Subject: Oriental Fruit Fly Eradication Program
The California Department of Food and Agriculture has discovered an infestation of an exotic insect pest, the
Oriental Fruit Fly, in Saratoga. The California Secretary of Agriculture has issued an emergency proclamation
authorizing the implementation of an eradication project. You may want to advise your staff of the Project’s
increased trapping and treatment activities as they may result in inquiring calls to your office from city
residents.
The treatment area is projected to encompass 12 square miles. (See attached map). The treatment will likely
take 3 to 5 days beginning on Monday, October 19, 2015. These treatments will be repeated every two weeks
for approximately 8 weeks.
The eradication will be performed by State personnel and will be conducted by modified pick-up trucks with a
State seal on each door and a placard on the back tailgate of the vehicle that states: “Fruit Fly Eradication”,
“Slow Moving Vehicle” or “Frequent Stops”. The trucks will also have a flashing beacon. The description
and license plate numbers of the vehicles that might be used are as follows:
License # Make & Model Color
1145591 Dodge Ram White
1117855 Dodge Ram White
1039255 Dodge Ram White
1039449 Dodge Ram White
As in the past, the eradication treatment for Oriental Fruit Fly will use the “male attractant” technique using
ground-based, spot applications of insecticide and pheromone lure. This gelatinous mixture is applied as
small, dollar-sized spots (“bait stations”) on street trees and utility poles. The male fruit flies are attracted to
these spots because of the lure, and die from feeding on the minute amount of pesticide in the mixture. The
treatments are applied at heights that are typically inaccessible and cause minimal disruption to the public.
Oriental Fruit Fly is an exotic insect pest found throughout much of southern Asia. Distribution in the United
States is restricted to the Hawaiian Islands. It is a pest of over 230 kinds of fruit and vegetables including
citrus, stone fruits, pome fruits, avocado and tomato. Infestations of Oriental Fruit Fly likely result from the
introduction of contraband fruit.
Please feel free to contact my staff or me should you have any questions concerning this matter.
