• Mouth and teeth are important parts of the body
and are essential for the health of a person. Oral
Health is important for many reasons: strong and
sound teeth are the most needed tool for chewing
foods and for speaking; for aesthetic, how a person
look, for a beautiful smile, and a healthy set of
teeth gives a person a self-esteem and confidence.
• The consequences of having not good oral health
can be severe. It can cause terrible kind of pain that
can disrupt school, work and other daily activities. It
can lead to infections that can spread to other parts
of the body and in very severe case, it can be life
threatening, thus, oral health is very important.

• Oral health cannot be separated to general health. A healthy lifestyle
based on good nutrition, personal hygiene, safe water and sanitation
and daily exercise lead to health including oral health.
4. Tooth decay or dental caries
A common disease among Filipinos is
tooth decay, where in 87% are affected
(NMEDS 2011).

6. Causes of tooth decay
• Too much intake of sugar (in-between snacks)
• Too much plaque (bacteria in the sticky layer of the
tooth surface)

1. A cavity is a hole on the surface of the tooth. It is
caused by eating too much sugary foods and not
brushing the teeth.
2. When a cavity gets infected, it can lead to tooth
decay that causes toothache, swelling, and bad
breath.
3. Tooth brushing helps prevent the formation of
cavities.
4. Tooth brushing with fluoride tooth paste at least 2
times a day (in the morning and just before bed)
helps clean the teeth thoroughly.
