problems can cause ill-sense of wellness
(physical) and ill-sense of well-being
(biopsychosocial)

Eating is one of the
most frequent
human behaviors
that brings
enjoyment in life.
A lot of people finds
enjoyment in eating.
Unhealthy mouth
and dental health
can prevent
enjoyment in eating
and therefore, in life.

15. What are the parameters for HEALTHY MOUTH
AND TEETH?
Healthy mouth = healthy oral cavity and healthy
teeth
A healthy mouth has no evidence of injuries,
lumps, ulcers, plagues or unusual color on or
under the tongue, cheeks, or gums and untreated
tooth decay.
Teeth should not be wiggly but firmly attached to
the gingiva and bone. It should not hurt to chew
and during brushing the teeth.

membrane).

The use of alcohol and tobacco can cause many
mouth problems, particularly the tumors.
Chances of having oral cancer are higher with
smoking, using smokeless (chew) tobacco, or
drinking too much alcohol.

• Be vigilant against injuries
• Oral hygiene
• Proper and adequate diet
• NO tobacco
• Avoid alcohol
• Do mouth self-
examination at least
monthly.
• Consult early if with
unusual findings.

NO tooth decay or dental caries.
NO untreated tooth decay or dental caries.
Teeth should not be wiggly but firmly attached to
the gingiva and bone.
Teeth and gums should not hurt during chewing
and brushing.

Practice good oral hygiene daily.

possible, right after eating.

• Use fluoride toothpaste.
• Floss daily combined with toothbrushing.
• Eat sticky sugary foods in moderation.
• Avoid tobacco use.
Have regular dental checkups and cleanings. Contact your dentist as soon
as a dental problem arises.
